Hearing Hui Kong's words, everyone finally relaxed and began to disperse. Just as I was about to leave, Hui Kong suddenly grabbed me.
I was startled. " Master Hui Kong, what are you doing?"
Hui Kong's gaze was icy. "What do you have on you?"
"Why are you able to resist the Mermaid Curse?"
A chill ran down my spine as I shook my head. " Master Hui Kong, what are you talking about? What could I possibly have?"
Hui Kong sneered. "Do you know that after a mermaid dies, her body leaves behind a poison?"
"If a living person comes into contact with this poison, their body will start to rot."
"People in your village have fish scales appearing on their bodies to varying degrees. This is caused by the Mermaid Curse invading them after the mermaid's death."
"But you, on the other hand, are completely fine. Isn't that strange?"
I bit my lip. " Master Hui Kong, I don't understand what you're saying."
Hui Kong suddenly grabbed my arm and sniffed it. "You have the scent of death on you."
"If I'm not mistaken, you must be used as a vessel for borrowing a corpse, right?"
I pushed Hui Kong away forcefully. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"I have things to do; I need to go."
Seeing that I was being stubborn, Hui Kong didn't press further.
That night, I lay in bed, tossing and turning. Hui Kong's words and Aunt Wang's strange behavior kept flashing through my mind.
Just as I was lost in thought, the door suddenly swung open.
I was startled and quickly sat up in bed. Mother walked in, a gentle smile on her face.
"Mom, what are you doing here?" I asked, surprised.
She smiled and approached me, reaching out to stroke my head. Instinctively, I flinched away. My sister had died such a tragic death, and Mother was somehow involved. I suspected she was the one who had placed the Mermaid Curse on my sister.
Mother chuckled softly, "Xiaoxue, I have something to ask you."
"What is it?" I replied cautiously.
"Where is your sister's body?"
I froze for a moment and shook my head. "I don't know; it was already gone when I came back."
Logically, the person who should know the whereabouts of my sister's body was Mother. Why was she suddenly asking me?
As this thought crossed my mind, I looked up at Mother. The sight nearly made my soul leave my body. Her face was pale, devoid of any color, and… she had no shadow.
How could a normal person not have a shadow?
That could only mean one thing: Mother was not human.
Terrified, I screamed, "You’re not Mother! Who are you?"
My shout caught the attention of Hui Kong next door. He pushed the door open and stepped inside.
When he saw Mother, his expression changed instantly. He pulled out a talisman from his pocket and pressed it against her.
Mother let out a horrific scream as she transformed into a cloud of black smoke and vanished without a trace.
Hui Kong turned to look at me, his expression dark. "How could there be such witchcraft in your village?"
I shook my head. "I don't know."
Hui Kong took a deep breath. "Even if you don't tell me, I can find out."
I silently prayed in my heart, hoping that Hui Kong would indeed uncover the truth.
Seeing that I was being stubborn and he couldn't extract any answers from me, Hui Kong reluctantly turned to leave. Just as he was about to step out of the door, I quietly asked, "How much did uncle Zhang give you to make you so determined to get involved in this matter?"
Hui Kong paused, sighed, and replied, "It's not about the money."
"I've already intervened in this matter and have become entangled in its consequences."
"The consequences won't dissipate; even if I wanted to leave, I couldn't."
