"It's simple," I said, looking him straight in the eye.
"I want to know the truth. Otherwise, I believe not only the tax department but even the Transportation Department will be very interested."
"You!" Zhang Ming was about to explode when his phone suddenly rang.
He answered the call, his expression changing several times before he finally said coldly, "Mr. Ji wants to see you."
Mr. Ji Dongsheng's office was located in the tallest office building in the west of the city.
Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, one could overlook the entire city.
"Xiao Wei, right?" Ji Dongsheng was a man in his fifties, looking refined and approachable.
"Please sit. If it weren't for this matter, I wouldn't have known that the Vehicle Registration Office could make such a mistake."
I remained silent, simply watching him calmly.
"You have guts, young man. I admire that." Ji Dongsheng poured me a cup of tea.
"But sometimes, knowing too much may not be a good thing."
"Is Mr. Ji warning me?"
"No, I'm reminding you," Ji Dongsheng said as he set down his teacup.
"Do you think a mere Deputy Director of the Vehicle Administration can mobilize such vast resources?"
I was taken aback.
What was he hinting at?
"To be honest with you," Ji Dongsheng leaned back in his chair.
"After the license plate restriction policy was implemented, there are tens of thousands of quotas allocated each year. Do you think these quotas are distributed through normal channels?"
"Through proper means," I replied.
"Naive," Ji Dongsheng chuckled.
"In this city, every industry chain requires vehicles, but what if they can't obtain quotas? We're simply facilitating a more rational flow of resources."
Just then, his secretary rushed in, pushing the door open. " manager Ji, it's bad! There's been an incident at the inspection station!"
"What happened?"
"The Joint Inspection Team is conducting a surprise check and wants to thoroughly investigate all operational vehicle inspection records!"
Ji Dongsheng's expression changed instantly.
He stared at me, "Are you the one behind this?"
"I don't know what Mr. Ji is talking about," I stood up.
"However, I suggest that the A·7X5D2 car should not go to the inspection station. After all, I'm the owner."
"You!" Ji Dongsheng slammed his hand on the table, "Do you know who you're going against?"
"I only know that this car must be deregistered by tomorrow," I turned to walk out.
"Otherwise, I might just have to check out the inspection station myself."
"Stop!" Ji Dongsheng suddenly shouted.
"You think just a tax audit on your dealership is enough? That Porsche of yours was sold at an exorbitant price too, wasn't it?"
I turned back and gave a meaningful smile, "Mr. Ji, are you sure no one is recording when you say that?"
As I walked out of the office building, I immediately dialed Xiao Lin's number, "I've sent you the recording, please keep it safe."
"Lao Wei, you're being too reckless!" Xiao Lin's voice was filled with concern, "If they really investigate the dealership..."
"I won't." I was confident.
"They're in no position to protect themselves. By the way, how's the contact with Lao Zheng going?"
"The statement has been taken. He also provided a list of employees, and there are quite a few insiders on it."
Just then, Xiao Li's call came in: "Master, I've found something! The maintenance records for A·7X5D2 for the past six months are all at Yongxing Repair Factory, and..."
"And what?"
"This Repair Shop specializes in modifying taxis. They have their own system that can bypass the annual inspection. But recently, it seems they've offended someone and got reported."
I felt a stir in my heart. "When did this happen?"
"This morning. It seems there was an anonymous tip-off saying they were illegally modifying operational vehicles. The traffic police and the Quality Inspection Department conducted a joint surprise inspection and uncovered quite a few issues."
I chuckled. "Looks like someone is moving faster than us."
After hanging up, I drove straight to Yongxing Repair Factory.
Sure enough, the factory gate was tightly locked, with a notice of closure posted at the entrance.
Just as I was about to leave, I suddenly spotted a familiar figure sneaking out from the side door.
I focused my gaze and saw it was Xiao Zhou from last time.
I followed him from a distance as he hopped into a van.
The vehicle didn’t go far before stopping in front of an internet café.
Xiao Zhou looked around quickly before striding inside.
"Interesting," I sent a message to Xiao Li, "Help me check the surveillance footage of this internet café."
After waiting for half an hour, Xiao Zhou emerged, holding a USB drive.
At that moment, my phone buzzed; it was Xiao Li: "Master, this internet café is owned by Jincheng Company. They have a server here."
"Notify Lao Zheng and tell him someone is destroying evidence."
Ten minutes later, two police cars screeched to a halt.
Just as Xiao Zhou got into the car, he was stopped by the police.
" Master Zhou, sorry to keep you waiting," I stepped forward. "Can I take a look at the data on that USB drive?"
