"Oh? Is that so? Do you have any evidence?" Ning Chuan asked me with great interest. It was clear that the boss above had been waiting for Chen Ming and Ning Chuan to make a mistake so he could kick them out. At this moment, they were being extremely cautious; even a slight misstep could provide an excuse for the higher-ups to eliminate them.
The matter of embezzlement and kickbacks was neither too big nor too small, but it was certainly enough to pique Ning Chuan's interest! I smiled and said, "No, but obtaining evidence isn't difficult. All you need to do is come with me, Ning Duozhu."
"Are you sure you'll be able to get evidence if I go with you?" Ning Chuan inquired. I chuckled and replied, "Of course! After all, you are the Helmsman. If I go alone, I might not return. Who would dare touch you?"
"That makes sense!" Ning Chuan nodded in agreement and then asked if he should bring a few bodyguards.
"Bringing bodyguards isn't a bad idea. Are you afraid they might act against you? If they had the guts to do that, it would be a serious crime— they'd be finished! Don't you know who the Helmsman of He Nan is?" I asked with a smile.
"True! They wouldn't dare act against me. I should keep this operation confidential; bringing too many people would make it too easy to expose." Ning Chuan agreed, realizing that if Chen Ming found out about this matter, it would be over. Naturally, he wanted to keep his movements discreet.
"Of course, the people around you are all prominent figures. If you bring too many along and they notice unfamiliar faces, they'll definitely realize you're up to something else. In my opinion, I can handle it with just my people," I said with a grin. After hearing this, Ning Chuan nodded in agreement, stepping right into the trap I had set for him!
Without a doubt, Ning Chuan agreed to my plan. Such matters should be dealt with promptly. We arranged to head to He Nan together the next day. However, he did not heed my advice about not bringing personal bodyguards and still brought two along. Two wasn't too many and wouldn't affect my plan.
"Xiang Dong, this car of yours really isn't up to par; it's too low-end! For this operation, I'll gift you a Lamborghini!" On the way to He Nan, Ning Chuan lamented from my car. I laughed at his comment. A Lamborghini? If I really managed to kill Chen Ming, I'd be the next one dead! As if I'd be getting a Lamborghini—am I three years old?
"Then let me thank you in advance, Ning Duozhu! Don't worry; this matter will surely succeed!" I said with a smile. In my car were only Ning Chuan and his two bodyguards, while a few of my subordinates followed behind in another vehicle.
On the surface, there were only these few people, but in reality, I had already sent Wan Fei ahead to He Nan to help set up this scheme.
Time passed slowly; after a few hours of driving, we arrived in He Nan. However, I did not act immediately. When Ning Chuan asked why we weren't taking action right away, I casually made up an excuse saying that one of my subordinates from the Fake Currency factory had informed me that they were relocating.
Although the Fake Currency factory was technically under Kyoto Headquarters' jurisdiction, it was still managed by Chen Ming! The factory moved locations every so often or whenever there was a risk of exposure; it was random. Even when they reported back, it was always to Chen Ming who oversaw them.
"Oh, then let's wait for a day due to this unexpected situation."
Ning Chuan nodded and then I took them to find a hotel to rest. This hotel was a place I had arranged with Wan Fei long ago, and he had already set everything up for me.
We opened a room; Ning Chuan stayed, I stayed, his two bodyguards stayed, and the remaining two of my subordinates stayed. All five rooms were equipped with cameras and listening devices that I had Wan Fei installed in advance.
In truth, there was no need to eavesdrop on the bodyguards and my subordinates' rooms, but before checking in, I didn't know which room Ning Chuan would choose, so I decided to listen in on all of them.
Now, I was watching the screen showing Ning Chuan chatting with his two bodyguards. After tomorrow's events, I would find an opportunity to kill Xiang Dong and frame Chen Ming and the people from the Fake Currency factory. Remember, it must be done cleanly and neatly, leaving no evidence behind.
Ning Chuan instructed his two bodyguards, who quickly responded. Watching this made me chuckle.
I thought Ning Chuan would want to kill me after Chen Ming fell from power, but instead, he had dirt on Chen Ming and was thinking of taking my life as well while framing Chen Ming's subordinates for harming their own kind.
Not bad, not bad at all. This should be their true colors; I wasn’t naive enough to be manipulated without realizing that working for a tiger would not lead to a good outcome.
While Ning Chuan was plotting schemes with his bodyguards about how to eliminate me effectively, I lost interest in listening and switched the video feed to Xiao Yi’s room.
In Xiao Yi’s personal room, he opened his bag and took out a knife, repeatedly wiping it as if deep in thought. Was he perhaps feeling guilty about deciding to kill me?
After all, no matter what happened, I had helped him before. If he were to harm me for his own glory and wealth, it would be a betrayal of our past.
But guilt is one thing; choices are another. I knew Xiao Yi would definitely take action. At this moment, the truth was already surfacing; I felt no emotions—neither sadness from betrayal nor joy from success. I only knew that once you made a choice, you had to pay the price!
On this dark night perfect for murder, Xiao Yi would surely choose to act at night. I knew I would have things to do that evening; there probably wouldn’t be time for sleep. So I took a solid afternoon nap until Ning Chuan came to wake me up for dinner.
“Xiang Dong, wake up! It’s time for dinner,” Ning Chuan said with a smile as he nudged me.
“Oh,” I replied groggily as I opened my eyes and followed Ning Chuan downstairs. The hotel had a dining area where Wan Fei had already arranged our meal.
Before we ate, I sent Xiao away under the pretense of new information and told him to go meet my contact; he had no choice but to comply.
“Bring me two Australian lobsters, some bird's nest soup, and one serving of abalone each. Xiang Dong, what do you want to drink?” Ning Chuan asked with a smile.
I chuckled modestly and replied, “Latu will do.”
It wasn't my money anyway! Ning Chuan walked into Huangquan Road, and it wouldn't hurt to treat him to something nice.
Haha! Alright! Latu, let's go!
Ning Chuan chuckled as he closed the menu and handed it to the waiter, who was actually one of my people—or rather, one of Wan Fei's people. Even the kitchen staff were on my payroll.
I had already prepared a knockout drug for them in the food!
Drink up! Eat meat!
Everyone was having a great time! Ning Chuan seemed delighted and drank quite a bit. When he drank, everyone else had to follow suit, and soon enough, they were all quite tipsy. As the effects of the knockout drug kicked in, everyone collapsed in the private room, including me!
When we all fell down, Wan Fei made his entrance, administering the antidote to me and then carrying each of them back to their respective rooms. To make it look more convincing, I drank a bit more and quietly waited for Xiao to return.
Dong Ge, I went. This is a letter they gave me, claiming it's something crucial that I need to bring back to you.
An hour later, Xiao came into my room with a letter. In reality, it was just a map of a factory—not even related to the Fake Currency factory—so it was of no real importance. Xiao had been gone for quite some time; I had intentionally delayed his return.
Alright, I got it. You can put it down now; I've had too much to drink and need some sleep.
I pretended to be drowsy as I spoke. Xiao acknowledged me and then asked, "Did Ning Duozhu drink too much as well? In such a short time, how much have you had?"
He drank too much; Ning Duozhu can really hold his liquor and drinks quickly. But it's fine; I'm not bad either. Ning Duozhu is resting in his room now. You didn't eat; find something for yourself. I'm going to sleep.
I smiled helplessly at the novel and said okay before turning to leave my room. After that, I activated the surveillance in the small room to keep an eye on Xiao's movements.
After staying in his room for a while, Xiao left again. I guessed he went out to eat. I called Wan Fei, who informed me that Xiao was downstairs dining.
Time to take action.
I issued instructions to Wan Fei, who then entered my room and together we went to Ning Chuan's room to carry him onto my bed and cover him with a blanket without revealing our faces.
Then Wan Fei and I continued monitoring the surveillance footage from both the small room and Ning Chuan's room.
Dong Ge, do you think Xiao can really go through with it? Will he notice something's off? Could there be any unexpected incidents?
Wan Fei asked me, and I chuckled in response.
He will go through with it, and there won't be any surprises.
I replied calmly; this matter was already set in motion. Xiao definitely wouldn't want to face the reality of repaying kindness with malice. Would he even lift the blanket to check my face before deciding to kill me?
Of course not.
After finishing dinner, Xiao returned to his own room. He didn't do anything else but sat on his bed, polishing a dagger while deep in thought.
Time passed slowly, and the corridor grew increasingly quiet. As midnight approached, the number of people dwindled, making it the perfect moment for something as sinister as murder.
At two in the morning, when people are in the deepest sleep, Xiao moved quietly to my bedroom door and pushed it open. I hadn’t locked the door, which didn’t raise any suspicion for him; after all, in his eyes, I had just drunk too much, and not locking the door was perfectly normal.
I stared at the screen, watching as Xiao crept closer with a dagger toward the bed where I should have been sleeping. The scene was eerily silent; I could hear my own heartbeat, as well as the heartbeat of Wan Fei beside me.
