"Oh dear, Captain Su, this is truly a case of the flood washing away the Dragon King's temple," Xu Deshan remarked as he stepped into the hospital room. The difference in his demeanor from their first meeting was striking; he now appeared extremely humble and respectful, repeatedly cupping his fists in greeting. Behind him trailed a subordinate carrying several boxes of pastries and eight pieces of fresh pig trotters wrapped in oil paper.
Xu Deshan gestured slightly, and his subordinate promptly placed the gifts on the bedside table before discreetly retreating.
"This is just a small token of my sincerity, not worthy of your attention," Xu Deshan said.
Su Han couldn't help but marvel inwardly. In his original time, it was common to bring flowers or fruits when visiting a patient, or perhaps give a red envelope, but he had never seen anyone bring eight large pig trotters.
Su Han felt both amused and exasperated.
Xu Deshan sighed heavily, looking utterly helpless. "Captain Su, although my business has seen some improvement, managing so many subordinates has become quite challenging. Those unruly fellows even dared to smuggle behind my back. To make matters worse, they actually hurt you! It's simply outrageous! Rest assured, I will personally bring Zhao Fu to apologize to you."
With just a few words, Xu Deshan deftly shifted all responsibility onto others, adopting an innocent demeanor.
"Boss Xu, you're being too polite," Su Han replied calmly. "There may indeed be some misunderstandings at play."
Xu Deshan's heart skipped a beat. Upon hearing that Su Han had been injured, he instantly realized the gravity of the situation. Wounding an operative from the Royal Confidential Office was no trivial matter! If the Royal Confidential Office decided to retaliate, no one would be able to protect him.
He hurriedly called Lord Wang from the Intelligence Department, hoping for mediation, but Lord Wang avoided his calls.
After much deliberation, Xu Deshan decided to come in person. Before arriving, he had imagined various scenarios where Su Han might berate him or even refuse to see him altogether. However, now that he stood before Su Han, he found him surprisingly nonchalant.
Unable to decipher Su Han's true thoughts, Xu Deshan forced a smile and said, "Captain Su, however you wish to deal with Zhao Fu is entirely up to you. This small gesture is merely my sincere apology."
With that, he pulled out a gold bar from his pocket and placed it on Su Han's bedside. It weighed about five taels.
Xu Deshan calculated in his mind that these little operatives were usually short on cash and constantly scheming for money; surely Su Han had never seen such gold before. After all, he was only nursing a shoulder injury—who would refuse gold? As long as Su Han accepted it, this matter would be settled.
"Thank you," Su Han said.
A smile spread across Xu Deshan's face, but inwardly he scoffed at those impoverished little operatives.
Unexpectedly, Su Han leisurely replied, "Wang Wu, why don't you take this gold? You run around all day; it must be exhausting."
"Thank you, Captain Su," Wang Wu replied expressionlessly as he picked up the gold bar and walked straight to the door. He opened it and handed the gold to Xu Deshan's subordinate waiting outside. "This is from Captain Su."
Xu Deshan was left dumbfounded as the door closed behind him.
Feeling utterly embarrassed, Xu Deshan cursed inwardly; this little operative didn't even value five taels of gold. It seemed this time he would have to dig deep into his pockets.
Su Han smiled slightly. "Wang Wu."
"Yes!"
Su Han said slowly, "Wait for Zhao Fu to surrender. Cut off one of his arms and then send thirty thousand taels of silver to his family."
