The harsh buzzing sound exploded in the team members' ears, resembling the roar of some unknown creature, or the sharp screech of metal grinding against metal. The entire hall seemed to be torn apart, with cracks spreading across the floor, revealing a faintly flowing black liquid beneath.
"Fall back! Don't look back!" Lin Xi shouted as she steadied the swaying Chen Rui, commanding everyone to rush toward the exit.
The immense suction force nearly lifted them off the ground, and Crystal's glow grew increasingly blinding, like blades stabbing at their eyes.
"Leader Lin, something's wrong!" Wang Ya gasped, "These cracks aren't ordinary; they're expanding!"
Lin Xi turned to look, and what had been mere small fissures beneath their feet had now spread to the walls and ceiling. More terrifying was that the black liquid seemed to be crawling out of the cracks, like living tentacles slowly advancing toward them.
"Don't stop! Everyone speed up!" Lin Xi growled, forcing herself to suppress her fear.
They ran with all their might toward the entrance, but the liquid appeared to be faster than they were. Chen Rui misstepped and fell to the ground, a black tentacle swiftly wrapping around his ankle.
"Leader Lin!" Chen Rui cried out in despair, gripping the ground tightly.
Lin Xi quickly turned around and drew her dagger, slashing at the tentacle. To her horror, it regenerated after being severed and grew thicker, almost dragging Chen Rui into the crack.
"Don't give up!" Zhou Zheng rushed over, raising his gun and aiming for the base of the tentacle before pulling the trigger. The bullet tore through it, allowing Chen Rui to finally break free, though his face had turned pale.
"Thank you," Chen Rui gasped. Before he could regain his footing, he heard an eerie sound coming from behind them.
They turned to look; the once-still Crystal had now completely deformed, its surface flowing with black liquid material as if some gigantic eye was opening.
"No, this isn't right; it's still mutating!" Chen Rui trembled as he stared at Crystal. "It's not a substance; it's alive!"
"Chen Rui! Get up! We have to go!" Lin Xi pulled him up with all her strength.
However, it seemed that the entity sensed their intentions and emitted a piercing shriek that caused the entire hall to shake violently.
"It's over; this place is going to collapse!" Wang Ya leaned against the wall, her face pale.
"Stick close to me; don't scatter!" Lin Xi gritted her teeth to steady herself while searching for possible escape routes with her peripheral vision.
Just then, a fallen metal panel completely blocked their way out from the entrance, cutting off their escape route entirely.
"We're trapped!" Zhou Zheng shouted anxiously. "Leader Lin, what do we do?!"
Lin Xi clenched her teeth as her gaze swept across the hall. Her eyes landed on a hidden passageway entrance on one side of the wall that caught her attention.
"There's a way over there! Move!" she pointed toward the passage and ordered loudly.
Without hesitation, the team members dashed toward that passage while the liquid tentacles pursued them like ferocious beasts.
The environment inside the passage felt even more oppressive; a strong sulfuric smell permeated the air, reminiscent of some biochemical residue. The walls were covered in strange glowing symbols that resembled an ancient script but emitted an unsettling aura.
"What kind of place is this?" Wang Ya whispered, shining her flashlight ahead, only to discover that the end of the passage was a massive metal door.
"Open the door quickly!" Lin Xi urged. "We need to get out of here as soon as possible!"
Chen Rui crouched down again, starting to work on the lock. His fingers trembled violently, clearly shaken by their recent encounter.
"Calm down, Chen Rui! We need you!" Lin Xi said, giving his shoulder a firm pat to draw his attention.
