Ling Xue's eyes sparkled with anticipation as she turned to Hou Kang, excitedly saying, "Hou Kang, I want to go through all the unresolved case files. Perhaps I can find some clues." Without hesitation, Hou Kang stood up and walked over to the filing cabinet, responding as he walked, "Of course, these files have been sitting here for too long. Take a look; you might really be able to help." He opened the cabinet and took out a stack of folders, gently placing them on the table in front of Ling Xue.
Hou Kang returned to his chair and sighed helplessly, continuing, "Sigh, so far we’ve only completed one case about a missing pet. Many of our business opportunities have fallen through. You know I'm not very skilled in detective work; since the establishment of this agency, we haven’t had many serious cases." As Ling Xue flipped through the documents, she curiously asked, "Then how have you managed to keep going? Maintaining this agency must be difficult."
With a smile, Hou Kang replied casually, "Thanks to our close relationship with you and Liu Jiedong, Ling Na provides some financial support every month. With that money, our lives have become more comfortable, and we’ve managed to keep going without too much pressure." Hearing this, Ling Xue couldn't help but smile and then began to seriously examine the unfinished case files.
After some time spent reviewing the materials, Ling Xue set down the documents and tilted her head slightly, teasingly saying, "Hey, I’ve realized that my skills are best suited for cases like investigating affairs. After all, my observational skills and deductive reasoning should uncover quite a few secrets in this area." Hou Kang laughed heartily at her remark and teased back, "That would be fantastic! If you can solve these infidelity cases, our agency's reputation might just skyrocket, and business will surely flow in."
Ling Xue raised an eyebrow confidently and replied, "Well, that's not certain. I need to study these materials carefully first to see if I can find a breakthrough." With that said, she buried herself back into her research.
Just as Ling Xue was intently examining the case files, the door of the agency was suddenly pushed open with force. A weary-looking middle-aged woman stepped in; her attire was neat but her face was filled with anxiety. Upon seeing Ling Xue and Hou Kang, she urgently spoke up, "You are detectives, right? I need your help with something."
Hou Kang quickly stood up and approached her gently saying, "Please calm down and tell us slowly what happened. We will do our best to help you."
The woman took a deep breath in an attempt to steady her emotions before saying, "I suspect my husband is having an affair. He has been coming home later and later recently, and his behavior has become strange. He used to care about me and our children; now he seems preoccupied all the time. When I ask him if something is wrong, he always brushes me off. I felt helpless and decided to seek your help."
Ling Xue looked at the woman's pained expression and felt a surge of compassion. She softly said, "Please don’t worry; we will do everything we can to uncover the truth. Can you provide us with some specific details? For example, your husband's recent whereabouts or any unusual behavior or suspicious individuals?"
The woman pondered for a moment before replying, "He keeps saying he has to work late because there’s a big project at his company. I called his office to verify this; they said they weren’t that busy. Sometimes when he comes home he smells of unfamiliar perfume. Once I saw him secretly texting someone; when he noticed me he quickly hid his phone."
Ling Xue exchanged glances with Hou Kang as clues began forming in their minds. Ling Xue said, "The information you've provided is very useful. We will investigate your husband's whereabouts after work. You should also keep an eye on his phone and computer for any possible clues."
The woman nodded gratefully and said, "Thank you so much. I really hope you can help me get to the bottom of this matter. If he really is cheating on me, I don’t know what I would do."
