The words of the Mourning Matron made me realize that the environment I was in was extremely dangerous, and a moment's carelessness could cost me my life.
I had spent the entire night alone in the Buddhist Hall. Outside, it was quiet, with no sounds at all. Gradually, I began to relax, and drowsiness washed over me. Just as I was about to fall asleep, I suddenly felt someone pulling at me. I jolted awake to find Jin Can Can standing in front of me.
"What do you want?" I asked warily.
"You have to come with me," Jin Can Can said, looking at me intently.
"I'm not going anywhere," I replied, shaking off her hand.
"If you don’t leave now, you will die," Jin Can Can's tone was filled with urgency.
"I won't go," I stated firmly.
"You must go!" Jin Can Can's voice turned commanding.
"I..." I wanted to say more, but her gaze made me swallow the rest of my words. Seeing that I had fallen silent, Jin Can Can crouched down beside me.
"Do you want to hear my story?" she asked softly.
"Your story?" I was taken aback.
"Yes," she nodded.
"Go ahead," I said, curious.
"My name is Jin Can Can, and I was Lin Kai's girlfriend," she began slowly.
"And then...?" I couldn't help but interrupt.
"But six months ago, Lin Kai and some of his friends took me..." Jin Can Can's voice trembled.
"Took you?" My heart tightened.
"They bound me up, and then..." Her voice grew quieter.
"How could they do that!" I exclaimed in anger.
"They not only did that... they also peeled off my face..." Her voice was filled with hatred.
"What?" I was shocked.
"They also killed my parents," Jin Can Can said, her tone heavy with sorrow.
"Those beasts!" I trembled with rage.
"I made a deal with the Apple Snail Spirit for revenge," Jin Can Can said, her tone turning calm.
"The Apple Snail Spirit?" I was taken aback.
"That's right, I became Snail Maiden," Jin Can Can's voice took on a sinister edge.
" Snail Maiden?" I asked, confused.
"Half human, half snail, neither dead nor alive," she said, her tone filled with an eerie quality.
"So you..." I looked at her.
"Yes, I intend to kill Lin Kai. They will all meet a terrible fate," her voice dripped with hatred.
"Then why are you looking for me?" I was puzzled.
"Because you are Lin Kai's friend," she replied coldly.
"Just because I'm Lin Kai's friend, you want to kill me?" I felt anger rising within me.
"You don't understand. You're not from this village; you don't know its secrets," Jin Can Can's tone grew complex.
"What secrets?" I pressed on.
"The Snail Spirit has absorbed my resentment. It will come to collect a life, and only by sacrificing four vigorous Child Males can this calamity be averted," she stated emphatically.
"What?" I was shocked.
"You are one of them," Jin Can Can looked at me intently.
"I..." I was at a loss for words.
"Have you not noticed how your body is growing weaker? It's because of the sacrifice," she continued.
"I..." I still didn't know what to say.
"So, staying in the village will only lead to your demise," Jin Can Can asserted firmly.
"Then I..." I hesitated.
"Leave before dawn breaks. You must hurry," she urged seriously.
"I..." I was still unsure whether to believe her words.
"Wang Yuan, trust me; I won't harm you," Jin Can Can's tone softened.
"I..." My resolve wavered.
"Let's go; don't hesitate any longer," she took my hand firmly.
"Alright." I made up my mind.
As soon as I stepped out of the Buddhist Hall, I was surrounded by a crowd.
"Wang Yuan, what are you thinking?!" Mourning Matron looked at me with disappointment and frustration.
"Wang Yuan, you can't disregard everyone's lives just for yourself!" the Village Chief spoke earnestly.
"Wang Yuan, what you're doing will bring retribution!" The villagers began to accuse me one after another.
I looked at the crowd, my heart filled with anger and resentment.
"Is my life not worth anything?" I shouted loudly.
"Wang Yuan, if we sacrifice you, we can save the whole village. You would die for a worthy cause. If you dare to leave today, we will fight you!" The villagers' attitude was resolute.
I looked at them, feeling a chill run through me.
Jin Can Can was right; they didn't care about my life at all.
"Hahaha..." I laughed.
"Wang Yuan, what are you laughing at?" Mourning Matron watched me warily.
"I'm laughing at you people; it's truly pathetic," I said, my tone dripping with sarcasm.
"Wang Yuan, stop talking nonsense! You absolutely cannot leave today!" The villagers remained firm in their stance.
"Fine, since you want me dead, I'll make you pay the price!" My gaze turned sharp.
"What... what do you want to do?" Mourning Matron asked nervously.
I said nothing; I simply pulled out a knife and plunged it into my chest.
If I was to die, then let us all die together!
"Wang Yuan!" Mourning Matron gasped in shock.
"Wang Yuan, you can't do this!" The villagers panicked as well.
I looked at them, a smile creeping onto my lips.
If the village was doomed, then let it be doomed together.
"Wang Yuan, hold on!" A familiar voice echoed in my ear.
I looked up to see Jin Can Can.
"The village's barrier has been broken; hold on! I will avenge you!" Jin Can Can's body turned crimson.
Countless Apple Snails the size of people appeared, wreaking havoc among the crowd.
Wails and screams rose and fell like waves.
Gradually, all sounds faded away, and everything fell silent.
"How wonderful... everyone is here to accompany me in death... I died worth it..." I smiled contentedly.
