The lingering warmth of September gradually faded, giving way to the sudden chill of October's deep autumn rains, which brought an unexpected coolness.
As nightfall approached, the entire city was enveloped in the crispness of the cold dew.
At the Z Zone Research Institute.
“Senior, my boyfriend has asked me out today, so I won’t be able to stay up late with you,” Zhao Xue'er said apologetically, dressed in a pristine white lab coat. “You should head home early too; it seems like it’s going to rain tonight.”
Before she could finish her sentence, her phone chimed with a notification. Zhao Xue'er glanced at it and exclaimed, “Oh no! Li Zhou is messaging me again. I’m really sorry; I have to go now. Bye-bye, Senior!”
“Alright, take care,” Yan Qing replied.
After receiving Yan Qing's response, Zhao Xue'er bounced away like a cheerful little rabbit, quickly shedding her lab coat and tossing it onto a nearby cabinet before grabbing her bag and darting off.
In the blink of an eye, she vanished without a trace.
The spacious laboratory was left with only Yan Qing.
Suddenly, Zhao Xue'er reappeared, leaning against the door with a playful smile. “Senior, I’ll treat you to milk tea in a few days. Sorry about today!”
Yan Qing turned around and smiled back at her, nodding slightly. Seeing this, Zhao Xue'er finally left for good.
From two in the afternoon until ten at night, after numerous centrifugation processes, Yan Qing had finally extracted a small amount of visibly white substance. A rare and radiant smile spread across his face after days of hard work.
He carefully placed the white substance into a cold storage test tube and gently closed the door of the refrigeration unit.
Stretching his arms and rubbing his sore muscles, Yan Qing couldn’t help but let a smile tug at the corners of his mouth. All the diligent effort over this past month had finally paid off; he had achieved some results.
Yan Qing looked up at the sky, which had long since turned as dark as ink, and murmured to himself, "It's getting late."
After changing his clothes and turning off the lights, Yan Qing left the eerily quiet place behind.
He rented a small house near the research institute, but it had excellent lighting. Every morning, if he had the time, he would cuddle with his mischievous cat and enjoy a warm sunbath together.
Perhaps it was only during these moments that Dudu would be particularly docile, not clawing or biting at him.
On his way home, there was a grove of sycamore trees. From a distance, the beautiful scenery always lifted his spirits.
Everywhere was filled with the romantic sight of French Sycamore leaves fluttering down, and in the moonlight, the leaves swayed gracefully. Occasionally, he could hear the rustling sound of leaves entwined with the wind.
The tall sycamore trees lined both sides of the road. Every time he passed through here, Yan Qing felt an illusion that the road ahead had no end.
Tonight, a light rain began to fall. The sycamore-lined path in the hazy drizzle resembled a poetic ink wash painting. The gentle raindrops fell on Yan Qing's forehead, shoulders, back, and legs, soaking his clothes.
Feeling the chill of the rain, Yan Qing suddenly snapped back to reality and quickened his pace.
As the rain grew heavier, Yan Qing decided to take long strides and started to run. Before long, he reached the corner where the road ended.
As usual, he stopped by the convenience store downstairs and bought his favorite flavor of instant noodles. After hesitating for a moment in front of the shelf, he grabbed two sticks of ham as well.
Just as he reached the door and was about to push it open, Yan Qing heard his cat master inside scratching and meowing insistently, sounding anxious.
Well, it was all his fault.
After all, who told him to come back so late?
As Yan Qing was about to pull out the keys from his back pocket, a sudden light illuminated in front of him.
The door opened.
Yan Qing quickly looked up, and what met his eyes was a young man with fair skin. Perhaps it was the proximity that made Yan Qing's mind race with a single thought—what beautiful skin he has.
Seeing Yan Qing staring at him intently, the man awkwardly spoke up, "Hi, hello, my name is Jiang Ming. I just moved in today, so we'll be roommates from now on."
There was a hint of nervousness in the man's eyes as he awkwardly extended his right hand.
Yan Qing remained silent.
Instead of reciprocating the gesture, Yan Qing glanced at the Cat Master standing behind the man and said coolly, "Could you let me in first?"
The man seemed even more embarrassed, mechanically retracting his hand and stammering, "Uh... sure."
He then stepped aside to allow Yan Qing to enter.
Yan Qing walked past the Cat Master into the room and noticed that the living room had hardly changed; in fact, it seemed even tidier than before.
However, he was still somewhat dazed by the sudden appearance of this new roommate.
Although the landlord had mentioned that new roommates would be moving in over the next few days, it felt astonishing how quickly this person had settled in.
As soon as Yan Qing opened his phone, he saw a barrage of missed calls from the enthusiastic Landlady Auntie—18 in total. After a brief pause, he opened WeChat and found a message from her.
"Xiao Yan, since you didn't answer your phone, Auntie just wanted to let you know that your roommate has been found. He's a nice young man with a good character, so you can rest assured. By the way, he's moving in these days; I wanted to give you a heads-up so you wouldn't be startled. That's all for now; remember to get along well. If there's anything, just come find Auntie."
Seeing the last few caring words from the Landlady Auntie, Yan Qing couldn't help but smile. The aunt was as warm and enthusiastic as ever.
Jiang Ming noticed Yan Qing laughing at the long green dialogue box and couldn't help but ask, "Who is it?"
"Hmm?" His voice was too soft for Yan Qing to hear clearly. She put away her phone and looked at Jiang Ming. "What did you say?"
Jiang Ming shook his head and replied, "Nothing."
Yan Qing didn't want to pry too much into his affairs, but some things needed to be clarified. Just as she settled onto the sofa, she noticed Cat Master, who had been tugging at her pant leg earlier, now curled up comfortably on her designated spot on the couch.
"Have a seat," Yan Qing said, patting the space beside her.
After receiving Yan Qing's gesture, Jiang Ming sat down next to her.
"Now that we're living together, we need to establish some ground rules. First, please don't leave your personal belongings lying around. You can keep your toiletries in the bathroom, but don’t mix them up; second, there’s only one kitchen, which I rarely use, so please remember to clean up after cooking; third, the balcony is shared, so don’t clutter it with plants or other items—let’s each hang half of our clothes."
Yan Qing poured herself a cup of water slowly and took a small sip. "If you have any other concerns, feel free to bring them up. We can discuss them together."
Jiang Ming smiled as he poured himself a cup of water as well and said slowly, "I have no issues. But what about that?"
He pointed thoughtfully at Cat Master, who was nestled on the sofa like a little mound of fur.
