Despite Jia Jun exerting all his strength, Auntie Jin shook violently a few times, puffing out a cloud of black smoke before finally sputtering to a stop. Jia Jun's face turned red, and he was sweating profusely.
"What’s going on today! This old car really doesn’t give me any respect!" Jia Jun tossed the handle aside and leaned back, gasping for breath.
"Let me take over! You’re out of energy; you can’t deny it!" Jia Ao approached with a grin.
"You can? Fine, if you manage to get it going, I’ll admit you’re better!" Jia Jun replied, somewhat unconvinced.
"Can you really challenge me? Don’t think just because you’re my brother that you’re stronger than me!" Jia Ao shook his head playfully.
"Hey! You sure know how to brag!" Jia Jun stepped aside.
"Watch me!" Jia Ao spread his legs and swung his arms, glancing at Wen Sheng with a smirk.
"I'll help relieve some pressure for you!" Wen Sheng chuckled.
"No need! I can do it myself; let’s show our brother what a real expert looks like!" Jia Ao said confidently.
"Just boasting, huh?" Jia Jun laughed as he looked at Wen Sheng. Wen Xin stood nearby, smiling faintly.
Jia Ao took a deep breath and gathered his energy. Then he made a 'K' gesture towards Wen Sheng and Jia Jun.
"Can you challenge me now?" Jia Ao said proudly as the car roared back to life.
"I'm just tired today; otherwise, I could have gotten it started!" Jia Jun ruffled his buzz cut and shook his head.
"Heh! I think you’re just not willing to admit defeat!" Jia Ao laughed. "Come on, let’s have a match! Let’s see if you’ll concede!" Jia Ao challenged Jia Jun.
“Don’t think I’m tired; I could still take you down!” Jia Jun laughed cheerfully.
“I couldn’t beat you before, but today is different. I feel particularly strong!” Jia Ao continued to wink at Wen Sheng, clearly taking advantage of the situation. Even Wen Xin couldn’t help but cover her mouth and laugh. Jia Yu took a stool for himself and sat down, watching his older brother and second brother wrestle.
Jia Ao first turned off the car, and the two brothers began their match.
It was quite common for Jia Jun and Jia Ao to compete in strength wrestling. So Aunt and Uncle didn’t mind; on the contrary, they acted as judges!
Once Jia Jun and Jia Ao stood facing each other, Uncle pulled them apart to a certain distance and then took two steps back. “Are you ready?”
“I don’t need to prepare!” Jia Jun said nonchalantly.
“I’m all set!” Jia Ao replied confidently, a smile of determination on his face.
“I’ll start counting to three!” Uncle said seriously, then shot a glance at Jia Jun.
“One…” Uncle raised his hand to start counting! Jia Jun was already gathering his energy. Jia Ao was still grinning widely, thinking that once he counted to three, he would rush over and take down Jia Jun—he felt sure of it!
“Three…” Uncle suddenly lowered his hand, signaling that it had begun.
Jia Ao didn’t react in time; Jia Jun had already lunged forward like lightning, wrapping his arms around Jia Ao’s neck and bringing him down to the ground. Since it was just friendly wrestling, Jia Jun didn’t let go of his grip around Jia Ao’s neck. He then slowly placed Jia Ao on the ground and stood triumphantly in a victorious stance!
“I’m not convinced! That was a sneak attack! Dad, that’s cheating!” Jia Ao exclaimed, his face flushed as he elongated his voice.
“It’s just testing your reflexes! Your older brother is much better at this than you!” Uncle smiled as he offered his assessment.
Jia Yu and Wen Xin were laughing so hard they nearly fell over! Wen Sheng was also chuckling.
"This time doesn't count, be serious!" Aunt chimed in, supporting Jia Ao.
"Alright! I'll give him a chance to lose convincingly!" Jia Jun said, rolling his eyes and plotting in his mind.
"I don't believe it! If you don't cheat today, you won't win against me!" Jia Ao declared, taking off his short shirt and tightening his belt.
"Just wait! I'll show you what a real expert looks like!" Jia Jun repeated with a grin, mimicking Jia Ao's words.
They got ready again! This time, Aunt would call the count! Jia Ao felt reassured because Aunt was somewhat biased in his favor. So Aunt called out seriously.
When she reached three, Jia Ao lunged forward swiftly! But Jia Jun was quicker; he suddenly stepped back a few paces, leaving Jia Ao to miss completely. Before Jia Ao could regain his balance, Jia Jun counterattacked and effortlessly brought him down to the ground.
"What’s this? This is called strategy! You could fall a hundred times and still lose! No more falling! I'm tired!" Jia Jun laughed, having regained enough face.
"You can't out-fall Jia Jun; he'll play dirty, and you won't know how to counter it!" Aunt chuckled. "Stop falling! Take Wen Xin and the others home!"
"I'll go! I'll go!" Jia Ao insisted eagerly.
"I'll go!" Jia Jun pulled at Jia Ao.
"Why?" Jia Ao protested.
"Because I'm your brother! Got it?" Jia Jun replied with a smile.
“What if it stalls halfway? What will you do then?” Jia Ao mocked Jia Jun.
“I'll hit you!” Jia Jun laughed, raising his hand as if to strike Jia Ao.
“I’m so scared!” Jia Ao shrank back a little.
Aunt and Uncle chuckled and went back inside.
Jia Jun drove Auntie Jin, with Wen Sheng sitting in the passenger seat. Aunt had placed a long bench for them. Wen Xin nestled against Wen Sheng, turning to look at the new house in front of Aunt’s home, with its tall courtyard walls and newly built gatehouse, the walls adorned with colorful tiles. There was even a plaque-like inscription that read “Happy Home”! Reflecting on the playful scuffle between Jia Ao and Jia Jun, and Jia Yu's mischievous demeanor, she felt a sense of harmony in their family. Then she thought about her own home, where Wen Hao was always causing trouble, and their father seemed to dislike her so much. Even getting a peaceful night’s sleep felt like a luxury; yet despite this, they still longed to return home.
Wen Sheng recalled the wandering woman who had no home, who had never known warmth or care for her well-being, her hunger or survival! Would she manage to live on? Perhaps God should take her away; living like that was truly painful! If I end up like that in the future, would I still want to go on living? Wen Sheng gazed at the starry sky, feeling a mix of hesitation and longing. He looked down at Wen Xin snuggled beside him; she was blinking up at him with wide eyes.
Wen Sheng smiled gently and wrapped his arm around Wen Xin's shoulders. She smiled sweetly back at her brother. What is sweetness? What is happiness? What is love? He didn’t know! It was unclear! Perhaps it lay far away, or maybe it was right there in that fleeting moment.
Auntie Jin drove quickly, the wind rushing past and blowing Wen Xin’s messy hair. The trees by the roadside flashed by like the years slipping away; even though the headlights were bright, looking ahead revealed nothing but darkness with no end in sight.
Wen Sheng felt a bit anxious. What would happen when they got home?
