Ning Caichen and Zhu Fang also made it onto the list, though their rankings were somewhat lower, which did not surprise them. Nie Rong addressed the three of them, saying, "Follow me; I will explain the rules of the Imperial Examination."
Qin Feng and the others were indeed unaware as they entered Nie Rong's room. Changfu's expression was somewhat grave; the Imperial Examination was approaching, and he would soon meet the Emperor. He wondered what the Emperor would do, feeling a wave of anxiety wash over him.
Guan Mama thought of that monster and feared that Chang had underestimated the young master's abilities. "Your Highness, there shouldn’t be any issues; the Emperor in the capital still has to consider your position."
Chang let out a long sigh. "No, during the Imperial Examination, I must..."
Guan Mama gasped in surprise. "Your Highness, won't that provoke him?"
"Hmph, what is there to fear? If he wanted to take action against me, he would have done so already. He dares not," Chang replied confidently.
Guan Mama looked at Chang with concern. The Emperor's temperament had changed recently. She knew she couldn't dissuade him and could only hope that nothing would happen.
In the palace, the old Emperor was with Pu Du Ci Hang. "National Master, is it true that the monster that killed the Eldest Prince is still within the city?" The old Emperor asked solemnly.
Pu Du Ci Hang nodded. "Your Majesty, I tried to intercept him but was thwarted."
"Damn it! Is he deliberately opposing me?" The old Emperor's expression darkened.
"Why didn’t Dragon Qi give a warning? Do you know?"
"Your Majesty, he carries no trace of demonic energy; I don’t know how he managed that," Pu Du Ci Hang replied calmly.
The old Emperor's eyes turned icy. "Even you cannot handle him? It seems this monster is not simple."
Pu Du Ci Hang sighed. "Your Majesty, he is causing chaos in the city; I have no way to perform the blood sacrifice now—just one more time needed."
After saying this, his eyes flickered momentarily.
"Then kill him," the old Emperor commanded coldly.
A wave of imperial authority surged forth, causing Pu Du Ci Hang to retreat two steps without making a sound.
The Emperor was protected by the Dragon Qi, which was why he had no cultivation yet the demons dared not harm him. Pu Du Ci Hang's eyes flashed with pride; I may not be able to kill you, but someone can deal with you.
"Alright, you may go. I will close off another batch of people. Once that demon is slain, you will immediately perform the blood sacrifice," the old Emperor said calmly.
"Yes, Your Majesty," Pu Du Ci Hang replied as he withdrew.
The old Emperor sat quietly, narrowing his eyes. It seemed he would have to visit the forbidden grounds after all. With that thought, he slowly stood up, leaving without any eunuchs and walking alone deeper into the palace.
That day, the Imperial Examination began. Qin Feng and the others arrived early outside the palace. Everything proceeded according to protocol, led in by the eunuchs without any unexpected incidents.
Inside the grand hall, everyone stood in place. Qin Feng was at the front, slightly raising his head. He happened to meet the Emperor's gaze—cold and piercing eyes seemed to be fixed on him.
Qin Feng was momentarily taken aback and looked back at him indifferently. The old Emperor frowned, showing his displeasure. He certainly recognized that the top scholar was Qin Feng, especially since he bore a striking resemblance to Chang, which only soured his mood further.
Suddenly sensing someone watching him, Qin Feng turned to see it was Chang, who was sitting nearby with a bright smile directed at him.
At that moment, a eunuch beside the old Emperor suddenly shouted angrily, "You dare! Kneel! Who allowed you to look around so recklessly?"
Qin Feng turned to look and saw a eunuch pointing at him.
With a loud bang, Chang slammed her hand on the armrest of her chair. "You eunuch! This is not your place to speak! Get lost!"
A flash of light appeared in Chang's hand as a beam shot toward the eunuch's forehead. The eunuch stiffened and collapsed to the ground.
The grand hall fell silent; everyone stared in shock at this scene.
