At that moment, Xiao Lei and Sister-in-law Zhao Lihong both felt a blush creeping onto their faces, as they were aware of each other's secrets. Zhao Lihong, being ten years older and having more experience, turned to Xiao Lei and said, "From now on, we’re all family, so don’t worry about it." She noticed Xiao Lei's nervousness and tried to reassure her.
Xiao Lei blushed and replied, "Yeah, yeah," unsure of what else to say.
Zhen Yujuan had already heard their voices from outside and was startled to realize that her son and daughter-in-law had returned. She hesitated to come out, feeling a whirlwind of emotions. They all knew about her relationship with Xiao Lei, which made things quite awkward. What should she do?
Jin Liang entered the kitchen and saw his mother lost in thought. He called out, "Mom, what are you thinking? The vegetables are almost burning!"
Zhen Yujuan snapped back to reality, quickly adding some water to the pot while blushing. "You’re back," she said.
"Yeah, Mom. Did Xiao Lei tell you everything?" Jin Liang asked eagerly.
Zhen Yujuan's face turned bright red as she softly replied, "Yes."
"That's good. From now on, let's not worry about it. You don’t need to feel embarrassed; only the four of us know about this," he reassured her. Jin Liang spoke frankly because he had seen his mother and Xiao Lei earlier that morning.
Seeing her son so open-minded made Zhen Yujuan feel a bit relieved. Blushing, she asked Jin Liang, "You won’t laugh at me, will you?"
"Of course not! Don’t worry; while Dad and your brother aren’t around, Sister-in-law and I will take good care of you," Jin Liang said earnestly.
"Okay then, let’s go eat," Zhen Yujuan said with a flushed face.
As they walked to the dining area, they heard Zhao Lihong call out, "Mom, what delicious food did you make today?"
Zhen Yujuan blushed and said softly, "There's nothing special to eat, just an extra plate of meat."
Upon hearing this, Zhao Lihong laughed and said, "Is that extra plate of meat for your little lover?"
Zhen Yujuan's face turned red again as she looked up and replied, "It's for your little lover!"
Everyone burst into laughter, and the tense atmosphere lightened considerably as they began to chat and joke.
"Li Hong, where's your son?" Zhen Yujuan suddenly noticed her grandson was missing and asked.
"Oh, his grandmother is taking him for a few days, so I just left him there," Zhao Lihong replied.
"Come on, everyone sit down and eat," Jin Liang said happily. He spoke while sitting next to Sister-in-law. In rural dining customs, seating arrangements are quite important; the younger generation must sit in the lower position, which is at the foot of the table. The upper position is reserved for the elders.
Thus, Zhen Yujuan took her seat at the upper position across from them. Xiao Lei was unsure where to sit and stood still. Jin Liang noticed and quickly said, "Xiao Lei, why don't you sit with my mom?"
Xiao Lei hurriedly replied, "If I sit with her, won't I be considered one of the elders?"
Zhao Lihong chuckled, "Yes, today you are one of the elders because you are married to my mother-in-law!"
Upon hearing this, Zhen Yujuan felt embarrassed and shot a glare at her daughter-in-law. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
Jin Liang laughed heartily as well. "Yes, yes! You are indeed married! Xiao Lei, hurry up and sit next to my mom!"
Zhen Yujuan's face turned crimson as she lowered her head, falling silent.
Xiao Lei, noticing her embarrassment, quickly sat down beside her and said with a blush, "I'm sorry, I'll just act like an elder today."
Seeing Xiao Lei genuinely sitting next to her, Zhen Yujuan shot him a glare and discreetly pinched his thigh, conveying her feelings of shame for having him so close.
Once everyone was settled, Jin Liang spoke up, "Today marks the reunion of our two pairs of faux couples. Let's celebrate with some drinks!" He poured a glass of wine for each person as he spoke.
"Wait, wait! What do you mean by 'faux couples' and 'reunion'?" Xiao Lei asked, confused by Jin Liang's words.
Zhen Yujuan and Zhao Lihong also didn't understand what was being said. They looked at Jin Liang, waiting for his explanation after Xiao Lei's question.
"You guys are really clueless! Faux couples refer to my dad and older brother coming back; we’re going to be separated now. 'Reunion' means that we used to keep things secretive, but now it's all out in the open among the four of us. No more hiding, right? Isn't that a reunion?" Jin Liang explained, his academic background not being very strong but still managing to articulate his thoughts in a somewhat coherent manner.
