As the Shadow Blade Team hurriedly arrived at the temporary base, the series of alarms flashing on the screen immediately captured everyone's attention.
"What’s going on?" Director Zhao asked in a low voice, a hint of fatigue flickering in his eyes, yet he maintained his composure.
Zhang, who was in charge of communications, replied nervously, "Headquarters intercepted a complex encrypted signal from an unknown source. We are currently attempting to decode it."
"An encrypted signal?" Lin Xi frowned slightly. "Could it be from the Dark Current Organization?"
"That’s a strong possibility," Zhang nodded, pulling up the signal waveform. "Its frequency bears some resemblance to the Energy Fluctuation we previously monitored from the Rift Gate. What’s more concerning is that it originated near the ruins after the explosion."
"What?" Zhou Zheng's eyes widened. "Isn’t that place already in ruins?"
Zhang shook his head. "On the surface, yes, but we suspect that the core structure of the Rift Gate hasn’t been completely destroyed. This signal might be emitted from a residual device, or it could even be an attempt to reconstruct itself."
Director Zhao's expression darkened further. "The technology of the Dark Current is more complex than we anticipated. Have we pinpointed the exact source of the signal?"
"The signal is unstable and intermittent," Zhang explained. "However, we have dispatched drones for reconnaissance and should have results soon."
"Time waits for no one," Director Zhao declared decisively. "We need to investigate this ourselves."
An hour later, the Shadow Blade Team re-entered the ruins equipped with advanced technology to quickly locate the source of the signal.
"The Energy Fluctuation here is stronger than before," Chen Rui observed carefully, his brow furrowed as he examined his detection device. There were clear signs of dispersion, as if some kind of network was spreading.
"A network?" Lin Xi felt a chill run down her spine. "Are you saying it’s trying to expand its reach?"
Chen Rui nodded. "Theoretically, yes. The design of the Rift Gate isn’t isolated; it seems to possess some form of self-repair and expansion capability. This means that as long as its core remains intact, it can gradually recover or even create new rifts."
"Then does blowing it up even matter?" Zhou Zheng scoffed, a hint of frustration flashing in his eyes.
"Of course it matters," Director Zhao replied coldly. "At least it prevented further expansion. Our current mission is to locate and completely destroy its core."
The team cautiously advanced through the ruins, low humming sounds echoing around them as if countless machines were operating deep underground.
"These sounds seem almost alive," Zhou Zheng whispered, holding his gun at the ready as he scanned their surroundings. "What exactly is down there?"
"Look!" Lin Xi suddenly pointed ahead.
In the center of the ruins, a twisted blue light flickered like a strange lighthouse, alternating between bright and dim. Surrounding this blue light, the ground was cracked open, revealing deep fissures where mechanical structures could be faintly seen moving.
"That’s where the signal is coming from," Chen Rui confirmed while holding his breath. "But I suggest we don’t get too close. The Energy Field there is extremely unstable and could lead to an accident at any moment."
Director Zhao paused for a moment before finally nodding. "Chen Rui, try to remotely scan for core data and see if there’s any way to interrupt its operation. The rest of you stay alert."
"Understood."
Chen Rui began to calibrate the equipment, tossing a small probe toward the Blue Light Center. The moment the probe made contact with the blue light, the data stream surged wildly.
"My God," Chen Rui whispered in astonishment. "The complexity of this device far exceeds our understanding. It's not just a Rift Gate; it resembles a hub for interdimensional communication."
"A communication hub?" Lin Xi's heart tightened at the thought. "Who is it communicating with?"
"It's still unclear, but it could be something on the other end," Chen Rui replied quickly as he analyzed the data, his complexion growing paler. The signals contained a vast amount of coordinate information, as if it were attempting to navigate something.
"Navigate?" Director Zhao's gaze sharpened. "Are you saying it's guiding something here?"
Chen Rui nodded. "Yes. And it may have already succeeded."
