If it weren't for John's higher cultivation level, he might have been lying there like those corpses on the ground, frozen and lifeless.
The blizzard outside showed no signs of letting up, continuing to ravage the land with wild fury. Over the past few days, John had led his team through the relentless snowfall, struggling every step of the way.
All around them lay the frozen bodies of soldiers, sprawled haphazardly across the ground. Hunger and cold had driven these men to madness; they fought over every piece of clothing on the dead, desperate for warmth. Any food that appeared even remotely edible was pounced upon without hesitation.
The scene was chaotic and heart-wrenching. John dared not intervene; in the face of death, titles and ranks meant nothing. Some soldiers, driven to desperation by hunger, had begun to gnaw on the corpses of fallen enemies, their eyes gleaming with a feral hunger that would make one think they were ghouls if not for their tattered uniforms.
"My lord, would you like to try some freshly roasted meat?" Kuiradi offered a steaming piece of meat that sizzled in his hand.
John's gaze fixated on the meat Kuiradi held out, and he understood all too well what it was. In such bitter cold, after so many days of hardship, where could they possibly find normal food? If he wasn't mistaken, this piece of roasted meat was likely from those unfortunate souls around them.
Rationality screamed in his mind that he must not eat this meat, yet at that moment, his stomach roared like a wildfire, waves of intense hunger crashing over him as if shouting: "Eat it! Otherwise, you'll starve here!"
Despite being an Epic Knight with a physique stronger than most, his body demanded nourishment even more urgently, leading him to feel hunger more acutely.
After much hesitation, John ultimately succumbed to the primal urge for survival and tremblingly reached out to take the piece of roasted meat.
As he carefully took his first bite, an indescribable taste flooded his mouth, causing him to gag involuntarily. However, moments later, overwhelming hunger triumphed over his inner revulsion and disgust; he began to devour it greedily, each bite taken with ravenous intensity.
Kuiradi stood by silently watching his lord's desperate state and discreetly stepped back a few paces. He turned and pulled out a piece of jerky that he had prepared earlier.
Nonchalantly placing the jerky in his mouth, he chewed slowly and methodically. His calm demeanor suggested that he was not as desperate as John; perhaps he had already eaten something earlier to stave off hunger.
From that day on, the scent of cooked meat occasionally wafted through the ranks of their team, sometimes accompanied by the aroma of broth. This attracted monsters to attack them; however, no monster corpses were found along the path they traveled.
