"Where did the money go?" Wen Sheng's father demanded, his voice rising. "Of course you spent it, but who doesn't have a few secrets? You didn't even think to tell me! You've got some nerve!"
With her husband in a rage, Wen Sheng's mother dared not speak. Wen Xin kept her head down, while Wen Hao lay there, watching everything unfold in the yard without saying a word.
"Why are you yelling at the child? Just ask him nicely!" Grandmother scolded Wen Sheng's father from the side.
"You’re confused! This child is spoiled because of you! Now he doesn’t even care about me! Do my words still count for anything?" Wen Sheng's father shouted loudly.
"Where did you spend the money? Come on, it’s not a big deal!" Grandmother urged Wen Sheng.
"I won't!" Wen Sheng replied defiantly.
"You stubborn boy! If you don’t tell me, I’ll beat you!" Wen Sheng's father yelled angrily, spitting as he spoke.
"Then go ahead and kill me!" Wen Sheng retorted coldly. He felt exhausted from living these years, thinking to himself.
A sharp slap landed on Wen Sheng's face, instantly swelling it up. He didn’t cry; he understood that making mistakes came with consequences. Perhaps spending money to buy things for Wang Lijuan wasn’t wrong from his perspective. For the girl he liked, he would spend anything just to see Yi Ren smile—even if it meant risking everything.
But from his father's viewpoint, he was wrong. Over a hundred yuan could buy many things; spending it on a necklace for a girl was simply not worth it. If questioned later, his father would surely ask: "Can she marry you?" Of course, that was uncertain. In the countryside, buying gifts for a girl without an engagement wouldn’t earn parental approval.
In the end, it meant nothing; thus, he had nothing.
"You’re willing to hit your own child! Does money even speak?" Grandmother complained as she scolded Wen Sheng's father.
"Don’t you dare question me!" Wen Sheng's father shouted back at Grandmother.
“I won’t ask! You beat him to death!” Wen Sheng's Grandmother trembled with anger.
“If it weren’t for you, the child wouldn’t be like this!” Wen Sheng's Father complained.
“It’s all my fault! You didn’t educate him properly, can you blame me? If you hadn’t always been playing mahjong, would the child have learned from you?” Wen Sheng's Grandmother was furious. “You used to play mahjong all the time, not caring about anything else, not even coming home for meals. Wen Hao had to run over to bring you food. The child learned everything from you; it’s your poor teaching! And you still blame me?”
“Why are you bringing this up? Did my mahjong playing teach him anything?” Wen Sheng's Father shouted back.
“He hits you, and you don’t even know how to run away! Are you stupid?” Wen Sheng's Grandmother pulled at Wen Sheng.
Wen Sheng couldn’t help but recall a time in the past when he had a fight with a friend. The other child's parents came to their house, and his father, wanting to show he was reasonable, scolded Wen Sheng in front of them. Following his mother’s advice, Wen Sheng ran away. In the end, his father chased him down and brought him back, punishing him again. Many people knew that Wen Sheng's Father was a reasonable man and that he was a good person!
This happened many times; whenever he ran away, his father would chase after him to punish him. After all, he had made a mistake! Running was exhausting! If he had to be beaten, so be it! As long as he didn’t die from it. After all, he wouldn’t commit suicide. Wen Sheng thought this way and remained still, not saying a word.
Seeing him unresponsive, his father picked up a wooden stick to hit him again. His grandmother couldn’t hold him back, while Wen Sheng's Mother stood aside, secretly shedding tears.
“Why don’t you come over and stop this? The child is going to be beaten to death!” Wen Sheng's Grandmother shouted at Wen Sheng's Mother.
Seeing her son being beaten, Wen Sheng's Mother could no longer hold back her tears and fell to her knees, pleading with Wen Sheng's Father to stop.
“If he doesn’t learn some reason, I’ll keep beating him until he’s dead!” Wen Sheng's Father insisted.
Wen Xin also began to cry.
“Fight back! If you fight back, he won’t hit you anymore!” Wen Hao shouted from inside the house. “Fight back! Come on!”
Wen Sheng didn’t fight back; he remained motionless. Was he waiting for something to end?
Wen Xin ran out crying.
When she arrived at Guo An's house, she saw Guo An's Father and cried, "Uncle! Please go and stop him! Dad is hitting Er Ge!"
"Why?" Guo An's Father asked anxiously.
"I don't know! Please hurry and check!" Wen Xin sobbed.
"How could this happen? How could my brother do this? With Wen Hao acting like that, who will take care of him in the future?" Lin Lin sighed from the side. "Hurry up and see what's going on!"
Guo An's Father quickly followed Wen Xin outside, with Lin Lin and Guo An trailing behind.
"What’s going on? Brother, what happened? How can you hit Wen Sheng like this?" Guo An's Father scolded.
"You don’t understand! He borrowed over a hundred yuan behind my back and didn’t even spend it wisely! How can this be acceptable?" Wen Sheng's Father gasped for breath.
"He has his reasons for spending money; the child is growing up!" Guo An's Father replied. "Forget it! What's more important, money or the child? Wen Sheng is doing fine; if you hit him again, I won’t stand for it!"
"I'm not hitting him anymore; I just want to know where the money went!" Wen Sheng's Father insisted.
"Do you think he would just throw away that money? He must have spent it on something!" Wen Sheng's Mother squatted nearby.
"Are you rebelling now?" Wen Sheng's Father glared at her.
"Wen Sheng, where did the money go? If nothing is wrong, I’ll take your side! Your dad can’t hit you!" Guo An's Father continued to persuade Wen Sheng.
"I don’t want to!" Wen Sheng said in a low voice.
"Alright! Let's just let this matter pass! If there’s a next time, then so be it," Guo An's Father turned around and said, "Brother, give me some face. Let this go, and you can't hit him again! Make sure there won't be a next time!"
"If he doesn't, how would I know if there will be a next time?" Wen Sheng's Father replied.
"Can you promise me that, Uncle? We won't have a next time!" Guo An's Father said quietly to Wen Sheng.
Wen Sheng nodded, "There won't be another time! There will never be another time."
"Good child, you've promised. I believe you!" Guo An's Father said. "Stop fighting; don't you think this is just making a joke out of us in front of others? Is our family not chaotic enough?"
Wen Sheng's Father had nothing to say.
"Come on, Wen Sheng, let's go to our house and play with your brother Guo An. We can watch some TV!" Guo An's Father pulled Wen Sheng along.
Wen Sheng didn't object and followed him out, while Wen Xin trailed behind with her head down. Wen Sheng's Grandmother angrily returned to her room, and Wen Sheng's Mother remained silent with a pale face. Wen Hao quietly complained.
