Linlin's Aunt arrived at Linlin's home just before dusk on the second afternoon. She was a plump middle-aged woman, appearing to be around forty years old, with a round face and a slightly short stature that made her look somewhat square from a distance. She wore a silky white blouse adorned with blue floral patterns and black pants. Her dark hair was shiny, and her chubby face had no wrinkles at all. When she smiled, her expression was warm and friendly.
“Linlin! Where’s your mother?” she called out as she stepped inside, one foot in the doorway and the other still outside.
Linlin had just returned from the fields and was changing into clean clothes to prepare dinner. Upon seeing her aunt, she exclaimed, “Auntie, you’re here! My mom went to the fields and hasn’t come back yet. Please have a seat in the living room while you wait!”
With a smile, Linlin led her aunt into the house, pulled out a chair for her to sit down, and then fetched a thermos to pour her a cup of water, adding a bit of sugar for sweetness.
“Auntie! Here’s some water!” Linlin said as she placed the cup on the table in front of her aunt.
“Linlin! You’re getting more beautiful!” Aunt Linlin remarked with a smile.
“Oh, not really!” Linlin blushed slightly. Then she moved a small fan closer to her aunt, providing a refreshing breeze despite its modest size.
“Dear! I have someone in mind for you! Their family is well-off—Auntie Jin! They even have a motorcycle! They just built a new two-story house! The boy is very honest, and he has six uncles. If you marry into that family, no one would dare bully you!” She took Linlin's hand excitedly.
“I’m still not in a hurry!” Linlin replied shyly.
“You really should think about finding a suitable match!” Linlin's Aunt smiled. “That boy will be here soon; you can take a look!”
“Auntie, it’s up to you!” Linlin said, her cheeks flushed.
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
“Linlin, go see who it is! It should be that boy arriving!” Aunt Linlin urged.
“I’m so embarrassed!” Lin Lin said shyly.
“You silly child! Alright, I’ll go!” Linlin's Aunt stood up to open the door.
Two people entered; one was a man around forty years old whom Lin Lin didn’t recognize. He had a part in his hair and wore a white short coat. His face was round and red, with a bit of stubble. He smiled slightly at Aunt Linlin and said, “Sister! I’ve brought this child here!” He then pulled over a boy who looked about sixteen, with a rather awkward demeanor.
The boy was about a head shorter than Lin Lin, with a flat head, a dusty gray face, and deep-set eyes. He managed to force out an awkward smile that revealed some uneven, yellowed teeth.
Despite having prepared somewhat in advance, with a shiny head and new clothes, the boy still looked quite unappealing. His silly eyes stared at Lin Lin like a fool.
He shifted his feet awkwardly, as if the ground were uneven, and one of his shoes barely touched the ground as he walked.
Lin Lin felt like her cherry lips were about to drop to her stomach.
“Sister, is this the only girl?” the middle-aged man asked, looking at Lin Lin who was lounging in the chair by the door.
“What do you think? Our Lin Lin isn’t bad, right?” Aunt Linlin replied with a smile.
“Not bad! The girl is quite pleasant to look at! Let her walk a couple of steps so I can see!” the middle-aged man said, glancing at Aunt Linlin.
“Lin Lin, show them how you walk! Don’t let them think our girl has any issues!” Aunt Linlin urged.
Lin Lin almost burst out laughing in frustration! She hadn’t intended to walk but thought for a moment and decided to strut around the yard like a model for a bit. Turning back, she said with a cold smile, “You should let him walk a few steps too so I can see!”
“Your child has twisted their ankle and hasn’t recovered yet!” The middle-aged man said dismissively.
“Fine, but I still won’t agree!” Lin Lin smirked and turned away.
“What do you mean by talking to me like that?” The middle-aged man looked displeased.
“Big brother! Don’t take it to heart! Children don’t have a say in this!” Aunt Linlin smiled apologetically.
What! Lin Lin thought angrily as she headed back inside.
“Lin Lin! What do you think of the child?” Aunt Linlin followed her into the house, laughing as she asked.
“Aunt, what do you think?” Lin Lin chuckled in response.
“The child is great! The family is quite wealthy! You won’t find a better match anywhere else!” Aunt Linlin replied.
“I’m not that lucky! Forget it, I still don’t agree!” Lin Lin said stubbornly.
“Think about it slowly! I won’t pressure you!” Aunt Linlin smiled and turned to leave. She approached the middle-aged man and said with a grin, “No worries! Whatever happens, treat it like my daughter!”
“Then I’ll rely on you, big sister! Once this is settled, I’ll definitely express my gratitude!” The middle-aged man lowered his voice.
Aunt Linlin chuckled happily.
At that moment, Linlin's parents returned and shook their heads with a sigh upon seeing the boy. Wen Xin was peering through the door next to Wen Sheng, trying to catch a glimpse inside.
"Er Ge! He's so much worse than Qing Ge!" Wen Xin exclaimed cheerfully.
"You can't compare Changqing to him; Changqing could jump into the river!" Wen Sheng laughed.
After watching for a while, Wen Sheng shook his head and smiled, pulling Wen Xin back outside. They squatted by the roadside, listening to the discussions of the people around them, finding it quite amusing.
Initially, Linlin's parents were against it. After the middle-aged man left with the boy, Aunt Linlin began to reason with Linlin's parents, stating that the bride price had been set at over 80,000 yuan. The boy's side didn't want any dowry; they just wanted a person. She explained that raising a daughter was essentially for exchanging a bride price.
It wasn't until late that Aunt Linlin finally left. Linlin sat alone on the edge of her bed, her head bowed in silence. She was eager to know what they had decided! After sending off her aunt,
Linlin's mom pushed open the door to Linlin's room. "Ni! Just agree to it!"
Linlin looked at her mother in confusion, unable to find her voice for a long time.
