At that moment, a young couple happened to pass by them. The Young Woman noticed Zhu Hui sitting on a stone bench, crying sorrowfully, while Yang Qianfan squatted in front of her like a child who had done something wrong, looking pitiful as he confessed. Seeing this, the Young Woman couldn't help but cast a smug glance at the Young Man beside her, who was meekly standing there. She snorted coldly at him and gestured toward Yang Qianfan, saying, “If you dare treat me like he treats his girlfriend, I will skin you alive, pull out your tendons, gnaw on your bones, and eat your heart.”
The Young Man was terrified by her words and shuddered in fear. He raised his hand to his chest and quickly swore, “I swear that if I ever treat you like he treats his girlfriend, let me die in your belly and never be reborn!”
“Bullshit! Dying in the belly means being a stillborn; never being reborn means being a vengeful ghost.” The Young Woman's face turned pale with anger as she trembled all over. She raised her fist and struck her boyfriend on the head before storming off. Seeing her angry and leaving him behind, the Young Man hurried after her, singing as he ran, “You ask me how deep my love for you is, how much I love you... The Moon Represents My Heart.” After he finished singing, the Young Woman's face lit up with joy. She pouted playfully and wrinkled her nose at him before proudly taking his hand and sweetly walking away.
Yang Qianfan was inspired by this scene and suggested to Zhu Hui, “How about I sing a song for you? Would that be alright?”
When Zhu Hui heard he wanted to sing, she actually stopped crying and asked, “What song do you want to sing?”
“I’ll sing your favorite song, ‘Children's League Song.’” He cleared his throat in preparation.
“Stop right there! I don’t want to hear ‘Children's League Song.’” Zhu Hui interrupted him with a hand gesture for pause.
“If you don’t want to hear ‘Children's League Song,’ then what do you want to hear?”
“I want to hear ‘Princess Consort.’” Zhu Hui deliberately challenged him.
“‘Princess Consort’? How can I sing that when I’m a man?” Yang Qianfan replied awkwardly.
“Isn't Mei Lanfang a man? He even sang ‘Guifei Drunk’! If you don’t want to sing ‘Princess Consort,’ then you can sing about Yang Guifei instead!”
“What? Yang Guifei? You want me, a man standing 1.84 meters tall, to sing about Yang Guifei in the street?” Yang Qianfan was infuriated by her persistent teasing and gritted his teeth as he questioned her, “Have you ever seen a Yang Guifei as big as me?”
Seeing him trying to evade her challenge, Zhu Hui became agitated again, her mouth opening as if she were about to unleash another torrent of tears.
Fearing that her tears would flow again after she had just calmed down, Yang Qianfan quickly said:
“Alright, alright, as long as you don’t cry, I’ll sing!” He sighed, his brows furrowing in resignation, and added, “But I absolutely refuse to sing about Yang Guifei; that would be too humiliating.”
“Deal—” Zhu Hui nodded emphatically. “Not only do you have to sing, but you also need to add some moves!”
“Hey, there are so many people here; it’s embarrassing to do any moves!”
“What are you afraid of? It’s not like it’s my face that will be embarrassed.”
Hearing this, Yang Qianfan was left speechless in anger and grumbled, “You’re quite blunt, aren’t you?”
“That’s because I’m honest enough.”
“Since that’s the case, I might as well go all out and forget about my pride.” With that, Yang Qianfan began to sing with exaggerated flair.
“To save Li Lang from his home, who would have thought I’d top the imperial examination? Topping the exam in a red robe, with a flower hat so fresh and new. I’ve attended the Qionglin banquet before; I’ve ridden through the streets on horseback. Everyone praises my looks like Pan An; who knew a gauze hat could hide such beauty? I don’t take the top spot for fame or high office; I take it for the affectionate Li Gongzi. May our love bloom like flowers under the moon; joyfully waiting to return home and see Li Gongzi, I’ll present him with a top scholar’s title.”
Seeing him sing and dance like a clumsy bear in a park, Zhu Hui couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
When Yang Qianfan saw her finally smile, he let out a sigh of relief and plopped down beside her, massaging his shoulders and patting his back. He had been thoroughly worn out by Zhu Hui’s tears, but inside he felt a weight lift off his shoulders. It was as if he had finally seen the long-awaited sunshine shining on his face again, and he couldn’t help but break into a radiant smile at her.
“Hey, does what you said earlier still count?” Zhu Hui suddenly asked with a pout.
“What did I say?”
“You promised to take me to eat Brazilian barbecue.”
“Aren’t you the one who hates barbecue the most, especially Brazilian barbecue?”
"I can't believe you're actually serious!" Zhu Hui rolled her eyes at him dismissively.
Hearing such shameless words from her, Yang Qianfan was momentarily speechless and could only swallow his frustration as he took her to eat Brazilian Barbecue.
As soon as school let out that afternoon, Zhu Hui, with the lines she had thought about all night, went to find Yang Qianfan to apologize in person. She arrived at Class 1 of the senior year and, noticing that Yang Qianfan was not in the classroom, asked a female classmate sitting inside about his whereabouts. The classmate informed her that Yang Qianfan had not come to school that day. Upon hearing this, Zhu Hui's heart tightened. She wondered if Yang Qianfan was avoiding school because he didn't want to see her. With a heavy heart, she left Class 1 and went to the cafeteria alone for lunch.
Preoccupied with her thoughts, her lunch was tasteless; she barely ate anything before discarding it all. After leaving the school cafeteria, she wandered aimlessly along the tree-lined path leading to the back playground, feeling like a lost soul whose life had ended prematurely. The dappled shadows of the trees on the ground only added to her confusion. Just as she reached the library entrance, she suddenly heard a series of high and low basketball dribbles. The sound carried a hint of sadness, adding a touch of desolation to the surrounding tranquility. Following the sound, Zhu Hui arrived at the nearby basketball court and saw Yang Qianfan practicing shooting hoops all alone.
"Hey, why are you playing basketball all by yourself?" Zhu Hui called out excitedly upon seeing him.
Yang Qianfan turned around and saw her but chose to ignore her, expressionless as he turned back to continue shooting.
"Hey! Did you not hear me talking to you?" Zhu Hui shouted again, raising her voice.
Yang Qianfan acted as if she were invisible, ignoring her calls completely, his focus solely on the basketball.
Frustrated that he treated her like a ghost, Zhu Hui ran up and stood in front of him, fuming. "Why are you ignoring me when I'm talking to you?"
"Who do you think you are? What right do I have as a rogue to speak with someone like you? Talking to you would only tarnish your noble character," Yang Qianfan replied impatiently, pushing her aside.
"Are you still mad at me?"
"How could I dare be?" Yang Qianfan said casually as he made another shot into the hoop.
"Wow! That was so accurate!" Zhu Hui exclaimed when he scored, pretending to be impressed. She jumped around happily and said, "You're so good at shooting! Can you teach me?" She eagerly moved closer, grabbing his arm and refusing to let go, insisting that he teach her how to play basketball.
"Let go of me, do you hear?"
"I won't let go unless you teach me how to play basketball."
"You are so annoying. I don't want to see you right now." Yang Qianfan, frustrated by her relentless clinginess, elbowed backward in an attempt to shake her off. To his surprise, he accidentally hit Zhu Hui squarely on the nose. Instantly, she lost her balance, tilted her head back, and stumbled several steps before crashing heavily to the ground. With a painful scream, a rush of warm blood gushed from her nostrils, staining the few ginkgo leaves on the ground with droplets of red.
Seeing Zhu Hui's nose bleeding from the impact, Yang Qianfan dropped the basketball in shock and hurried over to help her up from the ground.
"You wouldn't let me go, and now look what you've done," he said, both anxious and angry.
"You know I'm short; why would you elbow me?" Zhu Hui thought about it more and began to cry loudly.
"I didn't do it on purpose."
"You did it on purpose!" Zhu Hui cried, tilting her head back as she sobbed. "It's just because I slapped you yesterday that you're repaying me with this..."
"Repaying you?" Yang Qianfan was left speechless, utterly bewildered.
"It’s a chance for revenge!" Zhu Hui quickly corrected herself and shouted at him defiantly.
"I swear I never thought that way."
"You did think that way! You definitely did!" Zhu Hui insisted passionately, not giving him a chance to defend himself.
Seeing her get more worked up, the blood from her nose flowed even more fiercely. Yang Qianfan quickly conceded, "Fine, fine! It's all my fault; I'm sorry!"
After saying this, he immediately took her to the school infirmary. The nurse managed to stop Zhu Hui's bleeding and gave her a half-day sick leave, instructing Yang Qianfan to escort her home to rest.
Blood had stopped flowing from Zhu Hui's nostrils, but her tears wouldn't cease. She cried continuously along the way, her sobs echoing in the air, ignoring Yang Qianfan's attempts to console her. The cotton balls stuffed in her nose made her stand out enough, but combined with her deafening cries, she drew even more attention from passersby.
Unable to bear the stares and whispers from those around them, Yang Qianfan decided to drag her to a nearby park, where he found a stone bench for her to sit and rest. It was a refuge of sorts. He squatted in front of her, pleading earnestly, "My dear lady, I beg you, please stop crying. Can you do that for me?"
Zhu Hui ignored him, tilting her head back and continuing to cry as if she were a philosopher searching for truth through her tears.
"What will it take for you to stop crying?" he asked.
"Why do you always bully me?" Zhu Hui questioned him through tear-filled eyes, her chest heaving as if she were gasping for air.
"Why is it that every girl asks such questions when they cry?" Yang Qianfan covered his forehead in frustration. "Can't you come up with something a little more original?"
"Why am I always bullied by you?" Zhu Hui pressed on, growing more agitated.
"That's because..." Yang Qianfan began but suddenly realized there was something off about her question. He looked up at her blankly and asked, "Wait a minute, is there really a difference between this question and the last one?"
"There is a difference! There is definitely a difference!" Zhu Hui insisted stubbornly, crying even louder as she repeated, "Why do you always bully me? And why am I always bullied by you?"
"When have I ever bullied you?" he countered.
"You have! You have! You definitely have!" Zhu Hui refused to give him any chance to explain.
"Alright, alright! I admit it! I’ve bullied you; it’s all my fault. I apologize; is that enough?" Yang Qianfan felt helpless against her unreasonable demeanor.
"This is how you apologize? There’s no sincerity in that at all!" Zhu Hui bit her lip at his dismissive apology, tears threatening to spill over once more.
"What do you want me to do to apologize properly?" Yang Qianfan asked in exasperation.
“Don’t you have a brain? Can’t you think for yourself?”
“Or how about I take you on a roller coaster ride, would that make you happy?” Yang Qianfan suggested, trying to cheer her up.
“You know very well that I’m terrified of roller coasters, yet you still want me to go. You clearly… you clearly…” Zhu Hui choked on her words, overwhelmed by sadness, and burst into tears.
“Okay, okay, no roller coasters, no roller coasters,” Yang Qianfan said anxiously. He thought for a moment and proposed, “I know you love meat the most. How about I take you to eat Brazilian Barbecue?”
“You know I hate barbecue, especially Brazilian Barbecue! Yet you still want me to go. You clearly… you clearly…”
“Hey, stop saying ‘you know’ all the time! I don’t know anything! Why do you insist on acting like I know everything?” Yang Qianfan exclaimed in frustration, stomping his feet.
Seeing him get angry only made Zhu Hui feel more wronged. Gathering all her strength, she took a deep breath and cried even louder.
“Oh no, please stop crying! What do you want from me?” Yang Qianfan said, feeling that facing her endless tears was more painful than hitting his head against a wall.
