Das felt a deep sense of unease, completely unsure of why Lord Ling had summoned him. At that moment, he resembled a startled deer, standing frozen in place, filled with trepidation as he silently awaited his fate.
Time ticked by slowly, and Das maintained a state of heightened tension, to the point where his legs began to feel numb and sore. Just as he was about to crumble under the pressure, John finally appeared before him.
Seeing this, Das quickly lowered his head as if struck by lightning, not daring to meet John's gaze for even a moment. He silently prayed that Lord Ling would not take offense at his apparent rudeness.
John approached Das at a leisurely pace, placing the teacup he held onto the nearby sandalwood table with steady hands. A warm smile appeared on his face as he looked gently at the visibly anxious Das.
"How are you doing, Das? Since coming to our Salty Fish Village, have you been adjusting well?" John asked with a smile.
Das, still tense, found himself at a loss for words. He instinctively lowered his head again, his lips trembling slightly but unable to utter a single word. At that moment, his only thought was to hope that Lord Ling would forgive his foolishness.
John had long anticipated such reactions from these individuals, so he was not surprised by Das's silence. He smiled slightly and chose to ignore Das's nervousness, instead launching into his own announcement.
"Alright, Master Das, there's no need to be so tense. After careful consideration, I have decided to formally appoint you as the Chief Blacksmith of Salty Fish Village!"
The title of Chief Blacksmith did not cloud Das's judgment; after all, he was the only blacksmith in Salty Fish Village. If he wasn't the chief, who would be?
Without paying attention to Das's thoughts, John continued speaking. "I will provide you with ten apprentices. Your task will be to teach them everything you know."
He paused for a moment before continuing. "If you can teach one apprentice successfully, I will reward you with a gold coin. If you teach three apprentices well, you can choose the most beautiful unmarried female slave from among the Serfs in Salty Fish Village to be your wife."
Das had never considered teaching apprentices lightly; having once been an apprentice himself, he had ingrained habits of keeping certain skills to himself. However, upon hearing about the wife and gold coins, he suddenly felt that his skills were worth much more than he had thought. Teaching ten apprentices meant ten gold coins and three wives—especially if they were the most beautiful among the Serfs.
Das couldn't help but dream about it.
"My lord, rest assured I will teach them diligently! Where are those ten apprentices? I will go teach them right away!"
John smiled with satisfaction. "No need to rush; keep up this energy! Someone will bring them to you this afternoon. Guards, please take Das out."
Two guards entered and led the excited Das out of the room.
Seated comfortably on his cushioned chair, John smiled as he looked at the empty doorway. As long as the price was right, anything could be negotiated. Once these blacksmiths were trained up, they could start practicing weapon forging.
John was not merely focused on a few blacksmiths; he aimed to find ways to get involved in the arms trade. The volcanic jade business was too flashy and unsustainable; John needed a long-term venture. The arms trade was one of the most stable businesses on this continent—there would always be buyers.
With the blacksmith's matters resolved, John decided to rise and assess the situation in his territory. He couldn't rely solely on the reports from his Master; he needed to see the reality for himself to uncover any potential issues within the land.
"Bring me my armor and prepare my horse. I need to go out and take a look," he commanded.
