Lin Lin looked around and noticed that there was no one else around. It was time for dinner. Hearing Wen Sheng praise her, she felt a bit shy and said, "Brother Wen Sheng! Why don't we head home? It's time to cook, haha!" Lin Lin appeared very happy.
"Yeah! Sounds good! I'm hungry too! I really want to eat something," Wen Sheng replied with a smile.
"What do you want to eat the most?" Lin Lin asked with a playful pout.
"Meat! Big chunks of meat!" Wen Sheng opened his mouth wide.
"Haha! Who doesn't want to eat meat?" Lin Lin laughed, bending over in delight. "You're quite straightforward! Honestly, I want to eat meat too, but who can afford to buy meat all the time during the holidays? It's so expensive!"
"If you really want to eat, just cook me instead! Hehe!" Wen Sheng joked.
"Absolutely not! Your meat wouldn't taste good," Lin Lin rolled her eyes at Wen Sheng and laughed.
"Hehe! Has Changqing come looking for you?" Wen Sheng asked with a glance at Lin Lin.
"Don't even mention it! Last time, if you hadn't arrived early, I would have been in big trouble! Is Changqing possessed or something?" Lin Lin squinted her eyes and asked.
"Probably. I could tell from his eyes that something was off. He wasn't acting normally at that time," Wen Sheng pretended to be serious.
"I’m a bit scared to see Changqing again; it’s too frightening!" Lin Lin shrank her neck in apprehension.
"Don't worry; it's fine. Just keep your distance at night," Wen Sheng comforted her.
"But still! My arm still hurts a bit from when Changqing grabbed me! How did you manage to arrive just in time? Weren't you taking Lan Lan and the others home?" Lin Lin asked playfully.
"I dropped them off at Wen Ling's house, and then Lan Lan decided to stay over. On my way back, I suddenly saw white smoke rising by the riverbank. I thought something might be wrong, so I hurried back!" Wen Sheng said mysteriously.
"Who would believe your story? But really, I'm so grateful that you showed up at that moment and saved us. Honestly, I admire you so much!" Lin Lin smiled as she praised Wen Sheng.
“Don’t idolize me! I’m just a messenger!” Wen Sheng sighed deeply.
“Hehe! Give you a little sunshine, and you think you can shine brightly!” Lin Lin mocked Wen Sheng.
Before long, they arrived home. Looking at the shabby yard, Wen Sheng smiled, though it was a bit forced.
“It’s so hot; you didn’t think to come back earlier!” his mother said with a hint of concern.
“I wanted to finish the work on that piece of land. I won’t go there this afternoon!” Wen Sheng replied cheerfully, “Mom, is dinner ready? I’m hungry!”
“It’s ready! Wen Xin, come over and serve the bowls!” his mother called out naturally.
No one responded, and a hint of sadness crossed her face.
“Let’s eat! I’m starting to miss your sister!” His mother gently stroked Wen Sheng’s hair and sighed. “She hasn’t sent any news home, not even a phone call. I asked your Aunt; she said Wen Xin is doing well! But I still can’t help but worry! It’s not too busy in the fields right now; why don’t you go find your Aunt and let her take you to see your sister? See if she needs anything. She’s never been away from us.”
“What time is it? Why aren’t we eating yet? She just left a few days ago! You’re acting like she’s gone forever!” Wen Sheng's father grumbled.
“Well, she is still a child. It’s been so long since she left home; how can a mother not miss her?” Wen Sheng's mother replied as she gathered the bowls and chopsticks.
“Miss her? Miss her? Why don’t you go find her?” Wen Sheng's father shouted angrily!
“You…” Wen Sheng's mother put down the bowls in frustration and sat on the doorstep, speechless. She didn’t know what to say. Perhaps she felt powerless, but was it wrong to miss her child? Was it wrong to care and worry about her?
“Mom! Don’t argue with him!” Wen Hao shouted from inside the house. “I didn’t force you to send Wen Xin to work! He insisted on sending her!”
“If you weren’t always causing trouble at home, would it be so hard for me?” Wen Sheng's father retorted defiantly.
“Then if you don’t buy it for me, how can I not make a fuss?” Wen Hao shouted.
“I’ll buy it, I’ll buy it for you! But do I have any money?” Wen Sheng's Father said, his face turning red with anxiety.
“But they’re giving it on credit, and you still won’t agree!” Wen Hao reasoned.
“If I take it on credit, what am I supposed to use to pay them back?” Wen Sheng's Father looked troubled.
“Then why can’t you borrow money from my Aunt? When they bought their car, didn’t they ask you to lend them some? Now that they have money, can’t you borrow a little for us to buy one too?” Wen Hao argued with his father.
“Your Aunt’s family has one; that doesn’t mean we have one! When we need it, will they let us use theirs?” Wen Sheng's Father was agitated.
“If we use their car for business, will they let me use it?” Wen Hao raised his voice.
“Farming is fine, but what business are you going to do? Do you even know how to run a business?” Wen Sheng's Father scolded Wen Hao.
“Then why don’t you start a business? Look at how well others are doing; even Auntie Jin has a motorcycle! Why don’t you take me along to do business?” Wen Hao shouted with a flushed face.
“Start a business! Do I know how? What if I lose money? Who’s going to pay the debt?” Wen Sheng's Father stood firm.
“If you don’t start a business, then you won’t lose anything!” Wen Hao chuckled slightly.
“Ah! Right!” Wen Sheng's Father nodded.
“And you won’t earn anything either!” Wen Hao continued.
“I just know how to work honestly. Who doesn’t praise me among the neighbors?” Wen Sheng's Father felt a bit proud.
Wen Sheng's mother remained silent beside him. Wen Sheng also said nothing. Wen Sheng's grandmother complained to Wen Hao, "Your father has no ability; he can't do business. You can't make things difficult for him! I've never been so harsh on him! Is it right for you to make things hard for him instead?"
"I don't want to, I don't want to!" Wen Hao chuckled foolishly when he saw his grandmother getting angry.
"You must not make things difficult for your father in the future!" Wen Sheng's grandmother exclaimed. "What kind of child grows up without understanding anything?" She tapped Wen Hao's bed with her cane as she spoke.
"If you buy me a motorcycle, I won't cause any trouble!" Wen Hao was adamant.
"Your father has no money; are you trying to take his life?" his grandmother retorted angrily.
"I don't care!" Wen Hao turned his face away and fell silent.
Wen Sheng's father squatted at the doorstep, smoking and saying nothing, a troubled expression on his face. Wen Sheng's mother stood up, equally helpless. Wen Sheng stood there in a daze, his face cold and devoid of any expression. Seeing that no one was making sense, Wen Sheng's grandmother walked out to him and said, "You should go to your Aunt's house early tomorrow morning. Let her take you to see your sister. It's been quite a while; you haven't even called. Who knows how the child is doing!"
"Okay!" Wen Sheng replied. Although Wen Sheng's father had some objections, he didn't dare insist further since his mother cared about her granddaughter.
The next morning, just as the sun was rising, Wen Sheng washed his face. When he saw the "Wan Zi Qian Hong" on the table, he couldn't help but think of Wen Xin. "Wen Xin, are you doing well? I miss you so much; I want to go see you. I'm really worried." With such thoughts in mind, Wen Sheng rode his bike to his Aunt's house.
