Under the dim light beneath the bridge, the crowd finally saw the figure clearly. However, her body—no, to be precise, she had no eyes, and her abdomen was hollow. Bloodied intestines hung down her legs, and her ribs were broken, flung open like two doors. Her heart, liver, kidneys, and spleen were all missing.
Feng Xing released his grip as the female ghost slowly raised her head. Two bloody, gaping holes marked her face, still oozing blood. From her movements, it was evident that she could see, yet she had already lost her sight.
"Who are you?" Her voice was coarse, like a broken bellows, wavering as if it might dissipate at any moment.
"We are people who can help you." Feng Xing stood with his hands clasped behind his back. If it weren't for the aura of death surrounding him, he would have appeared like a celestial being newly descended to the mortal realm.
"I... I can feel your power. That's why I didn't resist. But can you really help me?" The blood in the sockets of her eyes seemed to flow even more.
"Were your organs sold?" Yan Kongyue's voice remained calm, though the knuckles of her hands behind her back had begun to turn white.
"Yes!" The female ghost nodded slightly, her body trembling faintly.
Yan Kongyue took out a Retrieval Umbrella from her backpack and opened it. This time she stepped forward and shielded the ghost with it, blocking the view of her disfigurement.
"Ten years ago, I carried the hopes of my entire village and entered the county high school with excellent grades. But my family was too poor to afford my tuition. The county waived my fees, and I worked in the cafeteria for dinner. Yet I was still hungry and could only scavenge for scraps that could be exchanged for money to sustain my other two meals. My classmates mocked me and looked down on me. When my homeroom teacher found out, she often brought me food from home."
Though she had no eyes, gratitude and gentleness were evident in her expression.
One day after evening classes, I helped out in the cafeteria as usual. That day, the aunt who usually stayed late didn’t come because of family matters. So that night I didn’t get any food. I was so hungry that I couldn’t study; I thought about finding something to eat. But just as I jumped over the school wall, someone knocked me out.
When I woke up, I found myself lying in a strange room filled with things only found in hospitals—Shadowless Lamps, surgical knives, and other instruments whose names I couldn’t recall. But I knew it wasn’t a hospital because those tools were stained with blood. Moreover, the room was small and old; much of the paint was peeling off, and there were large patches of mold in the corners.
I was terrified at that moment. During that time, there were always reports about people being tricked into having their organs harvested. I wanted to escape; I truly wanted to flee! But they bound me to the bed.
Her voice began to tremble as fear made her hunch slightly forward, hugging herself tightly.
I wanted to grab a surgical knife to cut through the ropes binding my wrists, but I couldn’t reach it. Accidentally brushing against a tray holding the knives alerted those outside; they beat me and burned me with cigarette butts.
She cried out; her voice was hoarse.
They played with me long enough before taking my eyes first and then slicing open my abdomen. I didn’t know what they took; I couldn’t see anything but felt immense pain—excruciating pain! Yet I sensed them removing many things from my belly.
Her voice grew increasingly calm—eerily so—as Lin Qian clenched his fists tightly nearby while several armed police squatted on the ground with their heads bowed; even the one who usually smiled had red-rimmed eyes.
I heard them say that my liver was very good—healthy without any fat—and that my kidneys were also excellent and could fetch a high price. Later they said I was dead and stuffed me into a bag before tossing me into this river.
"Why did you harm so many people?"
"The river is too dark and too cold," she continued. "I was scared and wanted to go home, but they didn’t know where my home was nor could they take me away from here."
"You harmed so many people; you will be thrown into Sulfur Fire Lake."
The female ghost suddenly lifted her head. "Can you kill me then?"
"You don't want revenge!"
"Of course I do! I dream of killing them, but I can't see anything, and I can't leave this place. I have no way to find them!"
"Do you remember where you were taken from?"
"Outside the wall to the west of Songyuan County High School."
"Songyuan County!" Lin Lang asked in surprise.
"Yes, I'm from Linshui Town, Xiao Lin Village."
"Is your father named Chang An?"
