The banquet had ended, and only Redman and his two attendants remained in the main tent.
Redman noticed the concerned expression on his long-time attendant, Lai De Wen, and asked, "What’s on your mind?"
Lai De Wen replied, "I could tell something was bothering you during dinner."
"Well, it’s not about me, but about our chef, John."
"John?" Redman had been relying on Chef John quite a bit lately. Although the White Family of Blink County was merely a minor noble house, John’s culinary skills had attracted many nobles who were tired of military rations. They came to dine at his establishment, bringing gifts each time, which helped build an extensive network of connections for Redman. Some nobles even sought to conduct business discussions there; after all, who said that the culture of dining didn’t matter in another world? Good food could significantly enhance the effectiveness of negotiations.
"What about John?"
"He wants some extra help," Lai De Wen answered honestly.
"Extra help? Does he aspire to hold a position or something?" Redman’s tone was light-hearted, but he felt a sense of alertness rising within him. How could a mere chef think he could exert influence over him?
Lai De Wen didn’t dwell on it too much. As a Knight Attendant, he spoke plainly. "You know we’ve had a lot of guests recently."
"Yes."
"I just spoke with John in the kitchen. He mentioned that he needs to prepare meals for four to five hundred people at a time. Even on ordinary days, it’s still two to three hundred. The three people in the kitchen are working themselves to exhaustion. He asked me to relay that he wants to hire a few helpers."
Hearing this from Lai De Wen made Redman realize he had misunderstood the situation earlier. It was indeed unreasonable to expect Little John to manage everything alone; he had been treating him like a workhorse without providing proper support.
"Alright then, Lai De Wen, go find six people from the Militia who have some cooking experience and send them to the kitchen. Also, let John know he’s getting a promotion."
"A promotion? What kind?" Lai De Wen asked curiously.
Redman paused for a moment before responding. "He’ll be the head of the kitchen staff with a monthly salary of twenty Silver Coins."
In the kitchen, after finishing up with the dishes, John saw Lai De Wen approaching with six Militia members and quickly went over to greet them.
"Are these the extra hands you sent me?" John asked.
"You’re quite sharp! Yes, these are from Lord Redman," Lai De Wen replied with a grin. "And guess what? You’ve been promoted."
"Me? Promoted?" John couldn’t believe it; after all, his highest position in his previous life had merely been that of a class representative.
Lai De Wen handed John a pouch filled with coins. "The lord said you’re now our head chef with a monthly salary of twenty Silver Coins."
"How much?!" John exclaimed in disbelief. It wasn’t just that it was too much; it was staggering! One Gold Coin could be exchanged for Silver Coins, and one Silver Coin could be traded for copper coins.
The five guards of the White Family in town earned a decent income, with a monthly salary of around four Silver Coins for a typical noble chef. However, chefs often had additional sources of income.
When he opened his coin pouch, he discovered not only twenty Silver Coins but also five gleaming gold coins.
"Sir, what is this?"
"This is a reward from the lord. Once he acquires his territory, you will be the head chef there," Sir Lai De Wen said, mimicking Redman's way of making grand promises to John.
"Yes, I will definitely do my best." John felt a surge of strength in his arms as he looked at the gold coins in his pouch. This was equivalent to receiving a bonus that doubled his recent pay for his outstanding performance.
