Ling Xue gazed at Fujiwara, and despite her still somewhat clumsy grasp of the Fusang language, she did her best to explain. "Fujiwara, I am truly not Nana Ko. I come from Xia Country. I heard there was a vacant house here, and since I need a place to stay, I came over. Please rest assured, I can cover the rent that Nana Ko left unpaid. My financial situation is still quite comfortable." As she spoke, Ling Xue took out a stack of cash from her bag and gently placed it on the table.
Fujiwara looked slightly taken aback. He recalled that Nana Ko had once sought a place here, signing a two-year lease but vanishing after just two months. The landlord, Yoshino, had searched for her multiple times, but six months had passed, and the house remained empty. Moreover, Nana Ko had left three months' rent unpaid.
Fujiwara scrutinized Ling Xue closely. Indeed, as she had said, upon further inspection, there were quite a few differences between her and Nana Ko. Ling Xue was more strikingly beautiful and possessed a distinct charm.
He couldn't help but chuckle. "Ah, young lady, your sudden appearance has truly confused me. However, your willingness to help cover the rent is a great relief for me. That house has been vacant for quite some time; it might need some tidying up before it's comfortable to live in. It was rented by Nana Ko before; she left in such a hurry that there are still some of her belongings inside, which I haven't cleaned up yet. If you move in, you'll have to take care of organizing it yourself."
Ling Xue smiled in response. "That's fine, Fujiwara; I don't mind tidying up a bit. Since I'm new here and not very familiar with the area, could you tell me more about the house?"
Fujiwara nodded and began to describe it. "The location of that house is quite good; shopping and transportation are very convenient nearby. If you have any issues, feel free to come find me; I live close by."
Ling Xue thought to herself that perhaps among the belongings left by Nana Ko, she might discover some clues related to her mission. She quickly said, "It's alright, Fujiwara; I'll handle those things properly. By the way, do you have the keys to the house? I'd like to take a look right now if that's okay."
"Of course! Here are the keys," Fujiwara replied as he rummaged through his drawer and handed them to Ling Xue. She took the keys with gratitude and followed the route Fujiwara pointed out toward the house.
On her way there, she felt both anticipation and an underlying sense that the house might hold many secrets waiting for her to uncover.
Before long, Ling Xue arrived at the door of the house. Taking a deep breath, she gently pushed it open. Immediately, a somewhat musty scent wafted toward her, as if carrying traces of time. The furnishings inside were not chaotic but upon closer inspection, it was clear that no one had taken care of this place for quite some time.
A thin layer of dust covered the furniture; cobwebs in the corners flickered in the dim light, and a faint musty odor lingered in the air. Despite this, Ling Xue felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity and warmth as if this place had once been known to her.
While sorting through clothes, Ling Xue's gaze fell upon some provocative outfits and maid costumes. She couldn't help but frown slightly as more complex speculations about Nana Ko's past arose in her mind. She set those clothes aside for now, planning to investigate later whether they concealed any clues.
Scattered across the floor were music sheets evidently left behind by Nana Ko during her music studies. Ling Xue quietly closed the door behind her and began to examine the interior carefully.
She first flipped through the music sheets looking for any special markings or handwriting that might reveal clues. During her search, she discovered Nana's identity card, student ID, and several photographs. One photo appeared to be a group picture with her sister; unfortunately, only half of it remained visible while the other half was missing, making it impossible to identify that face.
Ling Xue stared at the student ID in her hand and murmured to herself: "Ohashi Nanako, from now on I will thoroughly step into your world."
She carefully stored away the photographs and documents while determination shone in her eyes. "Shinkawa University," she noted mentally—this would be my primary focus moving forward. Perhaps there I could find traces of you before your disappearance; those hidden secrets must be unearthed.
Ling Xue clenched her fists as she silently planned her next steps. But who exactly was this sister in that half photograph? Did she know about Nana Ko's fate or was she also caught up in this dark vortex?
Ling Xue furrowed her brow as countless questions swirled in her mind. Regardless of what lay ahead, retreating was not an option for her. Since she had taken on this mission, she must uncover every detail—not just for herself but also to bring justice for Nana Ko and reveal the truth to the world. Taking a deep breath as if bolstering herself for what lay ahead, she began organizing her thoughts.
