About a minute later.
“Brother Dong, heh heh, soy milk and fried dough sticks! I brought your share too.”
Xiao Huang had bought breakfast and placed it on the counter where I was sitting. In the morning, when there were no customers, employees were allowed to sit at the counter.
“Alright, just put it down.”
I nodded, and Xiao Huang set the breakfast on the counter. At that moment, Xiao also rushed over at the sound. Then, Xiao Huang pulled out an envelope from his pocket.
“Heh heh, Brother Dong, this is a little gift for you. Since you just took office, I don’t have much to offer you, so please accept it.”

I smiled at Xiao, who looked momentarily stunned before nodding in agreement without saying anything further and joined me for breakfast.
As we ate, I pondered how to get my hands on the account book from the winery. To obtain that account book, I naturally needed to make contact with the woman who delivered the wine. It was clear that she was Wang Meng’s girlfriend, and then I recalled that Kong Jian had also tried to curry favor with her before.
So I asked Xiao about the relationship between that woman and both Wang Meng and Kong Jian.
Xiao informed me that the woman was Xu Jiao, the owner of the winery. Xu Jiao was promiscuous; whenever Wang Meng needed wine delivered, they would end up sleeping together. Occasionally, someone like Kong Jian could also have a fling with her—Wang Meng didn’t mind.
I understood now that if I approached Xu Jiao, Wang Meng would likely support it since he had previously sent Liu Li to probe me but failed; Xu Jiao could easily take Liu Li’s place.
“What’s wrong, Brother Dong? Are you holding a grudge against Xu Jiao? Here’s my suggestion: although this woman has played around with Kong Jian before and doesn’t care about Wang Meng much, her relationship with Wang Meng isn’t bad. Once, when Xu Jiao was caught with another man outside, Wang Meng brought a group of people to chop off that man’s hand.”
Xiao said to me knowingly about how I had once been beaten by Wang Meng after bumping into Xu Jiao.
I responded with a bland "oh," thinking about whether I should take action. I had been involved in the Underworld before, so it wasn't like I hadn't seen things like this. However, I wasn't looking to take revenge on Xu Jiao; it was simply that she had something I wanted, and Wang Meng wouldn't send anyone to harm me.
"Hey, Xiang Dong, you're up early!"
I was chatting with a vendor while having breakfast when Wang Meng walked in with a small bag, greeting me cheerfully.
"Hey, Brother Meng, you're also up early."
I quickly responded with a silly grin. Wang Meng smiled back at me but didn't say anything further before heading upstairs. Wang Meng was going to work, and Xu Jiao would soon be delivering drinks. If I wanted to get close to Xu Jiao, I needed to let Wang Meng see that I was interested in her. Then Wang Meng would facilitate my interaction with Xu Jiao; otherwise, given my current standing, it would take some effort to approach her.
"Go ahead and eat; I've finished."
I didn't respond to the vendor's comment. After giving Xiao Yi a nod, I stood up and left, heading straight upstairs to knock on Wang Meng's office door.
"Hey, Xiang Dong! What brings you here?"
Wang Meng greeted me with a warm smile upon seeing me, looking entirely different from the person who had hit me earlier.
"Ah, Manager Wang, I don't have anything special to discuss; it's just that you assigned me as the manager yesterday, and I haven't asked you about the resources yet."
I gave a hearty laugh and pretended to feel a bit awkward. In reality, I was just looking for an excuse to wait for Xu Jiao in Wang Meng's office. After hearing this, Wang Meng chuckled and said, "Right! I haven't explained the resources to you yet; that was indeed my oversight."
Then Wang Meng continued: "So here's the deal: our resources consist of a base salary plus commission. Your base salary is one thousand yuan, and your commission is ten percent of all the services they provide. Do you understand?"
Wang Meng looked at me with a smile as I nodded eagerly, indicating that I understood. The commission meant that for every table cleaned up, there was a ten yuan commission. On top of that, with bottle caps included, a service could earn around four thousand yuan in commissions in a normal month. For each service rendered, I'd earn four yuan—simple enough.
But I couldn't just leave it at that; I needed to keep the conversation going since Xu Jiao hadn't arrived yet. So I asked Wang Meng if he could guide me on what I should do now that I've just become a manager and wasn't familiar with the rules.
Wang Meng patiently explained that I didn't need to do any actual work; all I had to do was supervise the services. If they were late, I'd deduct their pay; if they didn't clean properly, I'd deduct their pay; if they made mistakes, I'd deduct their pay. In short, my job was simply to manage the services and enforce penalties!
It was straightforward but impressive!
After about ten minutes of detailed questioning where Wang Meng answered all my queries with a smile, I knew he must think I was foolish for needing so much clarification on such simple matters.
Ding ding ding.
Just as I sensed that Wang Meng was about to lose patience with my incessant questions, there was a knock on the door. I knew this was when Xu Jiao would arrive.
"Come in!"
Wang Meng sighed in relief as he called out. It was clear he was happy Xu Jiao had arrived. He continued patiently advising me: "Xiang Dong, your job isn't complicated at all. Just go downstairs and find an experienced service worker who can tell you how it's done. If anyone gives you trouble or bullies you, come find me."
Wang Meng said this with a smile, clearly implying that he didn’t want me bothering him about these trivial matters anymore! After hearing this, I obediently nodded and said okay before standing up. As I turned around, I saw Xu Jiao stepping through the door.
In an instant, I froze in place!
Of course, this is all an act of mine. I came to Manager Wang's office with this purpose, to make Wang Meng think that I was attracted to Xu Jiao!
"Manager Wang, what is he doing here?" Xu Jiao looked at Manager Wang in confusion. Of course, what puzzled Xu Jiao wasn't how I ended up here, but why Wang Meng was speaking so politely to me. She must have seen him talking to me when she first entered.
"Oh, Xu Jiao, this is Xiang Dong, the guy you bumped into a couple of days ago. Do you remember? He’s the new manager here now. He’s not bad; you should get to know him," Wang Meng said cheerfully as he immediately stood up.
Xu Jiao was taken aback. "What? He became a manager?"
Clearly, Xu Jiao couldn't understand why I had transformed from a mere service staff member just days ago into a manager now.
"Yes, this guy is quite impressive! He has a bright future ahead!" Wang Meng continued to praise me generously, and Xu Jiao looked at me again with renewed scrutiny. I couldn't help but smirk internally, but I maintained my innocent demeanor on the outside. I knew this scheme had worked; Wang Meng now believed I had my sights set on Xu Jiao, and he would surely encourage her to get closer to me.
"Well then, I really need to find an opportunity to have a drink with you, Xiang Brother. I've been thinking about what happened last time; it was my fault that you got dragged into it and ended up getting scolded by Manager Wang," Xu Jiao said with a smile.
Wang Meng's few words made Xu Jiao smile at me again. Although she might still be unclear about how I became a manager, she certainly thought I had some extraordinary background. I guessed she could sense Wang Meng's intentions as well.
"Oh, it’s fine! Is there a chance for us to have a drink together? That would be great!" I replied enthusiastically. Acting isn't easy; it all depends on skill! After hearing this, Xu Jiao smiled and said of course she would love to, then glanced at Wang Meng. He smiled back and said to me,
"Alright then, Wang Fei, you can go ahead and get back to work. I'll settle Xu Jiao's bill here. You can leave early today and go out for a drink with Miss Xu and get to know each other."
"Sure! Thank you, Manager Wang!" I replied like a naive fool, repeatedly thanking him. Wang Meng waved his hand with a smile as I left. Before exiting, I turned back and gave Xu Jiao a lingering look and smiled happily. At that moment, I felt like a complete fool, but I believed I had clearly conveyed my intentions before turning around and walking out.
However, once outside, I didn't leave immediately. Instead, I stood by the door listening to the conversation between Wang Meng and Xu Jiao inside the office.
