As the major work became a hot topic of discussion across various sectors of society, Yan Qing was in the library, heartbroken as he revised his documents. When Tan Ming called him, it was just past eight in the morning.
"Where are you?"
The night before, the two had slept at a hotel, while their respective siblings were arranged to stay at another hotel. Tan Ming had slept soundly and, upon waking, felt the warmth of the space beside him—only to find it empty.
In the library, Yan Qing cleared his throat; his voice was still a bit hoarse.
"You’re at the library so early? Aren’t you feeling unwell?" Tan Ming asked, puzzled.
Yan Qing sighed. Of course he felt unwell; he was completely out of sorts, and the physical exertion from sports left him with no energy to laugh about it.
"I opened my eyes this morning and saw a message in the Thesis group. The teacher tagged everyone, asking us to upload our final drafts by five this afternoon."
"I was looking for you."
"No, you should stay with your brother. His sister took a flight last night and originally planned to wait in the city for two days until Yan Qing graduated so they could go home together, but Yan Qing had refused."
He also turned down his sister's offer to find him a middle school music teacher in the county.
"My brother took the high-speed train at six this morning."
"Right."
Tan Ming came over and brought Yan Qing a cup of soy milk. He stood behind him, placing his large hand over Yan Qing's as he moved the mouse. "What’s not revised?"
Yan Qing pointed out the issue. "The references—these citation formats are always wrong. It's driving me crazy."
"Let me take a look."
In less than two minutes, Tan Ming resolved the formatting issues. Yan Qing watched in admiration as Tan Ming skillfully navigated through the problems.
Yet Tan Ming found it hard to understand why Yan Qing was so troubled by such minor issues. "Is this really a problem? You came all the way to the library this early; you’re not avoiding me, are you?"
"Why would I avoid you? I really came here to revise my documents."
Tan Ming smiled, his gaze intense. "Are you scared?"
Yan Qing recalled the endless energy he had shown last night, feeling a pang of unease in his heart.
Tan Ming leaned in and kissed his cheek, then packed his laptop into his bag. "Let's go."
"Where to?"
"To Li Jianping's place. He invited us for dinner."
Li Jianping's restaurant was closed today, reserved exclusively for a celebration for a few special guests.
As they arrived, Master Ban emerged from the kitchen and greeted them with a smile. "You made it!"
" Master Ban, you can cook? Why are you coming out from the kitchen?"
Master Ban chuckled. "Oh, Old Li is my boss now. I’m just helping him out."
"Sounds good," Yan Qing remarked.
"Do you need our help?" Shen Jianghuan and Jiang Jie entered together, smiling as they asked.
Master Ban wiped his hands on his apron. "No need, the dishes are already cooked!"
Qi Qiuluo barged in and slammed the door shut behind him, pointing at the man outside with gritted teeth. "How many times do I have to tell you, Jiang Li? Try following me again!"
"Xiao Luo, I’m not following you! How many times do I have to explain? I'm also a guest here today."
Qi Qiuluo smirked and dug into his ear mockingly. "What? Did you say guest? Which blind fool invited you? Do you think you deserve to sit with us?"
Jiang Li scanned the group before locking eyes with Tan Ming. "He did! Tan Ming invited me!"
Qi Qiuluo cursed under his breath.
Tan Ming shot a cold glance at Jiang Li, who responded with an awkward smile.
Zhang Liu arrived shortly after and pushed the door open. Seizing the opportunity, Jiang Li slipped inside as well.
Zhang Liu brought a bottle of red wine. After filling a glass for himself, he poured another for Tan Ming and said, "Senior, I'm going on an exchange program in my senior year. My flight is tonight. Wishing you a happy graduation in advance!"
"And I wish you all the best," Tan Ming replied with a smile.
This morning, Zhang Liu mustered the courage to call Tan Gu and tell him that it was his sister who altered Tan Gu's college entrance exam choices back then, not Tan Ming. To his surprise, Tan Gu was completely unfazed. "I already knew," he said. "Your sister apologized to me a long time ago."
In that moment, Zhang Liu felt an immense sense of relief wash over him.
"Wait, have you all eaten?" Ling Xingyuan exclaimed upon seeing the dishes on the table already served, his eyes widening in anger.
"Who told you to come so late!" Fan Xiaonan shot him a glare.
Ling Xingyuan and Fan Xiaonan exchanged barbs back and forth.
Liu Xuanzhu glanced apologetically at everyone and pulled Ling Xingyuan aside, speaking softly, "Xingyuan, you need to return the money my mom gave you."
Ling Xingyuan was reluctant. "Why should I give it back? She gave it to me! Dai Zi, are you stupid? Twenty thousand! I've never seen so much money in my life!" His eyes sparkled with excitement.
Liu Xuanzhu sighed. "That was my mom's breakup fee for you. If you keep it, what are we supposed to do?"
Ling Xingyuan looked at him as if he were a fool. "Underground romance? Haven't you heard of it?"
Liu Xuanzhu was not pleased.
Once the money was in Ling Xingyuan's hands, there was no way he would part with it.
Suddenly, Yan Qing's phone rang.
He answered it.
On the other end, a voice said, "This is Cold-hearted. I'm at the hospital. Never mind."
Yan Qing felt disinterested as he replied that they couldn't wait any longer to eat.
"Why are you at the hospital?"
"I'm handling He Zhengwei's affairs." Wang Zhiqiang had also been on his way to the gathering when his father called him back.
