Huo Jingyu shrank his neck at the blow he received.
"Wait, is the Ghost Guardian you’re talking about the same one I’m thinking of?" Wen Nuan blinked at Lin Qian.
"Which Ghost Guardian are you thinking of?" Huo Jingyu shot back with a probing question.
Yan Kongyue turned his head away, Feng Xing pretended to doze off with his arms crossed, and Lin Qian leaned wearily against the back of his chair. They couldn’t bear to watch, so let those two chat; it would save everyone some brain cells.
As it turned out, Huo Jingyu and Wen Nuan didn’t disappoint anyone. The two chatted all the way, and everyone could tell they actually clicked. Their fields of knowledge were different, yet they managed to complement each other perfectly, becoming answers for one another.
After nearly an hour on the road, the car finally stopped in a parking lot.
"Damn, this is a Scenic Spot?" Huo Jingyu scratched his head.
"Hey, you didn’t talk much on the way; feeling a bit itchy in your brain?" Lin Qian laughed as he draped an arm over Huo Jingyu's shoulder.
"Yeah, why does my brain feel a bit itchy?"
"Because you’re growing a brain!" Lin Qian said before running off.
"Lin Qian, your mouth is getting sharper!" Huo Jingyu exclaimed as he chased after him.
Yan Kongyue watched them with a headache. Just as he was about to scratch his head, he recalled Lin Qian's words and put his hand down.
"Yan Consultant, wait for me a moment; I’ll contact the scenic area office!"
"No need; that would just alert them!"
"But the mountain gate is already locked; we can’t get in. Plus, the mountain is very steep. If we take a detour this late, it could be dangerous. People fall off the mountain every year."
"Don’t worry; I have a way to get you in."
After navigating some rugged mountain paths, they finally reached the mountain gate. Just as Yan Xiao Jun had said, the automatic doors were closed, and the small side door was locked as well.
To avoid startling anyone on the mountain with the sound of the automatic doors, Yan Kongyue approached the small door and reached through the railing. Just as he was about to touch the lock, Lin Qian tugged at him and glanced at Yan Xiao Jun before lowering his voice to say, "Shouldn’t we let Yan Captain and the others step aside?"
"We’re on official business; what’s there to be afraid of?" Yan Kongyue looked at Lin Qian in surprise.
"True, I almost forgot about that."
Yan Kongyue shot Lin Qian a glance before feeling around for the big lock. A flash of golden light appeared and disappeared in an instant as the lock clicked open.
The group filed in one after another. The rugged mountain path was dimly lit compared to city lights; under the moonlight, branches cast eerie shadows, and now and then an owl hooted, sending shivers down their spines.
Lin Qian shook off Huo Jingyu's hand once more. "You've seen so many ghosts already, yet you're still so timid. Why don't you just head back to the capital?"
"No, Brother Qian, have you ever noticed that when you're face to face with a ghost, it's not that scary? It's this kind of situation—when you can't see it and feel like it's everywhere—that's the most terrifying."
"I don't understand what you're afraid of. You have Ghost Guardian with you, and Yan Kongyue and Feng Xing are here too. What’s there to be afraid of?" The night forest was quiet, and Lin Qian tried to lower her voice, but it still sounded jarring.
"Exactly!" Huo Jingyu instantly let go of Lin Qian's hand, wrinkling his nose in disdain.
At that moment, Feng Xing, who was at the front, stopped in his tracks and spread his arms to block the people behind him.
