Dong Xiwen nodded urgently at them, pleading, "Please go save her right away, okay? She's really in danger right now."
He Feng and Zhang Ming exchanged glances, a knowing smile spreading across their faces. Turning to Yang Qianfan, they shouted with feigned enthusiasm, "You want us to save that Dwarf Winter Melon Zhu Hui? Dream on! Why not just let her get beaten up and we can collect her body afterward?" With that, they pretended to shoo Dong Xiwen and the others away.
"Don't look at me. I've turned over a new leaf and won't do that kind of thing anymore. If you want to go, go by yourselves; I'm not going," Yang Qianfan said seriously before picking up a basketball and running back to the court to continue playing.
"Hmph—if you're not going, we'll go ourselves," He Feng scoffed at Yang Qianfan, spitting on the ground behind him. He then turned back to Dong Xiwen with a grin and asked, "So who is this unfortunate soul you want us to save? Spill the name."
"It's our class monitor; her name is Zhu Hui."
"What? Zhu Hui?" He Feng and Zhang Ming exclaimed in unison, shocked.
After school that afternoon, Zhu Hui had lunch with Dong Xiwen before heading to a stationery store. Just as they stepped out of the school gate, they encountered a group of stylishly dressed boys and girls wielding clubs, looking aggressive. Zhu Hui was no stranger to such situations; if she guessed correctly, this group was sent by Liu Xi to deal with her. However, she reacted quickly, not wanting to alert them. She pretended not to see them and continued walking with Dong Xiwen, smiling until they reached the entrance of Red Square. Suddenly, she changed direction and pulled Dong Xiwen into Red Square.
Once inside Red Square, the group was furious when they realized that the two had vanished without a trace right under their noses. A scar-faced fat man among them barked orders for a thorough search of the entire square; they vowed not to rest until they found her.
Although the greenery in Red Square was dense, Zhu Hui and Dong Xiwen didn't hide in the bushes but instead took refuge in a dilapidated restroom deep within the square. Zhu Hui was clever enough not to hide in the women's restroom but dragged Dong Xiwen into the men's restroom instead. Peering through a window, she saw the group frantically searching everywhere for them. A smirk crossed her face as she scoffed, "So stupid; they think they can catch me."
"Class monitor, do you think they'll find us here?" Dong Xiwen asked anxiously.
"They will definitely come here, but with their intelligence, they'll probably only check the women's restroom for us."
"What if they come into the men's restroom?"
"Even if they do come in here, they'll just be looking for a place to relieve themselves. You don't need to worry; if they come in, we'll just close the restroom door quietly. They won't even notice."
After a while, just as Zhu Hui had predicted, the group rushed into the women's restroom to search. Through the wall, Zhu Hui and Dong Xiwen heard noises from inside before it suddenly went silent. Then they heard a woman on the phone saying someone had lost track of them and that they were preparing to retreat. Upon hearing this news, Zhu Hui sighed in relief, thinking that they had finally shaken off those troublemakers and could now see some light at the end of the tunnel.
Just as the group was about to leave the restroom, an unexpected turn of events occurred. Dong Xiwen's phone rang at the most inopportune moment. Upon hearing the ringtone, the group immediately sensed something was off and rushed back into the restroom, searching every corner of the men's room. This time, Zhu Hui and Dong Xiwen were not so fortunate; trapped inside, they had nowhere to escape. Even though they firmly held the restroom door shut, they could not withstand the fierce assault from the intruders. With a few loud crashes, the door was kicked in, revealing two pairs of frightened eyes inside.
"You’re quite clever, hiding in the men's restroom. We almost missed you," said a chubby man with a mocking tone, his eyes gleaming with triumph.
"That's because you’re all fools," Zhu Hui retorted, rolling her eyes at him dismissively.
"Even if we're fools, look at you now—you've fallen right into our hands."
"Not necessarily. We already called the police. I can guarantee that if you step outside now, you'll be waiting for them to come and catch you!"
"Oh really? We're so scared!" The chubby man pretended to tremble in fear before suddenly changing his demeanor, laughing mockingly at her. "Do you think we’re three-year-olds? Afraid of the police?"
"Three-year-olds? You really overestimate your intelligence," Zhu Hui scoffed coldly.
"What did you say?" The chubby man was furious, his face turning red with rage. "You have such an annoying mouth; no wonder someone wants to hit you."
"The idiots who want to hit me have an IQ lower than that of a three-year-old child. You don't want to join them and make yourself look foolish, do you?"
"You—" The chubby man was so enraged that he could barely keep up with his own thoughts.
"What? Do you think you're Jiangcheng Monster or something? You can't even form a coherent sentence," Zhu Hui sneered at his foolishness. "Given your current level of brain development, I’d say you're still in the nursing stage, right?"
Her retort sparked laughter from those around them. The chubby man's face flushed with embarrassment and anger as he turned to his companions and shouted furiously, "What are you laughing at? Hurry up and shut this brat's mouth!"
Seeing him lose his temper, his friends quickly wiped their smiles away and pulled out ropes to bind Zhu Hui.
"What are you doing? Don’t come any closer!" Zhu Hui exclaimed in fear as they approached with the ropes, stepping back repeatedly. "I’m telling you, I’m not someone to mess with! If my brother finds out you're bullying me, he definitely won't let you off easily."
“Oh, you have an older brother too?” The fat man laughed exaggeratedly upon hearing this, casually asking, “Who’s your brother? Let’s see if we know him.”
“It’s… it’s…”
“Who is it? Come on!”
“It’s… it’s… Yang Qianfan! My brother is him, are you scared now?” In that critical moment, Zhu Hui suddenly remembered Yang Qianfan; perhaps this was the only time she felt he could be of any use.
“Yang Qianfan? Who are you trying to fool? You think I don’t know him? He’s never mentioned you in front of me.” The fat man scoffed at her incredulously.
“I’m not lying to you; I really know him.”
“Fine, why don’t we test it then?” The fat man said dismissively, pointing at Dong Xiwen, who had been silent beside her. “I’ll let your friend go right now to notify Yang Qianfan and see if he’ll come to rescue you as you wish.”
“My friend doesn’t know Yang Qianfan; how can she notify him?”
“Not only does she not know him, but I doubt you do either!” The fat man sneered, his gaze turning cold as he maliciously said, “Let me tell you, stop pretending and trying to play tricks in front of me. Even if it were the King himself or his son here, they couldn’t save you.” With that, he tore off a piece of adhesive and slapped it over Zhu Hui's mouth to silence her.
After tying Zhu Hui's hands, the group dragged her away.
Dong Xiwen watched helplessly as Zhu Hui was taken away. She felt like an ant on a hot pan, anxious and unable to do anything. In desperation, she ran to find Meng Fei to discuss a plan of action. When Meng Fei learned that Zhu Hui had been abducted because of him, he felt as if the ground had collapsed beneath him and was consumed by guilt.
“What should we do now? I think we should call the police!” Dong Xiwen exclaimed.
“That seems to be the only option left,” Meng Fei replied as he picked up the phone to report the incident.
An entire afternoon passed without any news from the police. The two of them waited anxiously, watching time slip away beneath their eyes. At that moment, Dong Xiwen could no longer hold back her tears; thinking about Zhu Hui suffering in dire straits made her eyes overflow with sorrow.
“What should we do? What should we do? The class leader must be in great danger right now,” Dong Xiwen cried.
“There’s no clue, and the police won’t find anything that quickly,” Meng Fei sighed in frustration, feeling utterly helpless.
“Clue?” Hearing the word “clue,” Dong Xiwen suddenly remembered something and was startled. “I know of a clue!”
“What clue? Quick, tell me.”
“The class leader mentioned Yang Qianfan. Those people seem to know Yang Qianfan as well. I believe Yang Qianfan should know where they are.”
“Yang Qianfan?” Meng Fei gasped at the mention of Yang Qianfan, feeling anxious. “He’s notorious for being a troublemaker at school. He’s definitely part of that group. Do you really think he would be foolish enough to help us?”
“That may not be the case. Even though those people know Yang Qianfan, I can tell from their words that they aren’t actually familiar with him.”
“If they’re not familiar, then it might be easier,” Meng Fei thought for a moment and suggested, “Why don’t we offer him some money? He might help us rescue the class leader if there’s cash involved.”
“Will he agree?” Dong Xiwen asked, worry evident in his voice.
“We don’t have the luxury to think too much about it now. Whether he agrees or not, we should at least try asking him.”
Dong Xiwen considered this and nodded in agreement. They each went home to gather eight hundred yuan and nervously made their way to find Yang Qianfan.
When they found Yang Qianfan, he was playing basketball with He Feng and Zhang Ming on the court. Dong Xiwen and Meng Fei lingered outside, hesitating and too afraid to approach them until Zhang Ming noticed them lurking nearby and came over, puzzled.
“Hey, what are you two sneaking around for?” Zhang Ming asked bluntly.
“We… we have something we’d like to ask for your help with,” Dong Xiwen mustered his courage to say.
“Need our help? What kind of help?” Zhang Ming asked, puzzled.
“Please, we need you to save a friend of ours. She’s been taken by a group of delinquents,” Dong Xiwen said, pulling out the eight hundred yuan they had prepared in advance. “This is all we have; please accept it.”
Seeing the money, Zhang Ming's eyes lit up. He turned around cheerfully and waved to Yang Qianfan and the others, signaling them to come over quickly.
“What’s going on? Why aren’t you playing ball and chatting with strangers here?” Yang Qianfan frowned, complaining about Zhang Ming’s meddling.
“There’s business coming our way, so of course we should share in it!” Zhang Ming replied excitedly.
“What business?” He Feng interjected, confused.
“These two classmates have a friend who has been kidnapped, and they want us to help!” Zhang Ming said with a mischievous grin, subtly pointing at the red bills in Dong Xiwen's hand.
He Feng followed Zhang Ming's gesture and caught a whiff of the money in Dong Xiwen's hand. His heart raced with excitement; his eyes widened like saucers as he solemnly declared, “Helping others is the essence of happiness, especially when it comes to acts of chivalry like aiding the weak and punishing evil. We have a duty to assist them; we cannot refuse, right? Brother Yang?” He said, winking at Yang Qianfan beside him.
