At this moment, hunger and cold were the most accurate portrayal of John and his companions.
Yesterday, a sudden and inexplicable sandstorm swept in like a demon, ruthlessly taking away their precious supplies. Countless vibrant lives vanished amidst the vast dunes, leaving behind a heart-wrenching scene.
Today, a chilling gust of wind surged forth from an unknown source, sweeping across the land like raging waves. As far as the eye could see, everything appeared to be encased in ice crystals. The grass along the roadsides was buried beneath thick layers of snow, leaving no trace behind.
Already lacking food sources, the group now found themselves in an even more desperate situation. With no other choice, they gritted their teeth and chewed on frozen weeds that resembled ice pops to stave off hunger.
However, if there was a silver lining to be found, it was that Kuiradi had finally returned to the group. This old fellow had miraculously survived, which was indeed a stroke of luck amidst their misfortunes.
Looking at the now unrecognizable secret realm before him, John pondered silently: most people would likely find it difficult to escape their grim fate. Even someone as strong as himself might not be able to avoid disaster.
At this moment, what weighed most heavily on his mind was his family back home in the territory. He thought of his many children, especially his one hundred sons. If he were to meet with misfortune and fail to return home, they would undoubtedly fight fiercely over his inheritance, even going so far as to bash each other's heads in.
He knew that if he remained safe for another twenty or thirty years, these children would surely grow into his strongest assets. With so many Transcendent Knight s at his disposal, which family would dare to compare? His own could be said to be thriving with talent.
Yet right now, if he truly did not return, whether he could even preserve this hard-earned territory remained uncertain!
Kuiradi held out a pot of freshly cooked vegetable soup and urged John to take a sip. "Come on, you should drink some first. Although it won't fill your belly, at least it will warm you up."
John tilted his head back and gulped down half of it in one go. A wave of warmth instantly flowed from his throat into his stomach and quickly spread throughout his body, as if a small flame had ignited within him, bringing some comfort.
He set down the pot and let out a long sigh of relief, wiping the remnants from the corner of his mouth with his sleeve. Then he handed the remaining half pot to Kuiradi and said, "You should drink some too; it will help warm you up. Ugh, these damned days... I really don’t know when we’ll see the light at the end of this tunnel!"
Kuiradi took the pot and gazed blankly into the distance, murmuring to himself, "Yes, these days are too hard to bear; I can hardly remember how long it's been." He extended his hand and began counting days on his fingers.
It had already been a full month, but there were still two months left! Who knew what else they would face in that time? Yesterday brought a sky-darkening sandstorm; today brought this deadly cold front. He couldn’t help but wonder if tomorrow would bring a meteor shower from the heavens—if that were to happen, they might truly have no chance of survival. John furrowed his brow and sighed deeply with worry.
They turned their heads to look back at the military camp not far behind them. Though called a camp, it was little more than a makeshift shelter. The soldiers were huddled closely together at this moment, trying to share warmth through their proximity. A few remaining pieces of wood that could still be lit were gathered in the center to form a small fire pit. The flickering flames cast shadows on weary faces filled with fear.
