Kouya Toyo slowly raised his head, his gear-like pupils fixed intently on the glass of the Observation Room.
Deep within his consciousness, that faintly sweet fragrance lingered persistently.
It was not an ordinary syrupy scent, but rather... the genetic sequence of his sister.
“Pain brings clarity.”
Shen Zhao Yi's voice echoed from above the training ground. She lightly tapped the glass with her mahogany cane, looking down at the bloodied Kouya Toyo.
“Get on your knees.”
The cane traced an elegant arc through the air. The chip in Kouya Toyo's neck instantly heated up, a surge of electricity racing up his spine to his brain.
He dropped to his knees with a heavy thud, the metallic bones clashing against the ground with a piercing sound.
The training ground was thick with the smell of blood, remnants of Mechanical Hounds scattered across the floor, parts and circuit boards still dripping with fresh blood.
Kouya Toyo's breaths were heavy and stifled, his gear-like pupils still spinning wildly.
Shen Zhao Yi descended gracefully, the sound of her high heels echoing clearly in the vast training ground. She approached Kouya Toyo and pressed her mahogany cane against his chin.
“How interesting. You are the first test subject to destroy a Mechanical Hound during testing.”
She squinted her mismatched eyes, the Artificial Eye Ring on her left hand glimmering with an eerie sheen under the neon lights, as if the pupils of the dead were silently screaming.
"But," she suddenly increased the pressure of her cane, "your expression just now was not that of a well-behaved dog."
Kouya Toyo swallowed hard, the taste of rust filling his mouth.
The sweet, cloying scent still lingered at the tip of his nose, sending his mind into a dizzying spiral. It was his sister's scent; he could never mistake it.
"It seems we need to step up your training," Shen Zhao Yi said, her cane slowly sliding down his spine. "Let's play a game."
Suddenly, a wave of intense pain engulfed him. Kouya Toyo's pupils dilated as every muscle in his body trembled. Shen Zhao Yi was using her Ability to transmit pain to him.
"You can transfer the pain to me," Shen Zhao Yi said softly, "but I will amplify it twofold in return."
Kouya Toyo gritted his teeth and transferred 90% of the pain to Shen Zhao Yi.
In the next moment, a tidal wave of two hundred times the agony surged through him, nearly shattering his consciousness.
Just then, Zhou Shenyong hurried into the training ground. Beneath his turtleneck sweater, an electric collar emitted a faint hum.
"Supervisor, there’s an urgent document that requires your attention."
Shen Zhao Yi withdrew her Ability and turned to take the document. Kouya Toyo collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath.
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of something brown smeared on the inside of Zhou Shenyong's cuff. The smell... it was identical to that of Sedative Syrup.
"Go change your clothes in the locker room," Shen Zhao Yi said to Kouya Toyo. "Don't let the blood stain the floor."
Kouya Toyo stumbled to his feet and made his way toward the locker room.
As he passed by Zhou Shenyong, he sharply detected a sour odor, reminiscent of the corrosive marks on the collar.
The door to the locker room closed behind him. Kouya Toyo fumbled to open the wardrobe, only to discover a hidden compartment deep inside.
There lay a charred Children's Vaccination Book, its photos blurred and indistinct.
Suddenly, an alarm echoed throughout the training ground.
"Warning! Intruder detected in restricted area!"
Kouya Toyo's heart raced. The birth date faintly visible on the vaccination book matched perfectly with the time his sister had gone missing.
