My master had been entrusted with a task and was supposed to be away for two days. Before leaving, he repeatedly instructed me to lock the door tightly and not to go outside, lest I be taken by someone with ill intentions. I nodded obediently.
However, four days passed, and my master still had not returned. I began to worry and decided to search for him. After locking the courtyard gate, I headed to the place where my master had gone, but instead of finding him, I encountered A Yu.
A Yu looked quite pitiful; she had endured a lot of hardships. Upon seeing me, she seemed surprised. "Wang Long, what are you doing here?" she exclaimed.
Feeling a bit awkward, I replied, "Um, I'm looking for my master."
A Yu scratched her head and smiled sheepishly. "I just think you're really brave, unlike me."
I didn’t quite understand her meaning. Just then, A Mo took out a magical artifact and recited a few incantations in an attempt to locate my master. The artifact spun around for a while before coming to a halt.
Sighing, I said to A Mo, "This doesn’t seem to be working."
I turned to leave, not wanting to waste any more time there. A Yu stood frozen in place, looking somewhat forlorn.
Days passed again without any sign of my master’s return. I ventured out once more. This time, I was caught by A Yu's Dragon Mother.
She glared at me fiercely as if she wanted to devour me. "It's your fault that A Yu is like this!" she accused.
Confused, I looked at her and asked, "What happened to A Yu?"
She raised her hand and slapped me. "Are you still pretending?"
Then, like picking up a chick, she dragged me into Long Luan's palace. She kicked open the palace door and pulled Long Luan from the couch.
"Look, isn't this girl the one who harmed A Yu?"
Long Luan stared at me, stunned for three seconds, then nodded.
A Yu's Dragon Mother threw me to the ground and kicked me in the chest. The pain shot through me, as if my bones had been shattered.
She grabbed my hair and slammed my head against the floor. "It's all your fault that A Yu is dead!"
"If it weren't for you, she wouldn't have gone to the place where the beasts roam!"
"You filthy wretch, just like your Dragon Mother!"
"Go die!"
I was battered and bruised all over. She finally released me, and I lay on the ground, gasping for breath.
She walked away.
Long Luan slowly approached me, looking down with a cold expression. "Oh! What a pitiful sight."
I stared at her in silence.
She squatted beside me and said, "It was I who told A Yu's Dragon Mother that it was you who harmed A Yu. Who told you to want to see me make a fool of myself?"
I shook my head. "I didn't think that way."
"You're lying! You're clearly jealous of me; you clearly wanted to see me humiliated."
"You are living well now; you have the life I've always dreamed of."
"I'm not living well; I'm not living well at all!"
She squatted beside me and began to cry.
I felt utterly powerless.
I slowly got up from the ground, leaning against the wall, limping my way home.
That night, A Yu's Dragon Mother died. She was bitten to death by a swarm of snakes. A Yu's dragon father accused me of causing her death. He said I was malevolent. Because A Yu's Dragon Mother had struck me, I was blamed for her demise.
"You hand over Wang Long, or before nightfall, I will destroy your house," he threatened.
My master looked at A Yu's dragon father but remained silent. He took out a wooden box from the house and handed it to A Yu's dragon father. Then he whispered a few words in his ear.
A Yu's dragon father opened the lid to take a quick glance and then swiftly closed it again. He left with his family.
I was curious about what was inside the wooden box. I wanted to know what could compel A Yu's dragon father to exchange A Yu's life for it.
