Nan Jing smirked and leaned down again, wrapping her arms around Yun Zhi Yue to check on her progress at work. Her teasing voice whispered in Yun Zhi Yue's ear, "Not bad, let’s eat first."
Yun Zhi Yue replied sarcastically, "Nan Zong, are you satisfied now that you see I can eat?"
Nan Jing's gaze shifted from the computer to follow the warmth radiating from Yun Zhi Yue's neck.
Dan Feng's eyes darkened with intensity. "Yes, very satisfied."
Feeling the heat of that gaze traveling down into her collar, Yun Zhi Yue cursed inwardly at the boldness. She feigned panic, quickly moving her chair away to distance herself from Nan Jing, pretending she was just focused on her meal.
The lunchbox was beautifully packed with three dishes and a soup, all from her favorite restaurant. As she took small bites, Nan Jing stood beside her watching, completely different from the workaholic she usually was in the office.
It wasn't until Yun Zhi Yue felt her ears burning from being scrutinized that Nan Jing finally returned to her desk with a knowing smile.
As the afternoon workday ended, both women appeared at the entrance simultaneously. Behind them, employees exchanged glances and whispers, clearly excited as if they had already indulged in the sweet gossip of their childhood sweethearts.
It had always been like this; Yun Zhi Yue used to act indifferent and even found it amusing. But today, she hesitated for a moment, avoiding walking side by side with Nan Jing.
Without turning back, Nan Jing reached out and pulled her into an embrace.
Hearing the gasps behind them, Yun Zhi Yue snapped, "What are you doing?"
"You don't really like me hugging you; I’ll respect that from now on."
"You know I was just joking."
"You know I don’t joke around; you took it seriously."
Unable to break free, Yun Zhi Yue lowered her head and maintained that position as they left the company.
Once outside, she suddenly said, "Nan Jing, I want to go home."
Nan Jing stopped in her tracks and looked down at her.
"Sis, what are you doing? This is just a subtle way of rejecting me. I told you to pursue him; why are you playing around?"
"Shi Ge, have you ever been in a relationship? If I show any feelings for him now, it might actually make it harder for me to pursue him."
"Why is that?"
With a scoff, Nan Jing replied, "Everyone in this world is the same. If things come too easily, they won't be cherished. I put in the effort for the first half, and now it's your turn to step up in the second half. Only then can we maximize our progress."
Reincarnation Stone asked with curiosity, "I've always wondered, what were you doing before you fell into the underworld?"
A shadow crossed Yun Zhi Yue's eyes, but she remained silent. It was a painful memory; just one experience was enough. The day she was cast into the underworld would forever be etched in her mind.
Nan Jing lifted her chin, not explaining his recent odd behavior and even avoiding the topic altogether, which made Yun Zhi Yue feel uncomfortable and want to retreat.
"You were in a car accident and lost consciousness, but it seems like you're fine. The diagnosis showed a mild concussion. What if something happens at home? How will you explain it to Aunt Lan?"
"Zhou Yu has been busy lately. The results for Sun Xiaoyue will be sent to me. Don't you want to know?"
A flicker of hesitation crossed Yun Zhi Yue's eyes. "Maybe I should contact Yu Ge separately. You handle your business."
Nan Jing chuckled in disbelief and pushed her into the car.
"Don't even think about it. If you've decided to focus, then avoid contacting him. Do you understand?"
Startled by Nan Jing's authoritative tone, Yun Zhi Yue instinctively nodded. "I understand."
As Nan Jing got into the car, he gently rubbed her cheek. "Good."
