Hearing her words, Song Yu was momentarily speechless, unable to respond. Zhu Hui noticed his dejected demeanor and lightly patted his shoulder with a smile. "Alright, you don't need to say anything. I understand your feelings very well. Once your cousin fully recovers, I will definitely seek justice for him. After all, that slap he gave me still hurts to this day!" With that, she let out a long sigh of relief and reflected, "Through this incident, I've truly come to understand the value of life. The preciousness of life lies in its fragility, so we should cherish our own lives even more moving forward."
Song Yu nodded repeatedly in agreement with her.
Next, she continued with her task of cleaning the restroom. As soon as she entered with the mop and bucket, she heard the laughter of several girls outside. They seemed to be discussing something with great enthusiasm.
While mopping the floor, Zhu Hui perked up her ears to listen. The girls were talking about a new student who had just joined the school. Seeing their excitement and intoxicated expressions made it clear that this new student had quite a charm. Zhu Hui couldn't help but scoff at their childishness; it was absurd how they were so captivated by a junior student.
Just as she was sneering at them, a commotion erupted outside the restroom, followed by screams, clapping sounds, and the playful laughter of girls competing for attention. The few girls inside the restroom immediately reacted and dashed out like the wind. Curious, Zhu Hui followed them to see what was happening. To her surprise, she found that the handsome boy they were all talking about—who was said to be as charming as Pan An and known as the "Invincible Heartthrob"—was none other than Liao Chengwei.
At that moment, Song Yu was surrounded by a group of girls in the restroom, struggling to break free. Just when he was feeling overwhelmed, he suddenly spotted Zhu Hui and called out to her in delight, "Sister Hui! What are you doing here?"
"That's what I should be asking you! Why are you here?" Zhu Hui looked at him in confusion.
The girls surrounding Song Yu felt a pang of jealousy as they saw him chatting with Zhu Hui. It was as if a whole barrel of vinegar had been spilled in the restroom, filling the air with an overwhelming sense of envy that made Zhu Hui's hair stand on end.
"Because starting this semester, we are officially schoolmates!" Song Yu said excitedly.
"What—? You applied to our school after graduating from middle school?" Zhu Hui stared at him wide-eyed, disbelief written all over her face.
"Yes! Surprised?"
"You’re really silly! Our school is so far from your home; why would you choose to come here?"
"Because of you!"
"Because of me?" Zhu Hui pointed at herself in shock, shivering involuntarily.
Song Yu nodded with a smile and said, "You won't ignore me from now on, will you?"
"How could I ever ignore you?" Zhu Hui forced a smile while feeling goosebumps rise on her skin. She glanced nervously at the girls nearby who were glaring at her with envy and felt like she was a sheep caught in a den of tigers.
"Can I have lunch with you today?" Song Yu asked her earnestly.
"Ah, lunch!" Zhu Hui looked at him with a troubled expression, unsure of how to respond. If she agreed to go with him, she feared that the girls who liked him would turn their attention to her, making her school life difficult. However, if she refused him, she worried about hurting his feelings. After a painful internal struggle, she ultimately decided to accept his invitation and go to lunch with him.
September.
With the start of the new semester, the entire senior class returned to their regular school schedule after nearly two months of summer classes. As it was a new academic year, the newly admitted freshmen inevitably attracted attention. They were fresh and vibrant, like the rising sun, bringing a burst of energy to the otherwise dull campus.
This week, it was Class 4 of the senior year’s turn to clean the designated area. Zhu Hui woke up early and began her duties in the restroom as soon as she arrived at school. Whenever she cleaned the restroom, her off-key singing could always be heard. Although her singing was unpleasant, she was blissfully unaware of it. She was so confident that she had considered auditioning for "Super Girl" several times, but each time she planned to sign up, an exam would come up, causing her aspirations to remain unfulfilled.
"Are you ready? Always prepared! We are the Chinese Communist Children's League; we will surely be the masters of the future! Di di da di da di di da di da..."
She began singing the familiar "Children's League Song." Whenever she sang this song, it was a sign that her mood was quite good. A gentle breeze wafted through the window as a ray of sunlight crept in playfully, dancing across her face and stimulating her senses. She stood up straight and walked to the window to gaze into the distance, taking a deep breath as if savoring the moment. She listened intently to the whispers of autumn winds; birds sang beneath the blue sky while red flags fluttered on the playground. At that moment, a boy wearing jersey number 10 scored a goal and celebrated with his teammates. Zhu Hui couldn't help but feel excited upon seeing the goal and instinctively cheered for them from inside the restroom. The boys heard her shout and waved their jerseys at her in gratitude. Everything around her felt harmonious and beautiful; it was as if a starry night would never be lonely, a world filled with laughter would never grow old, and a sunlit field would always be vibrant with life. Happiness was so simple because it lingered in the air; people inhaled it into their bodies and exhaled it through laughter—what came out was joy.
"Are you ready? Always prepared! We are the Chinese Communist Children's League; we will surely be the masters of the future! Di di da di da di di da di da..."
Zhu Hui stretched lazily and happily picked up a mop, singing as she cleaned. Just as she got into her rhythm, hurried footsteps suddenly approached from outside the restroom. Before she could process what was happening, a group of boys and girls burst through the door, rushing toward her with silly grins on their faces. This group was none other than her classmates.
"It's definitely our class leader who sings such childish songs," one girl pointed at Zhu Hui and laughed proudly at her friends.
Upon hearing this, they nodded in agreement while chuckling.
Seeing their mysterious demeanor, Zhu Hui's expression darkened as she shouted at them, "Hey! Aren't you supposed to be in morning self-study? What are you doing here?"
"We're here to lead you somewhere! Someone is eager to see you, so we brought him along," said one girl with a mischievous smile.
"Eager to see me? Who is it?" Zhu Hui frowned in confusion.
"It's him—" The girl said as she pulled out a boy wearing a hat from the back of the crowd.
The boy had been standing among the crowd, too afraid to lift his head. After being forcibly pulled out by the girl, he had no choice but to take off his hat and reveal his true self.
"Class Monitor, long time no see," the boy said.
Zhu Hui's eyes widened in surprise as she recognized the mysterious boy before her—Liao Chengwei. She couldn't help but feel a shiver run down her spine, her heart racing with a mix of fear and excitement.
"You... hello! Liao Chengwei... you... you finally got out of the hospital. Welcome back to our group," Zhu Hui stammered, unable to meet his gaze, feeling guilty as she looked down and forced a silly smile.
"Class Monitor..." Liao Chengwei hesitated, his voice trembling as he fought back tears. "Thank you, really... thank you so much."
"Wh-what are you thanking me for? There’s really no need for that," Zhu Hui said awkwardly, fidgeting with her hands and feeling flustered.
"You did something so great; as the person involved, how could I not thank you?" another girl chimed in.
"Well... it’s really nothing much, I..."
"Class Monitor, I'm sorry for what happened in the past... I..." Liao Chengwei's words trailed off as tears streamed down his face.
"Alright, let’s not talk about the past anymore. The Liao Chengwei who cries is not the one I know!" Zhu Hui bravely reached out and patted his shoulder. It felt just as daunting as patting a tiger's backside, and she couldn't help but feel a bit apprehensive inside.
"That's right; the Liao Chengwei you knew is long gone. The one standing before you now is a brand new Liao Chengwei, someone who has learned from his mistakes... Class Monitor, can you forgive me for what I did in the past?" Liao Chengwei asked earnestly, hope shining in his eyes.
"Are you really a brand new Liao Chengwei?" Zhu Hui squinted at him, filled with skepticism.
Liao Chengwei was taken aback by her question and could only nod repeatedly.
"Since you're a brand new Liao Chengwei, then I should introduce myself to you," Zhu Hui smiled slightly at him and extended her hand. "Hello! Nice to meet you. I'm that annoying Winter Melon Class Leader, Zhu Hui from Class 4 of Senior Year Three. My greatest strength is pointing out others' flaws, and my biggest weakness is... well, pointing out others' flaws! Now that you know me, you'd better be prepared to hear me nag at you anytime from now on; otherwise, your world might just plunge into darkness without even going through twilight!"
Hearing her nonsensical introduction, a fresh smile broke out on Liao Chengwei's face as if sunlight had suddenly pierced through the clouds, illuminating everything anew. He reached out and firmly grasped her hand.
“Class Monitor, our world has been without dusk for many years now.” A few male classmates beside him pouted and complained indignantly.
“Is that so?” Zhu Hui’s expression darkened upon hearing their complaints. He glared at them threateningly and said, “Didn’t you all do well in your final exams last semester? You can skip morning self-study now.”
“N-no… no… no… It’s just a special situation. We’ll go back to morning self-study right away.” The boys were frightened and repeatedly denied it, fearing that Zhu Hui would use this as an excuse to pressure them about their studies.
“In that case, what are you still doing here? Hurry back. I’m quite vain, you know. If our class doesn’t score first in the entire grade next time on the final exams, and I end up losing face in front of Jiang Xi, I will definitely blow up! At that time, you won’t just be without dusk; I’ll make sure you lose even the hope of dawn.” Zhu Hui pretended to kick at them a few times, urging them to leave.
Just as they were fooling around, Yang Qianfan suddenly barged in and splashed a large bucket of cold water over them.
“What are you doing here? Taking up space in the restroom without using it? You’re not planning a group feast to eat shit, are you?” Yang Qianfan casually walked out from the crowd and saw Liao Chengwei, whom he hadn’t seen in a long time. He couldn’t help but sneer disdainfully, “Well, well, long time no see. I thought you were dead! Now seeing you standing here full of life is really disappointing.” He sighed dramatically, adding with mock regret, “Looks like there really are blind people in the world.”
“What’s with you, Male Goat? Have you changed your feed recently? Your mouth is so foul; did you stop eating grass and start eating shit instead?” Zhu Hui stepped up to him and shot him a fierce glare.
“Hey, Dwarf Winter Melon, I don’t want to argue with you this early in the morning; it’s just bad luck.”
“If you don’t want to argue with me, then hurry up and get lost.” Zhu Hui said as he kicked Yang Qianfan without hesitation, driving him away in front of everyone. The onlookers were astonished; it seemed that only Zhu Hui dared to kick Yang Qianfan like that in the whole school.
