By the Stream
With nothing to occupy his time, John found a rare moment of leisure, fishing by the stream with his homemade rod.
Finally, he felt a tug on the line after squatting for what seemed like ages. Gripping the rod tightly, he prepared to haul in the fish, relying solely on brute strength rather than technique.
Crack!
"Damn it!" he exclaimed as the rod snapped. Quickly grabbing the broken half, he pulled with all his might. With a swift motion, a one-meter-long fish leaped out of the water.
Thud! It landed on the ground with a heavy thump, and before it could wriggle away with its strength, it was knocked out cold.
The maid hurried over to help John collect the large fish, her excitement palpable. "You're amazing, sir! Look at this fish; it's almost as heavy as I am!"
Discarding the broken rod, he reached out to her clothing with a chuckle. "Ha! How could you possibly weigh more than this? You're still the bigger one!"
He couldn't help but feel grateful for this otherworldly experience; not only were there such large fish in the stream, but even the maid was impressive in her own right.
The sound of hooves approached from a distance, growing louder and clearer. John quickly placed his hand on the hilt of his sword at his waist, his gaze sharp and alert.
A knight clad in plate armor reined in his steed, which snorted loudly and kicked up dust as it came to a halt before John.
John observed the intricate designs on the shining armor—the emblem of the White Family emblazoned upon it.
"What is your connection to the White Family?" he asked, frowning in confusion.
The knight did not respond immediately; instead, he slowly lifted his visor and looked down at John with an air of arrogance. His gaze shifted to John's maid and attendants behind him, a smirk forming on his lips as he spoke disdainfully.
"You have no right to question me. Call your lord; I am here on orders from Baron Redman White to find him."
His attitude was exceedingly arrogant.
John felt a surge of anger but recognized that this man was one of his older brother Redman's subordinates. Although he was puzzled by why a mere soldier would act so haughtily, he decided against confronting him directly for the sake of his brother's reputation and suppressed his discontent.
"I am John Stephen Knight. What do you want?" John's voice was steady and powerful as he fixed his gaze on the knight before him.
Upon hearing John's introduction, the knight appeared somewhat surprised but quickly regained his composure. He dismounted in haste; however, his demeanor remained filled with hostility, as if there were an insurmountable divide between them.
"I am a personal guard of Lord Redman!" the man shouted, pointing to the horses behind him to signify his distinguished status. He continued, "My lord returned to the territory yesterday and has sent me today to deliver an invitation for you to gather in Binhai Town."
With that, he waved his right hand and casually handed over an exquisite letter with a single gesture.
Faced with this somewhat disrespectful act, John did not get angry; he merely furrowed his brow slightly. This was not the time to dwell on such matters. He reached out calmly to take the letter, opened the envelope, and began to read the contents carefully, word by word.
The message was straightforward: "John, my brother, I have arrived in Binhai Town. I have been overwhelmed with affairs lately and truly have no time to come find you, so I sent a personal guard to deliver this letter. I hope you can find the time to visit Binhai Town; I promise there will be a surprise for you." Signed, Redman White.
After finishing the letter, a subtle smile appeared on John's face as he pondered what this so-called surprise from his brother could be.
