The old man once again handed over two jars of water, saying, "Thank you, brave warrior."
However, Dian Wei waved his hand and declined, stating, "I have already given this to you. This water is inexpensive; you can keep it. There is plenty more on the cart."
Seeing Dian Wei's insistence, the old man nodded slightly and accepted the water jars, silently remembering this kindness in his heart.
"May I ask the names of these two noble gentlemen?"
Dian Wei and Chu Yan replied in turn: "I am Dian Wei from Chen Liu." "I am Chu Yan from Changshan in Ji Province."
After their introductions, the two asked, "What do we call you, old sir?"
The elder responded modestly, "I am Gao. The people behind me are my descendants."
This statement caused Chu Yan to furrow his brows in thought; he could not recall any prominent families with the surname Gao in Ji Province.
However, Dian Wei suddenly spoke up, "Gao? I remember there is a distinguished family with that name in Chen Liu. Could it be...?"
Gao sighed softly and gazed towards the southeast. "What you mentioned is indeed the Gao family of Chen Liu, but we are merely a branch of them."
"Is that so?" Dian Wei was taken aback for a moment before curiously asking, "Since you are a side branch of the Gao family from Chen Liu, why not seek refuge directly in your hometown but instead travel to Gyeonggi for help? After all, even amidst drought and disaster, Chen Liu remains strong and could support you."
Upon hearing this, the old man's breath became heavier, yet his gaze was unwaveringly resolute. "Many years ago, we left the Gao family of Chen Liu due to differing beliefs. Even if the road ahead is bleak and life feels worse than death, I would rather not humble myself like a dog begging for pity."
His tone was firm and resolute, revealing the complexity of the circumstances behind his words.
Dian Wei and Chu Yan sensed that there might be hidden secrets, but seeing the old man unwilling to speak, they, as outsiders, felt it inappropriate to probe further.
In the silent atmosphere, Dian Wei's gaze fell upon the young boy beside the old man.
"Young man, what is your name?"
The brave young boy stepped forward confidently.
"My name is Gao Shun."
"Gao Shun, that's wonderful," Dian Wei replied. "You show great respect for your elders; I will remember you."
As the sun slowly descended, it cast a gentle hue over this extraordinary conversation. The heat of the day gradually faded away.
With the moon rising once again in the east, the entire land became bright and clean. Chu Yan stepped down from the carriage, taking out a few bundles of dry grass and carefully selected feed to nourish the horses.
The two horses buried their heads deep into the pile of grass, savoring it with such delight that even the observing Gao Family couldn't help but feel a pang of hunger.
Despite the ongoing drought during the day, the air at night was much cooler, with a slight chill seeping from the ground into their skin, providing comfort.
Dian Wei and Chu Yan whispered to each other by the side of the carriage while the Gao Family huddled together for warmth. Their silence was not intentional; perhaps they were simply too exhausted to speak.
Words require energy too; conserving strength would allow them to continue their journey later.
"Brother Dian Wei, how about we take turns keeping watch tonight?" Chu Yan suggested. "I'll take the first half; you can rest for now, and then you can take over later."
Dian Wei gently shook his head. "No way! You have been driving all day and must be tired, while I have rested in the carriage all day."
"Besides," he added firmly, "we cannot split our watch at night. There is no way you will keep watch tonight."
"You'll have to drive for a while longer, and I can continue to rest for now. So, it's decided: I'll keep watch tonight, and you can sleep soundly."
Chu Yan sighed softly, filled with gratitude towards Dian Wei. He recalled the bumpy road ahead, where the vehicle's jolting could almost lift a person off their seat. Rest? That seemed like a fantasy!
Getting out of the car without feeling nauseous was a testament to his strong constitution. However, seeing Dian Wei's determined expression, Chu Yan understood that his concern was genuine. Acknowledging his own fatigue, he finally nodded.
"Alright then, I appreciate it, big brother. Please keep watch tonight."
Dian Wei waved his hand in response.
