Yan Qing did not think too much; he walked straight ahead, and just as he was about to reach out to touch something, a sudden force appeared behind him, sending him plummeting from over seventy stories high.
Everything happened too quickly for him to process. He found himself falling gracefully through the air.
A round blue moon hung high above, and a shadow descended rapidly from the rooftop, hurtling down toward the magnificent hundred-meter tall building.
Just when Yan Qing thought he was surely doomed to die from such a fall, he soon spotted a light point descending at the speed of light from the rooftop, heading straight for him.
The light point drew closer, and at a certain moment, Yan Qing finally saw it clearly.
It was Jiang Ming.
At that moment, Jiang Ming had transformed into a four-winged white tiger, plummeting toward him at incredible speed.
"Grab hold of me!"
Hearing Jiang Ming's urgent shout, Yan Qing thought it was futile; from a height of a hundred meters, he would simply become a splatter of flesh and blood upon impact.
Despite his thoughts, the instinct to survive compelled Yan Qing to reach out toward Jiang Ming.
He tilted his head back, his hair flowing in the wind as the tiger's dilated pupils drew nearer. Just as they were parallel to each other, Yan Qing seized the opportunity to place his hand on the tiger's neck, grasping its long mane. With the wind at his back, he managed to sit astride its back.
Feeling Yan Qing's movement, the white tiger let out a roar. Instantly, two pairs of massive white wings unfurled from its sides, lifting them into the air.
As they soared upward against the force of gravity, Yan Qing pressed tightly against the tiger's back, gripping its white mane with all his strength, not daring to loosen his hold.
After a long moment without the expected pain from impact, Yan Qing finally lifted his head from where it had been buried in the tiger's soft fur.
The black night sky and the enormous moon were clearer than he had ever seen them before.
It resembled a painting of the moon.
Looking down, Yan Qing saw a city aglow with neon lights; looking up, he beheld clouds swirling in the sky.
It seemed that only now did Yan Qing notice the wings on the back of the White Tiger. He leaned closer to the tiger's ear and whispered, "What are you doing here?"
The White Tiger let out a long breath, "Hoo..." in response.
The night wind was cold, and Yan Qing buried himself deep in the soft fur of the White Tiger, seeking the last bit of warmth.
"Thank you."
"Huh?"
Jiang Ming did not catch Yan Qing's murmured words.
To avoid being spotted by the crowd, Jiang Ming found another tall building nearby to land on.
Soaring through the sky, he controlled his massive wings and slowly lowered his body.
Yan Qing's feet finally touched the ground, feeling the softness beneath him. He was still surprised. "Thank you for saving me, but how did you end up here?"
Jiang Ming shook his head, his body gradually shrinking back to its original form. He was wearing the Nano Blast Suit that Yan Qing had prepared for him, a specially tailored size after their experiment that could conceal his body before and after transformation.
"I heard you left in the middle of the night. Lin Ran also sent me a message. When I arrived, I just happened to see you fall."
"Is that so?" Yan Qing turned around. The adrenaline from earlier was still surging through him, and he struggled to suppress his discomfort as his voice came out cold and low.
"Yes, Captain."
Sensing Yan Qing's indifferent expression, Jiang Ming felt a bit downcast. He had just saved him; why was there no emotional response at all?
Was the bridge effect not working?
Jiang Ming was about to turn away when Yan Qing spoke up, "Let's head back first. The energy fluctuations from earlier were quite strong; it might have been an Ability User disguising themselves. Now that the energy barrier has shattered, we should go back and check the scene together."
Jiang Ming nodded in response.
By the time the two returned to the scene of the incident, more than ten minutes had passed.
In the distance, the energy barrier lay shattered. It seemed that there was no time for any Ability User to recover; it was merely that some Ability Users had used their Psychic Abilities to obscure their vision.
Noticing the bloodstains on the wall, Yan Qing silently put on gloves from his pocket and began collecting evidence.
Jiang Ming was unsure of what to do, so he followed closely behind Yan Qing, eager to learn something.
As he observed Yan Qing's actions, Jiang Ming also began to pay attention to the peculiarities around them.
Eventually, a glimmer caught his eye. He slowly approached the source of the light and discovered it was a reflective metal badge. Jiang Ming was puzzled as to why this badge was so dazzling.
He picked it up and examined it closely, noticing that the metal circle featured a protruding image of a Cartoon Mermaid, but nothing else seemed particularly special about it.
Meanwhile, Yan Qing had gathered most of the evidence and was about to call Jiang Ming to leave when he noticed the iron piece Jiang Ming held out in front of him. Yan Qing froze in place.
"Deep Sea Sprite."
Yan Qing took the seemingly ordinary piece, reminiscent of a badge collected by elementary school students from anime shows, and unconsciously muttered its name.
He recalled seeing this object just before he fell from the building; however, he hadn’t had a chance to clearly identify it before plummeting. He had even forgotten about it until Jiang Ming found it again.
Jiang Ming was equally surprised. "Deep Sea Sprite? Is that the mysterious organization that has long dominated the Pacific Ocean? They only operate at sea; when did they come inland?"
Yan Qing regained his composure and tightened his grip on the iron piece. "This matter requires immediate reporting back to base." He glanced at the mischievous mermaid cartoon design. "Things have escalated too far."
"Alright, let's head back now."
"Yes."
At nine in the morning, Yan Qing and Jiang Ming were squatting at the door of Lin Ran's office. Yan Qing was holding a bun in his hand and took a big bite, savoring the delicious food while Lin Ran was inside.
Lin Ran raised an eyebrow in confusion. "What's going on? Squatting at the leader's door means you have something to report, or..."
"I have something to tell you," Yan Qing interrupted before Lin Ran could continue guessing.
Realizing that something was off, both Yan Qing and Jiang Ming's expressions darkened. Lin Ran recalled what he had instructed Yan Qing and Jiang Ming about yesterday.
Not daring to delay, Lin Ran opened the door and quickly beckoned Yan Qing and Jiang Ming to come in and sit down.
Once seated, Yan Qing began reporting in a calm voice, "Around 3:45 this morning, I discovered this on the roof of the International Trade Building."
Yan Qing placed a Mermaid Badge, adorned with a Cartoon Mermaid design, in front of Lin Ran.
As the Mermaid Badge appeared before him, Lin Ran's expression changed. He shifted from a playful demeanor to a serious one as he looked at Yan Qing and Jiang Ming. "Are you sure?"
Both Yan Qing and Jiang Ming nodded simultaneously.
Lin Ran's heart sank; it seemed that the organization from the Pacific Ocean had already infiltrated their Z City.
After some further conversation with Yan Qing and Jiang Ming, Lin Ran assured them that they could focus on their exams without worry. For the safety of Z City, he would temporarily recall two A Rank Ability Users to assist him.
Seeing how much Lin Ran valued their exams, Yan Qing nodded helplessly. This exam was equally important for him.
