Liu Li stood in front of me, stammering and fidgeting, unable to find her words. She was no longer the confident person she had been before. I couldn't help but smile; after all, wasn't she just here to apologize? Why was she so flustered?
"Don't worry about it. Just do what you need to do," I interrupted her stammering. I had no intention of stooping to a woman's level, especially since Liu Li was just an ungrateful woman who hadn't really wronged me. I could simply keep my distance from her in the future.
However, when Liu Li heard me say that, a more troubled expression crossed her face as she glanced at the confused Xiao Dao beside me.
"Ah, well, I guess I'll just do what I need to do then. You two can talk," Xiao Dao said. He was honest but definitely not stupid; he could tell from Liu Li's look that he was in the way.
I was surprised by Liu Li's behavior. It was just an apology, after all. Why did she need to send everyone away? I began to think that her visit wasn't as simple as it seemed.
"Xiang Dong, I'm really sorry about what happened earlier. I was in a rush to get on stage and didn’t have time to explain things to Li Jian. How about this: can I treat you to dinner tonight after work? Consider it my apology," Liu Li said, stepping closer to me with a smile that seemed almost flirtatious.
Dinner after work? We finished late at night! Was she trying to suggest something else?
Suddenly, everything clicked into place. Wang Meng was afraid of me—afraid of the virtual brother behind me. He wanted to investigate me but had received a clear warning through text messages: if he dared to discuss these matters with me, my virtual brother would come after him.
So he wanted to ask questions but didn’t dare!
With that in mind, he knew nothing about my virtual brother and was worried. Thus, he sent Liu Li to seduce me and get closer to me. Once Liu Li and I were involved, she could slowly gather information about me and relay it back to Wang Meng.
I couldn't help but smirk at the thought.
"Forget it; there's no need for that. I've already forgotten," I said casually. Xiao Dao had previously told me that Liu Li and Wang Meng were involved. I could understand a man being lecherous and juggling multiple relationships, but the thought of someone sending their own woman off to another man made my stomach turn.
"What? Don't be like that, Dong Ge! You're still mad at me? Please don’t be upset! Tonight, I promise I'll make it up to you properly!" Liu Li exclaimed as she grabbed my hand.
I smiled back at her teasingly and asked, "So how do you plan on making it up?"
"Well, that depends on you, Dong Ge! I'm open to anything!" Liu Li replied shyly, adopting a demure demeanor while clearly engaging in something more provocative.
"Oh? Is that so? What if my demands are quite excessive?" I continued with a grin.
Liu Li's face flushed at my question; she shot me a playful glare and lightly punched my chest. "Hey! You're so annoying! What are you talking about?"
I chuckled at her reaction.
I chuckled to myself, clearly aware that they were seasoned veterans pretending to be novices. "So, what’s it going to be? If I make a request, will you agree?"
I continued to press on. Liu Li glanced at me and then shyly replied, "Oh dear, of course I’ll agree! You’re such a little troublemaker, already thinking about how to tease me!"
"Haha, that’s all I needed to hear."
I laughed heartily and said, "Then please disappear from my sight right now. That’s my request. Thank you for your cooperation."
I candidly stated my demand, guessing that Liu Li would think I was being unreasonable.
"What did you say?"
Liu Li was momentarily stunned. I smiled and said nothing more; she understood perfectly. From any angle, I knew I had to keep my distance from Liu Li. Why would I give Wang Meng a chance to investigate me? In the face of enemies, one must always maintain an air of mystery! It keeps them from acting recklessly.
"Xiang Dong, I really want to apologize. Do you think I'm not pretty enough?"
Liu Li persisted with her questions. It seemed Wang Meng had put a lot of pressure on her or promised her many benefits.
"Thank you for your cooperation."
I smiled at Liu Li again, making my intentions clear. She stared at me in silence for a moment before nodding and smiling back.
"Alright then, as long as Dong Ge doesn’t mind, I’ll get back to work."
With that, Liu Li turned and left, no longer trying to curry favor with me. Watching her retreating figure brought a smile to my face. Women are such a fascinating species; my earlier behavior must have offended this seemingly aloof woman. It seemed I would have to be cautious of her revenge in the future.
Afterward, several bold service staff approached me trying to win my favor, but I didn’t hold it against them and quickly dismissed them with a few words. Thus, the two most disgruntled staff members at Tianchi—myself and Little Knife—had suddenly turned the tables. I had taken on the role once held by Li Jian, while Little Knife now occupied a position similar to that of Xiao Huang back then.
However, Little Knife didn’t act like Xiao Huang; he merely followed my instructions and observed Xiao Huang handling various tasks without seeking revenge on others. This was something I appreciated about him; he wasn’t as vengeful as I was and seemed much more grounded in his work.
After work, I returned home feeling elated about my promotion. To celebrate this happy occasion, I decided to order takeout on my way home. I wanted to share the joy with Linna because it felt inappropriate to celebrate such a momentous occasion with her dark culinary creations.
But clearly, I had underestimated Linna's domineering nature!
"You actually bought takeout? You didn’t call me beforehand? What about the meal I prepared for you?"
Linna confronted me angrily. Stunned into silence, I thought to myself: usually when I come home, she’s busy doing yoga! Who knew she’d be so diligent today?
"Uh… well… I just got promoted today! Since I'm now in charge, I thought it would be nice to treat ourselves to something good. You usually don’t cook this early; I just forgot to call you—sorry! Let’s enjoy takeout today as if it were your cooking!"
I explained with a smile, feeling inexplicably guilty under Linna's scrutiny. It was as if I feared making her angry; perhaps I really had developed feelings for her?
After all, it’s only natural for a normal man living with a stunning beauty every day to feel those surges of hormones from time to time.
"Ha! Is that acceptable? I can't cook, but you can eat what I made for you!" Linna snatched the takeout from my hands, and I was momentarily stunned. You want me to eat what you cooked? You're eating my takeout?
Is this how you treat people?
I protested, but my objections fell on deaf ears. At the dining table, there were two of us, and while she enjoyed her meal, I struggled to swallow mine. The disparity in our treatment was stark!
What I bought was enough for two; you can't finish it all by yourself.
I watched Linna devour her pizza while the bowl of overcooked rice sat untouched before me. I tried to persuade her, pleading not to make me eat this awful food. I could wait for her leftovers!
But Linna showed no sign of listening. She set down her pizza and said, "You can tell me about today now."
With a resigned sigh, I put down my bowl. It seemed pointless to say more; it wouldn't help.
I recounted everything that had happened today, of course omitting the part about Liu Li. That was just a side note, and mentioning it wouldn't add any value. Besides, Linna was clearly petty; what if she minded?
"Oh, not bad. You’re quite clever to shield yourself," she remarked. "But I think Wang Meng is definitely not as cowardly as he seems. He’s afraid of your imaginary brother and won’t dare ask you directly. However, I suspect he’ll find someone else to get close to you and dig for information. You need to be careful; if someone uncovers your secrets, it won’t end well for you."
Linna praised me as she spoke, and I smirked in response. "You think so?" But I had to admit that Linna was sharp; she could guess that Wang Meng would send someone to probe into my affairs.
"And now that you can threaten Wang Meng, it’s no big deal. Your thinking is correct; this debt can’t be settled with Liu Fei alone. You need to get the account from Winery first; only then can you control Liu Fei."
"Got it," I replied impatiently. The difference in our treatment left me feeling a bit sour. Yet Linna seemed completely unfazed by my displeasure. She smirked and continued savoring her delicious pizza, occasionally putting on an exaggeratedly satisfied expression that made my teeth grind!
The next day, I went to work as usual, but today when I entered Tianchi, the atmosphere felt completely different from before. In the past, nobody paid me any mind when I walked in; occasionally I'd catch a few glances. But today...
"Brother Dong!"
"Brother Dong, you're here so early?"
"Brother Dong, have you had breakfast yet? Let me buy you some!"
Everyone greeted me warmly as they noticed my presence. Xiao Huang, holding a mop, even offered to buy me breakfast. I glanced at the half-cleaned floor and smiled at him.
"I want soy milk and fried dough sticks."
"Sure thing!" Xiao Huang responded eagerly before dropping his mop and dashing out. Did he really think that accepting his breakfast meant I forgave him? That was a bit naive!
