Clearly, I had overthought things. Dreams are always simple, yet reality often proves to be complex.
"Alright, not bad. You've got a future ahead of you. I believe you were shocked today as well. Let's talk more about it later," Liu Haoran said with a smile. Cao Hui and I both agreed, and then we saw Liu Haoran off. The body of Xiong Li was naturally handled by Liu Haoran's few subordinates.
After leaving Xiong Li's house and seeing Liu Haoran off, I let out a long sigh of relief. One could say that today I had borrowed Cao Hui's hand to kill Xiong Li, or one could say that Cao Hui had used my assistance to eliminate Xiong Li. In any case, Xiong Li was dead, and his position was now vacant. If I were to take that position next, it would bring me one step closer to avenging Linna!
The strangest part of today was Zheng Yu. He remained as mysterious as ever. Why did he call us at this moment? How did he know we needed help? How did he know our plan? And why did he want to assist us? I had no clue.
"Wow, brother, you managed to pull Zheng Yu in as an ally?" Cao Hui said with a grin. Today, he seemed the happiest of all, but standing behind him was Lu Qiang, who dared not make a sound and looked extremely anxious.
He wasn't a fool; the situation had just concluded, and his earlier performance nearly put us in a dire predicament. Would Cao Hui keep him around? Moreover, in such situations, the fewer people who knew the better. If Cao Hui chose to abandon Lu Qiang, the only outcome for him would be death.
My relationship with Yu Ge was indeed quite good.
I chuckled and said, "Although admitting Zheng Yu is my ally at this moment might raise some concerns for Cao Hui regarding my abilities."
However, I still had to acknowledge it because if I didn't, Cao Hui would investigate Zheng Yu anyway. Zheng Yu's actions today were clearly in my favor; any investigation by Cao Hui wouldn't benefit me and might even lead to trouble.
"Alright, Xiang Dong. Now that Tiger Hall's leader Xiong Li is dead and the boss is looking at you like that, what are your thoughts?" Cao Hui asked with a smile.
I laughed upon hearing this, knowing that Cao Hui was giving me an opportunity. But could he really recommend me for Xiong Li's position? I doubted it; after all, Xiong Li's position was on par with Cao Hui's level, and the authority to appoint someone lay firmly in Liu Haoran's hands.
"Well, of course I have some thoughts on this, Cao Tangzhu. As the saying goes, if one doesn't aspire to be a general, they aren't even a soldier!"
I smiled as I spoke. After hearing this, Cao Hui nodded with a grin and then said to me: "You might not know this, but our Tian Ye Gang leaders and regional bosses are elected. Although there have been some changes recently, the leader still needs to be chosen through an election."
I was taken aback upon hearing this! If that's the case, then Cao Hui must have voting rights! And what did he mean by "some changes"?
I could guess what had happened; the leadership of Tian Ye Gang had changed hands. As they say, "a new ruler brings new ministers," so many upper-level positions must have been replaced without elections. This effectively disrupted previous rules; however, since the leader's position was relatively lowly regarded, it likely went unnoticed by those above.
Only four leaders had voting rights: Liu Haoran and Liu Laoda among our faction. The Qinglong and Xuanwu factions had already formed an alliance; if it came down to voting for a leader, they would definitely support someone close to them—two votes right there! It seemed Liu Laoda also appreciated you; he would surely cast a vote for you. His vote carried more weight than others.
Cao Hui paused after saying this. Suddenly realizing the implications of his words hit me: with two votes from Qinglong and Xuanwu plus Liu Haoran’s additional vote—Cao Hui’s vote would indeed play a crucial role!
One could say that his vote was key for me to ascend as leader! And at this moment, Cao Hui must be looking for something in return for making that vote count!
"Haha! Cao Tangzhu! Now that you've said that, I'm all in! Rest assured that no matter how far I go, I won't forget your kindness in recognizing my potential!"
I smiled as I spoke; what Cao Hui wanted was precisely such a promise! But deep down, I knew that even if I didn’t give him my word, he wouldn’t allow Qinglong and Xuanwu to unite like this either. If they elected leaders close to them among their ranks—four factions working together—what chance would Vermilion Bird Hall have?
Moreover, Liu Haoran likely wouldn't favor such developments either; hence today he deliberately showcased his support for me in front of Cao Hui—essentially sending him some kind of signal.
"Haha!" Cao Hui laughed heartily, patting me on the shoulder. "Brother, it's great that you think this way. I've been in Tian Ye Gang for quite a while now, and I know it inside out. You just stepped into society not long ago; without my help, you wouldn't stand a chance against them!"
Cao Hui chuckled as I smiled in response, unsure of how to reply. Who's to say who can't outplay whom?
We chatted for a while downstairs at Xiong Li's place, with Lu Qiang watching us from behind, not daring to make a sound. By the end of our conversation, Cao Hui and I had reached a basic consensus: he would cast his crucial vote for me. Although I was on the same level as Cao Hui, in reality, I was more like his subordinate.
Cao Hui was pleased. He didn't mention the incident where I had caused someone's death; he would only bring that up to intimidate me if I ever disobeyed him, ensuring that I would follow his lead closely.
After a few simple words and reaching an agreement, Cao Hui left. Once he was gone, I dialed Zheng Yu's number.
"Hello."
Zheng Yu's voice came through, cold and somewhat detached. I asked, "Why are you helping me?"
"Why shouldn't I help you?" Zheng Yu replied without any hint of concealment. I chuckled and pressed on, "What’s your motive? What do you want?"
"I want to help Linna get revenge. Is that reason enough?" Zheng Yu's tone was flat and emotionless, causing me to furrow my brow in surprise.
"You know about my relationship with Linna?" I exclaimed in disbelief. How could Zheng Yu possibly know this? If it wasn't just him but others from Tian Ye Gang who found out, both Linna and I would be in serious trouble.
"I do," Zheng Yu continued coldly.
I took a deep breath and began to assess the situation. How did Zheng Yu know about my connection with Linna? Today he managed to rescue us from Xiong Li so promptly—was there a listening device on me?
It must be that lighter! The one Zheng Yu gave me! Although I had checked it when I received it, it seemed my inspection wasn't thorough enough.
"What is your relationship with Lin Tianfeng?" I asked Zheng Yu. Lin Tianfeng had brought Zheng Yu into the organization years ago and wanted him to start from the bottom. It made me suspect that Lin Tianfeng intended to train and cultivate Zheng Yu. At that time, I even wondered if Zheng Yu was Lin Tianfeng's illegitimate son!
Now that Zheng Yu was helping Linna seek revenge, did that confirm his status as an illegitimate child? Was he my brother-in-law?
"Don't overthink it. Just remember that I will never harm you; I will only help you." Zheng Yu's voice remained calm and unchanging. Before I could finish my question, he hung up the phone.
I chuckled softly, tucking the phone into my pocket. I chose to believe Zheng Yu, at least for now. Although I couldn't be sure of his identity, if he intended to harm me, there would have been no reason for him to assist me tonight.
The task was completed without any major issues, and I drove home feeling somewhat satisfied. The house was empty; Linna had obediently stayed away. Once inside, I took out the expensive lighter that Zheng Yu had once given me.
This time, I disassembled it thoroughly, even pulling out the fuel chamber inside. Sure enough, I discovered a listening device hidden within! It turned out that I had been living under surveillance all this time!
I let out a breath and broke into a cold sweat. The life of an undercover agent truly meant being on guard against hidden dangers at all times.
Thinking about this, I dialed Linna's number. I knew she was probably awake, waiting for my call. There was something nice about knowing someone cared.
"Hello? Did you succeed?"
As soon as I called, Linna picked up after just one ring. I smiled and replied, "Yes, it was a success, but it almost failed."
"Haha! Are you trying to tease me again? Save it; I'm not falling for your tricks!"
Linna laughed heartily, but in reality, I wasn't joking this time at all. It was true; we had come close to failure. Thankfully, Zheng Yu had called just in time to help us secure evidence against Xiong Li.
I continued explaining the situation, and Linna gasped in surprise.
"What?"
I recounted the details of what had happened, and she was taken aback! Zheng Yu was willing to help her seek revenge?
"I told you before that Zheng Yu might be your father's illegitimate son, but you didn't believe me. If Zheng Yu has never pursued you or has no emotional connection with you, then he really could be your father's son. Think about it—can we confirm Zheng Yu's identity?"
I tried to keep my tone serious rather than playful because this possibility seemed the most plausible at the moment. If we could indeed confirm Zheng Yu's identity as Lin Tianfeng's son, then I could trust him a little more in the future.
