I have a sister who is kept in a fish tank. Mother puts several live fish into the tank every day. My sister gets particularly happy and eats those fish one by one. Until one day, when Mother placed a fish the size of a person into the tank, my sister started to act strangely. Her teeth became sharper, and she needed to eat more and more fish each day. The room was often filled with soft grunting sounds. Mother thought it was a good thing and found many men for my sister, one after another. Afterward, Mother would bring her a bowl of Dark Green Soup. When my sister drank the soup, she would say to Mother, “Mom, you really care about me and treat me well.” Mother would stroke my sister's head and reply, “I’m your mother; if I don’t treat you well, who else will?” I always thought she genuinely cared for my sister until I accidentally overheard a conversation between Mother and the village chief.
“My Eldest Daughter is almost ready; when will you make your move?”
“No rush, she needs to be kept for a bit longer.”
"Well, after all, she is the monster I raised with great care, so of course I have to fatten her up a bit."
"That's only natural. Otherwise, I wouldn't have come all this way to seek your cooperation. But do you really care? Doesn't it hurt?"
My mother smiled lightly. "What’s there to care about a monster I’ve raised?"
"Besides, after all these years of raising her, it's time for her to start earning money for me."
I felt as if I had fallen into an ice cave.
It turned out that Mother’s kindness towards my sister was all an act.
My sister was merely a monster she had created, a creature meant to make money for her.
But my sister knew nothing of this.
She was still foolishly tricked by our mother into drinking bowl after bowl of Dark Green Soup.
That day, I brought fish to my sister.
But I discovered that her naked body had grown fish scales.
She tore apart the large fish, scattering pieces everywhere as she ravenously devoured it.
When she saw me, she asked, "Why hasn't today's man come yet?"
I paused for a moment and mustered the courage to say, "Sister, don’t interact with men, and stop eating raw fish. Otherwise, you’ll die."
She shouted at me in anger, "What do you know?"
She hurled a fish bone at my head.
I felt a sharp pain as my head split open, blood streaming down.
Silently, I picked up the fish bones from the ground and said softly to her, "I'll go find Mother and ask her to get you a man. I'll keep bringing you fish."
I stepped out of my sister's room.
I told Mother about my sister's outburst.
Mother looked at the wound on my forehead and gently stroked it with concern in her eyes. "It's okay; your sister is like that. She'll be fine after a while."
This was the first time she had been so gentle with me.
I was moved to tears.
She held me close, her voice gentle. "These years, Mom has neglected you, but soon it will be alright. We will be able to live a good life together."
I was taken aback. The implication of her words was that my sister would soon transform into a mermaid. Deep down, I truly hoped that day would come quickly.
In the evening, while I was gathering firewood, Aunt Wang suddenly appeared in front of me. She covered my mouth and pulled me aside. In this village, no one liked me except for Aunt Wang, who treated me kindly.
Her face was somewhat pale as she asked, "Is your sister about to complete her transformation?"
I nodded.
So, Aunt Wang knew as well.
