After several hours of intense battle and the upheaval at the altar, the team finally returned to their temporary camp in the desert. The night wind carried sand and gravel, stinging everyone's faces as if mocking them for everything they had just endured.
Lin Xi sat by the campfire, her gaze fixed on the crystal ball in her hands. Its surface was smooth and flawless, but within it, strange runes flickered faintly, resembling a language or perhaps a cryptic map.
"Leader Lin, what should we do next?" Chen Rui approached her, handing over a bottle of water.
"We need to take what the Guardian of the Altar said seriously," Lin Xi replied, her tone somber as she accepted the water. "He mentioned that the answers are hidden in deeper darkness. I believe he was referring not only to a geographical depth but also to dangers on another level."
"Deeper darkness?" Wang Ya furrowed her brow. "We’ve already exhausted ourselves fighting those aberrant creatures. What could be more terrifying than them?"
"Perhaps it's something we've yet to encounter, or an even greater conspiracy," Zhou Zheng suggested as he pulled out a map from the equipment box and spread it on the ground. "I checked the Satellite Map; ten kilometers east of this area is an Abandoned Mine. It might be connected to the altar."
"An abandoned mine?" Lin Xi nodded thoughtfully. "That’s possible. We need to head there quickly; we can't afford to overlook any clues."
"But we need to rest first," Chen Rui interjected. "The team is nearing their limits. If we don’t recover our strength, we might collapse in the next encounter."
Lin Xi glanced at the others; their faces were etched with fatigue and pressure, yet no one complained. She understood that as the leader, she had to find a balance between the mission and her team's safety.
"Let’s rest for two hours," she decided firmly, "but everyone must stay alert and take turns standing guard."
As night deepened, a low murmuring sound faintly echoed through the wind, like something lurking in the distance or a resonance coming from deep underground.
Half-awake, Zhou Zheng suddenly sat up. He looked around and saw that everyone else was sound asleep except for Wang Ya, who was dozing against a rock while on guard.
Curious about the sound, he picked up his weapon and took a few steps toward it, trying to discern its source. His feet made slight noises on the sandy ground, but the murmuring continued to linger in his ears, now seeming both near and far.
"Who’s there?" Zhou Zheng asked quietly, his voice tense as he switched on his tactical flashlight, but found nothing around him.
Just as he was about to return to camp, his foot slipped into a loose sand pit. He quickly stepped back only to find that the pit was rapidly collapsing, revealing a bottomless hole.
"Leader Lin! Wake up! I found something here!" Zhou Zheng shouted urgently as he turned back.
Before he could finish his sentence, he was swallowed by the sand and fell into the opening.
When Zhou Zheng opened his eyes again, he found himself lying in a narrow underground passageway. Above him lay the freshly collapsed sand, while the walls around him were made of hard black rock, resembling a tunnel carved out by human hands.
He stood up and swept his flashlight beam across the rock walls, discovering them covered with symbols and patterns similar to those at the altar.
In the center of these symbols was a massive mural that seemed to depict some kind of ritual process. In the image, a tall shadow stood before an altar while cracks opened in the ground, allowing entities from another world to crawl out through the fissures.
"Is this another altar?" Zhou Zheng's heart raced as he quickly used his communicator to contact his teammates. "Leader Lin! I've fallen into an underground cave southeast of our camp!"
Static crackled through the communicator but received no response.
"Damn it," Zhou Zheng gritted his teeth and continued down the passageway, hoping to find an exit.
In the camp, Lin Xi suddenly woke up, the crystal ball in her hand emitting a faint red glow, resembling some sort of alarm.
