Returning to the parking lot, Yan Kongyue spotted two girls from a distance, leaning over their car and sniffing curiously.
"Fourth Brother, what do you have in your car?"
"Nothing much!"
"What are those little rascals sniffing at then?"
"Little rascals? Where?"
"How about I open up Ling Yan for you? Then you can see things that others can't!"
Lin Lang hesitated, torn between curiosity and fear. "What if I see a ghost when you're not around?"
"Just pretend you don't see it. Normal ghosts won't bother you for no reason."
"And what about the abnormal ones?"
"Don't you have a talisman?"
"Oh, right!"
"Just wait here for me!" Yan Kongyue knew Lin Lang was scared, so he decided not to open Ling Yan for him. Lin Lang didn't understand why Yan Kongyue wanted him to stay put, but he obediently stood there without moving.
"What are you two little cuties sniffing at?"
"Huh? You can see us?" The two girls looked about eight or nine years old, identical in appearance—likely twins.
"What do you think? What are you sniffing at?"
"We don't know; it just smells really nice here!" One of the little girls leaned closer to Yan Kongyue as she spoke, taking a deep breath.
"Wow, it smells so good! It's your scent!"
Yan Kongyue suddenly remembered that both girls were still minors. The Ling Qi within him was pure and sacred; with his Ling Qi nourishing them, the souls of the two children could ascend to Tianfu without having to face judgment in Difu.
Children who died at six years old had the purest souls, untainted by the world. After their death, Heaven would take them to Tianfu and raise them personally.
Yan Kongyue took out a small porcelain bottle from his bag. "Do you have any wishes?"
The sisters exchanged glances. "Can you help us tell our mom that we're doing well now? Please tell her not to blame herself; she's the best and bravest mom ever." The two children looked up at a building by the roadside.
"Do you want to tell her yourself?"
"Let's go!" the two children exclaimed in unison.
"I'll take you home!"
"Thank you, Sister!"
"Fourth Brother, wait for me in the car. I'll be back soon!"
"I'll go with you!"
"No, your talisman might hurt them!"
"Then I'll wait for you!"
Wang Xue stared blankly at the two portraits on the cabinet—one of her husband who had sacrificed himself three years ago, and the other of her twin daughters who had passed away just days before. In recent days, her tears had run dry; she longed for their family to be reunited, but she couldn't bear to leave her senile mother-in-law behind.
Ding dong, ding dong!
Wang Xue slowly got up to answer the door.
"You must be Ting Ting and Yu Li's mother!" The woman standing before her was dressed very simply, her eyes red and swollen, bloodshot, and her face pale.
"Yes!" Hearing her daughters' names made Wang Xue's eyes misty.
"I'm a friend they just met."
