Yun Fu never expected that while Yue Xiang appeared to agree on the surface, behind the scenes, things were much more ruthless. It was only when Yun Fu was nearly hit by a car that he realized everything had already been set in motion.
Determined, he booked a flight back to his home country, just as he had done years ago, bringing only enough money for the ticket and leaving everything else behind for Yue Xiang. After that, Yun Fu took over the Yun Family business and ceased all contact with Yue Xiang. He only heard rumors that Yue Xiang's temperament had changed drastically, completely unleashing himself.
He became ruthless and merciless; his business grew larger, and so did his enemies.
In high school, after many years, Yue Xiang contacted me for the first time, saying he had offended a powerful figure and feared for his life. He asked me to take care of Yue Tong. As for your Uncle Yue, your father felt a deep sense of guilt, always thinking that if he could have persuaded him back then, everything might have turned out differently.
Later on, your Uncle Yue passed away. It was the day Yue Tong saved you when I received the news that your Uncle Yue was not going to make it. Yue Tong insisted on going back home; I couldn’t let the child miss seeing his father one last time, so I arranged for someone to take him there.
Yun Zhi Yue knew all about what happened afterward. It was indeed a heart-stopping experience, but she always felt there was something Yun Fu hadn’t disclosed.
Tentatively, she asked, “Dad, you’re not hiding anything from me, are you?”
Yun Fu’s fingers tightened around his teacup for a moment before he smiled and replied, “What could I possibly hide from you? You’re such a suspicious child.”
“You’re just like your mother,” he continued. “When she was young, she would investigate everything about me; there wasn’t a single secretary’s phone number she didn’t know.”
Yun Zhi Yue chuckled and decided not to pursue the topic any further. As for the shares Yun Fu refused to give her, she trusted that he wouldn’t deceive her.
Her suspicions about being an illegitimate child were completely dispelled afterward, and her attitude toward Yue Tong returned to normal. After that, Yue Tong often invited her out; their interactions as friends were perfectly normal. Given her father's guilt regarding the situation, there was no reason to refuse.
However, amidst their outings, there would often be an unwelcome third wheel joining them unexpectedly. She couldn’t help but wonder if Nan Jing had installed a tracking device on her; he always seemed to find her with pinpoint accuracy.
Each time, Yue Tong would joke and smile before quietly stepping aside to give them space. This clingy behavior left Yun Zhi Yue feeling quite exasperated.
Glancing sideways at Nan Jing beside her, she deliberately provoked him by asking, “I haven’t seen Yu Ge in a while; where is he?”
Without missing a beat, Nan Jing replied calmly, “The Zhou family has a collaborative project with the Nan Family. Zhou Yu left the capital to oversee it.”
Yun Zhi Yue raised an eyebrow. “What kind of project is worth Zhou Da Zi personally supervising? Are you sure it’s not someone using their power for personal gain and getting rid of others?”
“Why even ask?” Nan Jing admitted with complete composure.
Yun Zhi Yue rested her chin on her hand, glancing sideways as she looked Nan Jing up and down. "Do you know that your behavior is crossing the line? Our relationship is defined as Childhood Sweethearts, do you understand?"
Taking a sip from her glass, she pressed her hand against the back of his head and kissed him, forcing the warm liquid into her mouth.
Yun Zhi Yue pushed him away, coughing a couple of times after swallowing, her face flushed with anger and embarrassment as she opened her mouth to speak.
Nan Jing teased, "It's about being there for each other in every way as Childhood Sweethearts."
Yun Zhi Yue's face immediately turned crimson, like a ripe fruit waiting to be picked. The phrase "being there for each other in every way" successfully triggered certain thoughts in her mind.
So much so that when Nan Jing's gaze changed and he pressed her into the backseat of his black car in the parking lot, she was completely bewildered.
