In the evening, hiding in the kitchen, John held onto his cooking utensils, savoring the tranquility of this little space. He felt grateful to be alive while contemplating the ingredient combinations for tomorrow's meals.
"Where did you run off to, Little John?"
Just as he was about to drift off to sleep, he was startled awake by a shout from outside. Instinctively, he grabbed a kitchen knife but quickly set it down, a smile spreading across his face as he crawled out from under the straw mat.
It was Lai Gen. "What's up? Is it Captain and Macario who want a midnight snack?"
Lai Gen's dark face scanned the entire kitchen. "Midnight snack? Yeah, give me some."
John understood that Lai Gen was here to mooch off him. He picked up a small jar from beside the campfire and carefully placed it on the table. "This is leftover stewed pork from Captain and the others. Don't worry, it's clean."
Lai Gen took a spoonful of meat, eating while handing his backpack over to John. "This is a gift from Boss Macario. Give it a try."
John accepted the package with both hands and opened it to find a nearly new leather armor, a chest piece, shin guards, and a set of wrist guards inside.
"What’s this?" John asked, somewhat confused.
Lai Gen finished eating from the clay pot and explained briefly, "Captain agreed that tomorrow you can go pick up a weapon. Consider it your official initiation into our group. From now on, any spoils will be shared with you."
Understanding the implications of what was said, John hurriedly put on the leather armor. His clumsy attempts made Lai Gen burst into laughter. "The way you're putting it on, your clothes underneath are too bulky!"
No matter how much Lai Gen teased him, John had no intention of taking it off; this was his identity now and also his means of survival.
After checking that there was nothing left to eat in the kitchen, Lai Gen turned to leave. Watching him walk away, John finally adjusted his clothing beneath the leather armor.
The next day, everyone could see the joy radiating from John; a smile never left his face.
"What happened to John? He seems so blissfully happy today."
"Did you not see? That leather armor on him means we should treat him with respect; he's one of us now."
Ignoring the chatter around him, he brought the food into Captain Poland's tent and quietly waited for him to finish eating.
Captain Poland glanced at John, who was standing nearby, and casually asked, "Have you received your weapon yet?"
"No," John replied honestly.
"Oh." Captain Poland assessed John's physique and arms. "You should use a long-handled warhammer. Your arms are too short for swords and knives; it would be too difficult."
"Yes, Captain. I'll grab a long-handled warhammer to practice with shortly." John was eager to follow his leader's advice, especially since he had little knowledge of weaponry himself.
After responding, he turned away and waited for Captain Poland to finish his meal.
Once the utensils were put away, he slowly stepped back out of the tent, straightening his back after bending for so long, the joints creaking as he did so.
Finally finished eating, it was time to go collect his weapon.
