After he finished speaking, Yan Qing's seemingly fierce wolf-like face fell, his gaze becoming deep and distant.
"Who started the fire?"
"The culprit," Tan Ming assured him.
Yan Qing let out a light laugh, tinged with mockery. "Then what am I?"
"Isn't he the culprit?"
"He’s the one who became a werewolf and narrowly escaped being voted out."
"Let’s consider him human," Tan Ming replied, attempting to offer some comfort, though his tone sounded like he was telling a cold joke.
Yan Qing sighed.
The ever-evolving and mutated flora and fauna on campus were already enough to keep people on edge, and now those around him had also become potential suspects.
With constant danger and unending mutual suspicion—self-doubt included—Yan Qing felt somewhat numb. These days of never being able to guess the culprit were utterly dreadful.
He couldn't say he was giving up; on the contrary, he wanted to confront whoever was pulling the strings behind the scenes! At least that would feel more straightforward.
"You haven't found the arsonist?" Yan Qing stated rather than asked.
If they had found the one who started the fire, Tan Ming wouldn’t look so displeased.
The chef and Xu Le didn’t remember anything; they even pointed fingers at each other. Qi Qiuluo might know something but chose not to speak. Tan Ming said coldly, his tone revealing dissatisfaction with Qi Qiuluo’s deliberate silence.
"Why isn’t Qi Qiuluo saying anything?"
"Who knows? Qi Qiuluo has his reservations and doesn’t trust him."
Despite Tan Ming's calm demeanor, Yan Qing could still sense the underlying anger. He thought to himself that the conflict between the two wasn’t new; he tried to mediate, suggesting that while Qi Qiuluo seemed offbeat, he knew when to be serious at crucial moments—just talk to him.
Tan Ming raised an eyebrow, somewhat dismissive.
It wasn’t just Tan Ming’s goal to find the culprit; it was everyone’s objective. So he didn’t quite understand why Qi Qiuluo was making things difficult for him alone.
"I think there are other directions we could explore. Do you remember the letter we unintentionally discovered in the Principal's Office?"
"I remember."
"I saw what was mentioned in the letter about the Plum Blossom Tree."
"The Plum Blossom Tree?"
"Is it the Millennium Plum Tree that the Old Principal lamented about?"
Yan Qing said, "After I left the cafeteria, my Beastly Nature was triggered, and I almost turned into a wild beast. It wasn't until I ran under that Millennium Plum Tree that my inner rage and impulse were suppressed. I even had a dream where it spoke to me." Yan Qing found it absurd, but that was the truth.
"Ever since he woke up, his Beastly Nature hasn't been disturbed by any other plants or animals."
"He believes it must be related to that Plum Blossom Tree."
"What did it say to you?"
"It asked me why I hadn't come to find it; it mistook me for another person."
Tan Ming pondered for a moment. "Actually, there’s something I haven’t told you."
He had almost revealed it last time but was interrupted by a sudden attack.
"This matter has been discussed among the messengers like Shen Jianghuan and Zhang Liu."
"What is it?"
"The system's Beastmaster might not be human; it could be a set program or perhaps something supernatural."
"Huh?" Yan Qing didn’t quite understand.
"The anomalies on campus began only after this system awakened. The messengers' mission is to find the culprit and eliminate them, but it seems like there’s only one goal: to dismantle this system."
"Of course, we could also assume that the geomagnetic storm triggered the system's awakening. But the system could have initiated the anomalies right after waking up; it could have eliminated all of us from the start, yet it didn’t. Instead, it set up this program to give us hope and entrusted us with the authority to deal with the culprit. Why would it do that?"
Tan Ming shook his head. "I’ve been unable to figure that out. Just last time when the culprit set fire, I suddenly realized that perhaps eliminating us wasn’t their goal. It’s like how the culprit could have killed the chef but chose to spare him instead, opting to kill an ordinary person like Qi Qiuluo."
"The culprit might be trying to uncover secrets through us. These secrets could involve ghosts, myths—things that previously existed only in stories. So, any suspicion you have could very well be valid."
Tan Ming paused for a moment. "Even that deceased Wang Xiaoyan might be a clue."
Yan Qing found his words a bit convoluted but grasped his meaning: no suspicion should be overlooked, even if it seemed unbelievable.
The Plum Blossom Tree is certainly something that needs to be investigated. However, Qi Qiuluo is currently the most promising lead, Tan Ming stated succinctly. No matter how mysterious the Plum Blossom Tree may be, it can't speak after all.
Yan Qing did not deny that what he said made sense. So, what do you plan to do? How can we get Qi Qiuluo to speak? If we could have gotten any answers at the Qi Qiu Luo Restaurant, we would have done so long ago.
