With her index and middle fingers resting on Tao Yiran's forehead, Jiang Wenyu's eyes were filled with reluctance. Yet, she still activated her Psychic Ability, channeling the green light through her arm and into his body.
"May you forget me in the future, find a good partner, and live in peace year after year. Mr. Tao, we are fated to meet but not to be together in this life."
The morning sunlight streamed through the hospital window, casting dappled patterns on the bed.
Tao Zhe had been hospitalized for several days due to a perforated stomach, and at that moment, he was still in a hazy sleep.
Suddenly, he felt as if something was blocking his view; the light before him was obscured by a shadow. His eyes rolled under his eyelids, and he slept restlessly.
Sensing something unusual, Tao Zhe slowly opened his eyes.
As soon as he did, it felt as though he had been struck by lightning; his drowsiness vanished without a trace.
Before him stood a woman in a qipao of deep blue, elegantly poised at his bedside.
The qipao was tailored perfectly to fit her graceful figure, the delicate silk fabric shimmering softly in the sunlight like a flowing ink painting.
Her features were exquisitely carved, resembling polished jade, with fair skin that seemed almost fragile to the touch.
Her eyebrows arched like crescent moons, and her eyes held a hint of emotion that seemed capable of captivating anyone who met her gaze. The slight upward curve of her lips bore an elusive smile, reminiscent of a gentle spring breeze—warm and intoxicating.
Her hair was styled high in an elegant bun, with a few strands casually falling by her ears, adding an air of charm and nonchalance.
A jade hairpin was slanted into her bun, swaying gently with her movements and glimmering with a mysterious light.
Tao Zhe widened his eyes. Was this how things were going to start so early in the morning?
Tao Zhe sat up, and the woman noticed his difficulty in moving. She stepped forward to support his arm, helping him sit more comfortably.
Tao Zhe's eyes widened as he stared at the beautiful woman who had suddenly appeared in his hospital room, completely oblivious to the presence of Yan Qing and the others nearby.
Yan Qing clenched his fists and brought them to his mouth, clearing his throat. "Ahem."
Realizing there were other voices, Tao Zhe snapped back to reality and turned to look at them.
"Have you dealt with it?" Tao Zhe asked Yan Qing.
Yan Qing took a couple of steps forward, positioning himself beside Jiang Wenyu to block the kind gaze Jiang Wenyu was directing at Tao Zhe.
"It's all taken care of."
Tao Zhe raised an eyebrow in confusion at Yan Qing and waved for him to move aside. "Hey, you're blocking my view."
Yanhua, unable to contain herself, turned around with a lollipop in her mouth.
This scene was too beautiful for her to watch.
Damn it, the box and ribbons had left so eagerly, leaving her and Brother Ting Yu to take this B-Class Esper back to the base for a report.
What a lazy little couple.
"Uh, Mr. Tao, this is the... thing you need to deal with," Yan Qing said, weighing her words before finally uttering the last two.
"What did you say?" Tao Zhe fumbled to put on his glasses, a frown forming on his face. "You expect me to take responsibility for a living person? Is this how you usually handle things?"
Yan Qing remained composed, pulling out a document and stepping aside to reveal Jiang Wenyu behind her. "Mr. Tao, the one causing disturbances in your ancestral home is this young lady. Of course, there are no ghosts in this world; she is a Plant Esper. Due to previous damage to her crystal, she lost her memory and has been staying at your place for recovery. So, we can now resolve the Psychic Ability incident you entrusted us with."
Tao Zhe's expression darkened further as he realized that this stunning beauty was not sent by his partner.
Seeing the woman smile gently at him, Tao Zhe rubbed his forehead. "Fine, fine, bring her over, and I'll sign."
After signing the document, Yan Qing nodded at Tao Zhe and turned to leave.
Smoke followed behind as they walked out of the hospital room.
Jiang Wenyu's demeanor was calm as she reached out to touch Tao Zhe's face lightly with the back of her hand. "You and he share some resemblance."
With that remark, Jiang Wenyu gracefully stepped back and departed.
Tao Zhe was left speechless. What was going on? It was too early in the morning for this kind of disturbance.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he became, especially recalling the woman's strange behavior in her qipao. He dialed the hospital's direct line to the nurses' station. "Hello? What’s going on? A bunch of people just barged into my VIP room without any notice—can't you..."
“Are you back?”
Jiang Ming, holding a spatula, peeked out of the kitchen to glance at Yan Qing.
“Yeah, the business trip is over. I probably won’t be assigned any work for the next few weeks.”
Wearing an apron, Jiang Ming placed a pot of hot soup on the dining table. “That’s great! You can finally take a good break.”
Yan Qing shook his head. “Not necessarily. Our boss loves to make us work overtime. I’m still far from resting.”
As he spoke, Yan Qing picked up a pair of chopsticks nearby and effortlessly grabbed a piece of meat, popping it into his mouth and chewing with a satisfied sigh.
“This is really good! You’ve improved so much in just a few days.”
Jiang Ming smiled. “I had some free time, so I practiced a bit. These are the only dishes I can manage.”
“Oh, that’s not bad at all! Unlike me, who can’t cook at all and is still mooching off you.”
Jiang Ming replied, “With this little food, feel free to eat as much as you want. It’s not like it’s free; I can’t finish what I cook myself, and I need you here!”
“Is that so? Then I won’t hold back.”
Yan Qing’s pace quickened as he ate, while Jiang Ming sat beside him, watching him devour half a bowl of rice with a smile on his face, resting his chin on his hand.
"Why are you staring at me? Just eat."
"Uh, okay."
Careless Yan Qing didn't notice at first that there were two sets of chopsticks neatly placed on the dining table.
"Great! The level of the captured Ability User has been reclassified as A Rank."
His boss, Yan Qing, who always made him work overtime, handed him the documents and excitedly pointed at the information about Jiang Wenyu.
"Did you know? This is an A-Class Esper! You four managed to capture him despite the rank difference, and the headquarters has already distributed the rewards. Your promotion exam has been moved up to next week. You need to seize this opportunity! If you succeed in your promotion, our research institute will have four A-rank members. With one more A Rank, we can form a special team qualified to participate in the capture of S Rank and above Ability Users!"
As he spoke, Lin Ran became increasingly animated, spitting as he talked.
"Okay, okay, I understand. I'll make time to prepare for this promotion. You don't need to worry too much."
Lin Ran replied, "Comrade Yan Qing, I'm glad to see your awareness. For the honor of our institute, I've decided to give you a day off with pay. Take a good rest today, and make sure to succeed in your promotion next week!"
Yan Qing's eyes widened in disbelief. Wait, Lin Ran actually gave him a day off?!
