Zhu Fang revealed a meaningful glance; after all, they were all men, and they understood each other well.
Qin Feng sighed quietly. With Nie Xiaoqian gone, another Xiao Die had appeared. It seemed they were determined to pair Ning Caichen with a female ghost. This guy seemed to have a special connection with female spirits; he just couldn't escape it.
"Ning Brother, aren't you home?" Qin Feng shifted the topic.
Ning Caichen, though anxious, replied, "I was at home, but my mother was worried I would waste time, so she sent me out. She even gave me an IOU from someone who owed my father money. It was just enough for me to travel to the capital for the exam. That person is in Guobei County, so here I am."
Qin Feng understood now; it seemed Ning Caichen had come to collect a debt after all.
"This bookish fellow, you know him? That's great! Hurry and take him away; this guy is seriously ill," Yan Chixia said as he approached, relieved and waving his hand.
Ning Caichen immediately became dissatisfied and turned to Yan Chixia. "You're the one who's sick! Cold-hearted and indifferent, watching others die without helping—what kind of Daoist are you? You must be a fake Daoist!"
Now that he had Qin Feng's assistance, he felt bold enough to mock Yan Chixia.
Yan Chixia glared at him. "You ungrateful fool!"
Ignoring Yan Chixia, Ning Caichen looked earnestly at Qin Feng. "Brother Qin, you'll help me, right?"
Qin Feng smiled and suddenly pointed into the distance. "Isn't that her coming?"
Everyone paused in surprise and turned to look. In the distance, a figure emerged from the white mist—a woman in a white dress was floating toward them, accompanied by a small yellow jar.
Ning Caichen's eyes widened in disbelief as he ran toward her with joy. "Xiao Die! You came out!"
Yan Chixia frowned and moved his fingers slightly. Qin Feng's calm voice reached him. "Daoist Yan, I advise you not to make a move."
Yan Chixia halted and turned to Qin Feng. "Are you putting that scholar in danger? Aren't you two close? Why not just eliminate that female ghost?"
What’s the rush? It’s just a female ghost, easily dealt with. I want to see if this ghost is really as Ning Brother described, Qin Feng said nonchalantly.
Yan Chixia furrowed his brows but didn’t say anything further. Indeed, a female ghost posed little threat; waiting a bit longer wouldn’t hurt.
At that moment, Ning Caichen stood before the female ghost. “Did you escape on your own? Did they follow you?” He asked nervously, glancing behind her.
The female ghost looked at Ning Caichen with surprise. “It was my grandmother who let me go; I don’t even know how it happened.”
She spoke the truth, still in a daze. She had been suddenly called by the Tree Demon, who then gave her the urn and allowed her to leave. She could hardly believe it and thought perhaps the Tree Demon was playing tricks on her. It was only after she truly escaped from Black Mountain and found herself with nowhere to go that she followed Ning Caichen’s aura here.
“Ah, she let you go?” Ning Caichen also found it hard to believe.
Then he regained his composure and excitedly said, “Even if the Tree Demon has some scheme, there’s someone even more powerful here. I’ll take you to meet them.”
With that, he reached out and grabbed the female ghost's hand, leading her toward Qin Feng.
