When Fei Liuli lifted her head again, all she could see was Xiao Shaojin's receding figure and the disdainful voice that echoed in her ears: "My instruction is for you to take care of Miss Tian Shu. If she loses even a single hair, you know the consequences."
He emphasized the word "Miss," and ever since Ma Tianshu left, hearing those two words would send him into a rage.
"Yes," Fei Liuli replied, her voice tinged with a hint of tears, but that person would never hear her.
Why have I changed? Have I really changed?
Xiao Shaojin spent his first night in three years without Fei Liuli by his side.
Like when he was a child, he gently coaxed Ma Tianshu to sleep.
This silly girl had finally returned to him. Although she always regarded him as an older brother, Xiao Shaojin thought that one day he would win her over, making her wholly his.
He smiled down at the sleeping face in his arms, but suddenly felt a jolt in his heart as a familiar face uncontrollably flashed through his mind, refusing to fade away.
He recalled what happened at the banquet; at the moment he picked up Ma Tianshu, he could see the sadness and loneliness in Fei Liuli's eyes—something even an idiot could notice.
He remembered just before he left, Chairman had quietly told him, "Be good to Liuli."
He had intended to comfort Fei Liuli; after all, this sentimental girl must have been overthinking again. But for some reason, hearing her indifferent tone ignited a surge of inexplicable anger within him, leading to their unresolved argument.
Xiao Shaojin shook his head vigorously, trying to rid himself of that unwelcome shadow: "Damn it, why am I still thinking about explaining things to her?"
He instinctively tightened his grip around Tian Shu's arm, trying hard to shake off the shadow that loomed over him, and closed his eyes heavily.
The next morning.
“Liuli, wait a moment, I’ll go wake that lazy bum up... Ouch!”
Like a little cannonball, Ma Tianshu rushed out the door and collided head-on with Xiao Shaojin, who was walking in.
Rubbing her sore head, she wore an expression of deep grievance and pouted, “Honestly, you could at least say something when you get up. That really hurt.”
Xiao Shaojin was momentarily dazed by the impact but quickly regained his composure. He gently rubbed her head and asked with a smile, “What do you need me for?”
“Nothing much. Liuli made breakfast herself, it smells so good! I wanted to invite you to eat together.”
Ma Tianshu’s big eyes sparkled like two lively black gems as she gazed at Xiao Shaojin. Then, like a joyful little deer, she bounced over to Fei Liuli, who was tidying up the dishes. “Brother Shao Jin, are you really willing to give Liuli to me?”
“Wha... What?” Xiao Shaojin was completely bewildered. He remembered only asking someone to take care of Ma Tianshu for a while. Who told her that he wanted to give Fei Liuli to her?
Ma Tianshu seemed to sense his confusion and grabbed Fei Liuli's arm with a mysterious smile on her face. “Liuli told me herself, Brother Shao Jin. If you’re willing, then I really won’t return her!”
“Miss Tian Shu, I’m just here to serve you. Please don’t misunderstand; the young master only asked me to be your attendant,” Fei Liuli clarified early on, having noticed the strange look in Ma Tianshu's eyes. She wanted to set things straight and avoid any unnecessary complications.
Ma Tianshu fell silent, but beside her, Xiao Shaojin suddenly turned cold, his tone laced with impatience. "Tian Shu, it's just a servant. You can treat them however you like; there's nothing to be attached to. I'm going to the Chairman's place for the Advisory Meeting, so I'm not eating." With that, he turned on his heel and strode away, his footsteps hurried and seemingly filled with anger.
Watching Xiao Shaojin leave with such a sudden change in demeanor, Ma Tianshu silently cursed him in her heart. "Deny it all you want; with that foul temper of yours, you'll regret it later."
In truth, perhaps she was the only one who truly understood that three years ago, the big brother who would only gaze at her and pamper her had long since planted another person deep in his heart—someone who could even call out "Liuli" in his dreams.
Meanwhile, Xiao Shaojin was consumed by Fei Liuli's words, unable to shake off his anger. He was still caught up in a whirlwind of frustration.
"Tian Shu only asked a question; was it really necessary to rush to distance himself?"
The more he thought about it, the more infuriated he became. Ever since Tian Shu returned, many things had slipped out of his control, and that feeling left him thoroughly dissatisfied.
Upon reflection, the only thing he truly could not control was Fei Liuli herself.
