Chang Gui typically refers to those who have been consumed by the Tiger Demon; their souls become attached to it, aiding the Tiger Demon in harming others. This is how the saying "to act as a pawn for the tiger" originated. Since ancient times, it has been said: "Li Gui are hard to discern, but Chang Gui are easily recognized."
Chang Gui appear no different from normal humans. However, they can be distinguished by a peculiar trait: male Chang Gui lack the little finger on their left hand, while female Chang Gui lack the little finger on their right hand. This is a curse from the Tiger Demon; in the cycle of Rebirth, souls must remain whole, but with this deformity, they cannot cross the Nai He Bridge to be reincarnated. The Chang Gui assist the Tiger Demon in harming others in hopes that it will one day return their missing fingers.
"New test subjects?" Lao Luo raised his eyelids slightly.
"Don't worry, the quality is top-notch! You can question my morals, but you can't question my abilities!" A Chang boasted loudly, thumping his chest.
"Hmph!" Lao Luo let out a soft snort, his fingers curling into claws as he gently pierced into Chang Gui's head. The Chang Gui immediately let out a horrific wail, his body trembling and his face contorted in agony.
"Go!" Lao Luo's pupils glowed with a purple light.
The eyes of the Chang Gui also turned purple instantly, revealing intricate symbols glowing within them. Just as Lao Luo issued his command, the Chang Gui's body became mechanical and stiff, vanishing into the ground.
"Five hundred thousand? That's a bit of a loss!" A Chang frowned.
"Not at all!" Lao Luo replied nonchalantly. "Besides, you’re not short on money!"
"Who would complain about having too little money?" A Chang chuckled.
“How much for this string of candied hawthorns?” Zuo Ci asked, standing in front of an old man selling them, pointing at the large and round candied hawthorn perched at the top.
The young man had sharp eyes!
The Old Man, spotting a business opportunity, smiled and said, "Not expensive at all! Freshly pitted Shan Zha, seven coins for one skewer, fifteen for two!"
"I'll buy two skewers!"
Clearly, Zuo Ci lacked extensive purchasing experience. He knew how to make money and had always longed to earn it. This desire stemmed from his first meal after descending from the Old Mountain—a bowl of noodles from a shop run by a blind girl.
They sold hanging noodles at a low price of four coins a bowl, complete with shredded meat and vegetables. However, he had no money at that time. Or rather, he didn’t even know what money was! After all, in the Old Mountain, the concept of money was nonexistent; families only understood that having children meant they could fill their bellies.
Girls were considered worthless and unwanted, seen as a liability. Boys, on the other hand, were precious. Even a boy missing an arm or a leg could be exchanged for three healthy girls.
One day, after Zuo Ci had eaten four bowls of hanging noodles, the blind girl asked him for money. He was utterly bewildered. Yes, our Daoist Zuo felt embarrassed for the first time. He had no money and didn’t even understand what it was.
Yet he had a notion in his mind that it should be something akin to the exchange rate between boys and girls. Seeing him silent, the blind girl thought he was trying to eat for free but didn’t scold him or threaten to call the authorities. Instead, she quietly asked if he wanted more noodles.
Zuo Ci nodded shyly and replied, "Yes!"
The blind girl found his ignorance amusing and cooked him another large bowl of hanging noodles, adding extra meat and vegetables, even including a fried egg. It was the best bowl of noodles he had ever tasted.
Later, as he left, he felt a twinge of anxiety for the first time. The blind girl waved her hand and told him to come back whenever he wasn’t full next time.
Zuo Ci thought for a moment and asked softly, "Is there anything you need my help with?"
The Blind Girl smiled.
