Nie Xi tightly embraced Yun Zhi Yue, responding in a muffled voice that sounded incredibly obedient. However, the emotions hidden deep within her chest were invisible to anyone else. It was clear that the urgency from the capital was palpable; Nie Zhui's decision to leave Yuan Cheng came just a day later.
Yuan Cheng was not far from the capital, and this time they planned to drive there. Nie Zhui had thoughtfully prepared a long, stylish luxury car, claiming it was for them to get familiar with each other. In reality, once the driver closed the partition, the atmosphere in the back seat became remarkably quiet.
Nie Xi's complexion was rosy, and she had gained a little weight, no longer appearing as frail as before. That night, she had promised not to bother her, and now she clung to her like strong adhesive, wrapping her arms around Yun Zhi Yue's waist and resting her shoulder against her. As soon as they got into the car, she closed her eyes and seemed ready to sleep, showing no intention of greeting their father.
Yue Shi was accustomed to this scene, engrossed in some documents and completely indifferent to what others were thinking. Nie Zhui kept staring at Yun Zhi Yue, trying to communicate through his gaze, but Yun Zhi Yue pretended not to understand.
Nie Langyuan rubbed his forehead, unable to bear the silence any longer: "We've set off; shouldn't we be missing someone? Is Yun Shijiu not coming to the capital?" He had gotten into another car on the way for some other business.
Nie Langyuan was surprised: "He left early? Is he going to meet us halfway?"
Yun Zhi Yue mumbled in response: "I guess so."
What did "I guess so" mean? The three siblings were acting mysteriously, making it hard for anyone to feel at ease. Yet Brother He seemed eager to stir things up.
"Brother, is it really okay for us to part ways with Ru Jiao?"
Nie Zhui dismissed it casually: "If we don't part ways and sit together, would you stay put?"
Nie Langyuan fell silent; indeed, if Feng Rujiao were in the car, this journey would be much more unbearable than it currently was.
After about forty minutes of driving, Nie Zhui's phone suddenly rang. Perhaps it was too quiet in the car because when he answered, a woman's voice came through clearly.
"Did you leave without someone in your car just ten minutes after setting off?"
Yun Zhi Yue raised an eyebrow; it seemed Shijiu had been lurking around Feng Rujiao. He was never one to let things go easily. She had promised Jie Yizhi that she would clear out anything that shouldn't exist in this dimension in exchange for freedom; her good little brother volunteered for battle.
Feng Rujiao wasn't easy to deal with, but at least anyone daring enough to come play assassination games at their home would be crushed without hesitation.
Seeing that Nie Zhui remained silent, Yun Zhi Yue nudged his knee gently, signaling him to speak up.
Nie Zhui glanced at Yun Zhi Yue and said, "Yun Shijiu is missing."
Silence fell on the other end of the phone, followed by the harsh sounds of screeching brakes and a collision.
Nie Langyuan gasped, quickly snatching the phone and putting it on speaker. "Ru Jiao! Are you okay? What happened?"
Feng Rujiao's voice was steady. "It's nothing much. The driver of the car in front died; it was a chain collision. I'm in another vehicle, so I'm fine."
Nie Langyuan was puzzled. "How did the driver die?"
"Ask Yun Zhi Yue," she replied. "I need to get out and handle this. You all should head back."
The call ended, and facing Nie Langyuan's astonished gaze, Yun Zhi Yue looked aggrieved. "You believe everything she says. Do you believe me if I say I'm the president?"
Before Nie Langyuan could respond, their vehicle came to a sudden stop as well.
