"I am you, and you are me." The voice of Chu Sheng echoed in his ears as he suddenly opened his eyes, finding himself lying in bed, his forehead drenched in cold sweat.
Outside the window, the morning light was faintly breaking through the sheer curtains, casting mottled shadows on the floor. The chirping of birds came from afar, crisp and pleasant, yet it could not dispel the unease in Chu Sheng's heart.
"So it was just a dream." Chu Sheng let out a long sigh, slowly sitting up and rubbing his throbbing temples. Everything from last night after obtaining the Merit Book felt as if it were still vivid before him—the miraculous scenes and the mysterious illusions left him with lingering fears. He even began to doubt whether he was still dreaming.
Instinctively, he raised his hand and swiped in front of him, causing the translucent Merit Interface to appear. A soft blue light flickered before his eyes: "Merit Points: 1." The clear number confirmed that the Merit Points he gained from supporting uncle Li last night were not an illusion.
"System, how do I use these Merit Points? What good things can I exchange for?" Chu Sheng silently pondered, a hint of anticipation in his tone.
"Ding! Merit Points can be used to enhance attributes such as strength, speed, and constitution at a 1:1 exchange rate." The mechanical voice sounded at the right moment, cold and devoid of emotion.
Chu Sheng's eyes lit up with excitement as if he had discovered a new world. Just as he was about to try something out, a familiar voice from outside called out, "Young Master, it's time to get up; breakfast is ready."
"Coming!" Chu Sheng responded quickly, hastily getting dressed as the anticipation within him bubbled like a volcano ready to erupt. He opened the door to be greeted by the enticing aroma of food. uncle Li stood in the yard, holding a steaming plate of breakfast.
" uncle Li, let me help you with that," Chu Sheng said eagerly as he hurried to uncle Li's side.
uncle Li quickly waved his hands with a smile on his face. "No need for that! You are precious, Young Master; how can I let you do such rough work?"
" uncle Li, you've taken care of me for fifteen years; it's time I did something for you," Chu Sheng insisted, taking the plate from uncle Li's hands without waiting for a response.
"Ding! Kind action detected; gained +1 Merit Point." The system's prompt chimed in at just the right moment, clear and pleasant.
Chu Sheng felt a surge of joy in his heart, a slight smile creeping onto his lips, but it quickly froze on his face. It dawned on him that he had no idea how to cook! From childhood, he had been pampered, with everything done for him—how could he possibly handle such household chores?
The oil in the pan sizzled and released wisps of blue smoke as Chu Sheng clumsily poured in the vegetables, only to splatter himself with hot oil, causing him to grimace in pain.
uncle Li watched from the side, shaking his head but unable to suppress a chuckle. "Young Master, why don't you take a break? I can handle this."
"No, I must learn!" Chu Sheng gritted his teeth, stubbornly persisting. Although he was all thumbs, under uncle Li's patient guidance, he managed to produce a plate of stir-fried vegetables that were only half-cooked.
"Ding! Persistence rewarded: +1 Merit Points." The system notification chimed again, as if affirming Chu Sheng's efforts.
After breakfast, Chu Sheng found an excuse and headed alone to the empty space in the backyard. This was where he usually practiced martial arts, surrounded by lush bamboo. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, and scattered around were several irregularly shaped boulders that seemed like fossils left behind by ancient beasts.
"Three points of merit; let’s see how effective this is." Chu Sheng took a deep breath to calm his excited heart and silently chanted, "Use them all to enhance my strength!"
In an instant, a warm current surged from his dantian, flowing like a gentle stream through his meridians. He felt an overwhelming surge of power coursing through him, as if every cell in his body was rejoicing with vitality.
"Has my strength increased this much?" Chu Sheng clenched his fists, feeling the surging power within him and filled with astonishment. His gaze locked onto a boulder nearly as tall as himself. Taking a deep breath, he swung his fist with all his might.
"Bang!" A loud crash echoed as the stone shattered upon impact. Spiderweb-like cracks spread from where his fist connected before it broke into several pieces. Chu Sheng stared at his fist in disbelief; this power exceeded all his expectations!
Just then, a sudden and intense headache struck him like a thousand steel needles piercing into his brain. Chu Sheng groaned in agony, clutching his head as flashes of unfamiliar and bloody scenes raced before his eyes: gunfire in the darkness, blood splattering, and the terrified gaze of a target just before they fell... These fragmented memories sliced through his mind like sharp blades, leaving him dizzy.
"Ah!" Unable to contain himself, Chu Sheng let out a pained groan and collapsed to the ground. Veins bulged on his forehead as beads of sweat rolled down incessantly. He felt something within him struggling to break free; a strange energy surged through him, crashing against his limbs and bones.
As the pain gradually subsided, Chu Sheng slowly opened his eyes, and the world around him transformed completely. A multitude of semi-transparent information labels appeared in his field of vision, resembling a game interface floating before him.
"What the hell is this?" Chu Sheng was taken aback, filled with confusion. He glanced at the emerald bamboo in the yard, and lines of information immediately materialized: [Growth Age: 7 years, Resilience: Excellent, Suitable for Weapon Crafting].
At that moment, footsteps echoed from outside the yard, slow and heavy. Chu Sheng turned to look and saw his neighbor, Wang Po, leaning on a cane, limping toward him. Through his Ability perspective, several lines of information floated above Wang Po's head: [Presbyopia, Blurred Vision] [Mobility Impairment, Slow Movement] [Cane: Wooden, Right Side Cracked, Safety Hazard Present].
"Wang Po, take your time," Chu Sheng quickly stepped forward to support Wang Po, his tone filled with concern.
"Thank you, little Chu," Wang Po replied with a kind smile, the wrinkles on his face deep like ravines. "These old bones of mine aren't as spry anymore."
Chu Sheng noticed that Wang Po's cane indeed had a small crack that could break at any moment. He said with genuine concern, "Wang Po, it seems there's an issue with your cane; let me take a look."
"Ding! Kind reminder: Earned Merit Points +1." The system notification chimed again.
Just then, uncle Li walked out of the house and smiled warmly at the scene. However, through Chu Sheng's Ability perspective, alarming information floated above uncle Li: [Internal Injuries Not Healed, Meridians Damaged] [Right Arm Bruise Related to the Battle Fifteen Years Ago].
A jolt ran through Chu Sheng's heart as a wave of warmth surged within him; it turned out that uncle Li had paid a much greater price to save him than he had imagined.
"This ability..." Chu Sheng squinted thoughtfully. He finally understood that this was his former life as a top assassin's Insight Ability, allowing him to see through targets' weaknesses and hidden information.
At that moment, Wang Po suddenly said, "By the way, little Chu, I heard you're going to high school?"
