In the reception room, a man in his fifties, dressed in a gray brocade robe, was chatting amiably over tea with another man clad in black. Their demeanor was quite intimate.
"The one in the gray robe is Xu Deshan, and the man in black is Liu Hu, the leader of the Loyalty Hall," Zhou Meng noted, clearly familiar with them.
"Boss Xu," Su Han said respectfully, cupping his fists. "I apologize for the sudden intrusion and hope for your understanding."
Xu Deshan scrutinized him from head to toe. "You come from Xiang Xie Li? Isn't that part of the Royal Confidential Office? Wang Hong, Director Wang, and I are old friends. What about you? Which department do you serve in?"
With a smile, Su Han replied, "Director Wang was my superior; I was just transferred to the Second Division."
"The Second Division, huh? That's directly overseen by Chu Feng," Xu Deshan remarked, clearly well-informed about the Royal Confidential Office. "What position do you hold there?"
His attitude was more akin to that of an interrogator than a host.
Su Han didn’t mind and responded calmly, "I’m the captain of the Sixth Squad in the Second Division."
"So you're just a little captain," Xu Deshan scoffed dismissively, clearly not regarding Su Han as significant. "My Rui Xiang is now in decline; anyone can come in. Wang Hong needs to notify me in advance before visiting. Now tell me, Captain Su, what brings you here?"
What an arrogant old fool!
Su Han decided to cut to the chase. "Boss Xu, we are investigating a case involving a luxurious carriage that someone identified as yours. We came today to ask if you have recently lent it to anyone and, if so, to whom?"
Xu Deshan sneered. "I say, Captain Su, it's my carriage. I can lend it to whomever I please. The laws of Da Qian don’t state that lending a carriage is illegal, do they? Why should I report to you?"
Suppressing his anger, Su Han replied firmly, "Boss Xu, this is a major case we are investigating. I hope you can cooperate. Otherwise, if things go awry, it won't be good for either of us."
"Bang!"
Xu Deshan slammed his teacup down on the table with such force that tea splashed everywhere. He glared at Su Han. "A mere little captain dares to threaten me here at Rui Xiang? If you want to know who I lent my carriage to, let Chu Feng come and ask me himself. You’re not worthy!"
Su Han was genuinely angry now. This was the first time he had felt such rage since arriving in this era. "Boss Xu, while I may be just a little captain, I represent the Royal Confidential Office. I'm here on official business today; if you refuse to cooperate, it will reflect poorly on both of us."
"Bring them in!"
Suddenly, Liu Hu, who had been silent until now, slammed his hand down on the table.
In an instant, seven or eight burly men armed with daggers and axes rushed in and surrounded Su Han and Zhou Meng.
Su Han maintained his composure while Zhou Meng's face turned pale.
Liu Hu pointed at them and shouted, "Are you blind? Can't you see where this is?"
"This is the capital of Da Qian, Tiandu!" Su Han replied calmly. "Don't you know that?"
"You!"
"Enough, Liu brother." Although Xu Deshan spoke arrogantly, he didn't dare to actually confront the dark guards of the Royal Confidential Office. "Let's go, Captain Su. I don't have what you want here."
Su Han sneered, "I've made my point and done what I needed to do. What happens next is up to you, Boss Xu. We will meet again in the future."
With that, he clasped his fists in farewell and said, "Farewell!"
